  • The processes and the kinetics of the lithium intercalation into the spin coated $V_2O_5$ xerogel prepared by the sol-gel processing have been studied employing impedance analyzer. Homogeneous and quasi-isotropic thin films of the xerogel can be obtained as a result of random distribution of the $V_2O_5$ gels on the substrate by the use of the spin coating. Effective diffusion coefficient and charge transfer resistance vary more than one order of magnitude at high and low lithium composition in $V_2O_5$ xerogel, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to minimize the deterioration of dried kiwifruit quality. Osmotic dehydration was carried out as pretreatment before drying. After the kiwifruits were pretreated under optimized osmotic dehydration conditions, they were dried by three drying methods(hot air drying, vacuum drying, freeze drying). Hot air drying and vacuum drying were superior to freeze drying in the drying speed. But vacuum and freeze drying preserved more vitamin C than hot air drying. Also, osmotic dehydrated kiwifruit kept better quality than nontreated kiwifruit. Diffusion coefficient which describes moisture transfer, was high in drying process pretreated with osmosis. The changes of vitamin-C followed the second-order reaction rate equation with high RE, respectively.

  • An electrochemical study related to the electroreduction of 4-amino-6-methyl-3-thio-1,2,4-triazin-5-one(I), 6-methyl-3-thio-1,2,4-triazin-5-one(II), and 2,4-dimetoxy-6-methyl-1,3,5-triazine(III) in dimethylformamide at glassy carbon electrode has been performed. A variety of electrochemical techniques, such as differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry, and coulometry were employed to clarify the mechanism of the electrode process. The compounds I and II with thiol group exhibited similar redox behavior. Both displayed two cathodic peaks, whereas the third compound, III, without thiol group showed only one cathodic peak in the same potential range of the second peak of I and II. The results of this study suggest that in the first step the one electron reduction of thiol produced a disulfide derivative and in the second reduction step the azomethane in the triazine ring was reduced in two electron processes. A reduction mechanism for all three compounds is proposed on this basis. In addition, some numerical constants, such as diffusion constant, transfer coefficient, and rate constant of coupled chemical reaction in the first reduction peak were also reported.

  • We report Co-tetramethoxyphenylporphyrin on carbon particles (Co-TMPP/C) as a non-Pt catalyst for tri-iodide reduction in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The presence of well-dispersed carbon and cobalt source in the catalyst surface is confirmed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. In the C 1s, Co 2p, and N 1s peaks measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the C-N, Co-$N_4$, and N-C are assigned to the component at 285.7, 781.8, and 401 eV, respectively. Especially, the Co-TMPP/C shows improved current density, diffusion coefficient, and charge-transfer resistance in the ${I_3}^-/I^-$ redox reaction compared to conventional catalysts. Furthermore, in the DSSCs performance, the Co-TMPP/C shows increased short circuit current density, higher open circuit voltage, and improved cell efficieny in comparison with Pt/C.

  • A numerical study of a laminar natural convection of the CuO-water nanofluid in a square cavity using the Buongiorno's nonhomogeneous model is presented. All the governing equations including the volume fraction equation are discretized on a cell-centered, non-uniform grid employing the finite-volume method with a primitive variable formulation. Calculations are performed over a range of Rayleigh numbers and volume fractions of the nanopartile. From the computed results, it is shown that both the homogeneous and nonhomogeneous models predict the deterioration of the natural convection heat transfer well with an increase of the volume fraction of nanoparticle at the same Rayleigh number, which was observed in the previous experimental studies. It is also shown that the differences in the computed results of the average Nusselt number at the wall between the homogeneous and nonhomogeneous models are very small, and this indicates that the slip mechanism of the Brown diffusion and thermophoresis effects are negligible in the laminar natural convection of the nanofluid. The degradation of the heat transfer with an increase of the volume fraction of the nanoparticle in the natural convection of nanofluid is due to the increase of the viscosity and the decrease of the thermal expansion coefficient and the specific heat. It is clarified in the present study that the previous controversies between the numerical and experimental studies are owing to the different definitions of the Nusselt number.

  • Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of a biofilter for eliminating dimethyl sulfide(DMS). A commercial compost/pine bark nugget mixture served as the biofilter material for the experiments. The gas flow rate and DMS concentration entering the filter were varied to study their effect on the biofilter efficiency. The operating parameters, such as the residence time, inlet concentration, pH, water content, and temperature, were all monitored throughout the filter operation. The kinetic dependence of the DMS removal along the column length was also studied to obtain a quantitative description of the DMS elimination. High DMS removal efficiencies(>95%) were obtained using the compost filter material seeded with activated sludge. DMS pollutant loading rates of up to 5.2 and 5.5 g-DMS/m$^3$/hr were effectively handled by the upflow and downflow biofilter columns, respectively. The macrokinetics of the DMS removal were found to be fractional-order diffusion-limited over the 9 to 25 ppm range of inlet concentrations tested. The upflow column had an average macrokinetic coefficient(K$\_$f/) of 0.0789 $\pm$ 0.0178 ppm$\^$$\sfrac{1}{2}$//sec, while the downflow column had an average coefficient of 0.0935 $\pm$ 0.0200 ppm$\^$$\sfrac{1}{2}$//sec. Shorter residence times resulted in a lower mass transfer of the pollutant from the gas phase to the aqueous liquid phase, thereby decreasing the efficiency.

  • Thermal problems that are directly related to the lifetime of an electronic device are becoming increasingly important owing to the miniaturization of electronic devices. To solve thermal problems, it is essential to study thermal stability through thermal diffusion and insulation. A honeycomb sandwich plate has anisotropic thermal conductivity. To analyze the thermal deformation and temperature distribution of a system that employs a honeycomb sandwich plate, the thermal and elastic properties need to be determined. In this study, the thermal and elastic properties of a honeycomb sandwich plate, such as thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and shear modulus, are predicted. The properties of a honeycomb sandwich plate vary according to the hexagon size, thickness, and material properties.

  • Material properties such as coolant specific heat, film heat transfer coefficient, cladding thermal conductivity, surface diffusion coefficient of the multi-bubble are improved in MACSIS-Mod1. The axial power and flux profile module was also incorporated with irradiation history. The performance and feasibility of the updated driver fuel pin have been analyzed for nominal parameters based on the conceptual design for the KALIMER breakeven core by MACSIS-MOD1 code. The fuel slug centerline temperature takes the maximum at 700mm from the bottom of the slug in spite of the nearly symmetric axial power distribution. The cladding mid-wall and coolant temperatures take the maximum at the top of the pin. Temperature of the fuel slug surface over the entire irradiation life is much lower than the fuel-clad eutectic reaction temperature. The fission gas release of the driver fuel pin at the end of life is predicted to be $68.61\%$ and plenum pressure is too low to cause cladding yielding. The probability that the fuel pin would fail is estimated to be much less than that allowed in the design criteria. The maximum radial deformation of the fuel pin is $1.93\%$, satisfying the preliminary design criterion ($3\%$) for fuel pin deformation. Therefore the conceptual design parameters of the driver fuel pin for the KALIMER breakeven core are expected to satisfy the preliminary criteria on temperature, fluence limit, deformation limit etc.

  • The immobilization of the hydroxylamine-oxidoreductase on the water channel surface was performed to investigate the efficacy of ammonia removal in turbulent flow. The reaction by this enzyme proceeds rapidly by converting hydroxylamine into nitrous acid. For the analysis of the effect, a dimensionless mass transfer governing equation was established with the physical properties based on room temperature. The ammonia diffusion coefficient in water and the kinematic viscosity coefficient of water were 2.45×10-9 ㎡/s and 1×10-6 ㎡/s, respectively. The distribution of ammonia concentration in the water was calculated with respect to the distance from the point at which exposure to ammonia began. The quantitative distribution with respect to the mixing depth was also found. Such a quantitative analysis can provide insight into whether the enzyme immobilized on the water channel surface can be effectively used for ammonia removal.

  • In underground spaces including nuclear waste repository, prediction of air quantity, temperature/humidity and pollutant concentration is utmost important for space construction and management during the normal state as well as for determining the measures in emergency cases such as underground fires. This study aims at developing a model for underground space environment which has capabilities to take into account the effects of autocompression for the natural ventilation head calculation, to find the optimal location and size of fans and regulators, to predict the temperature and humidity by calculating the convective heat transfer coefficient and the sensible and latent heat transfer rates, and to estimate the pollutant levels throughout the network. The temperature/humidity prediction model was applied to a military storage underground space and the relative differences of dry and wet temperatures were 1.5 ~ 2.9% and 0.6 ~ 6.1%, respectively. The convection-based pollutant transport model was applied to two different vehicle tunnels. Coefficients of turbulent diffusion due to the atmospheric turbulence were found to be 9.78 and 17.35$m^2$/s, but measurements of smoke and CO concentrations in a tunnel with high traffic density and under operation of ventilation equipment showed relative differences of 5.88 and 6.62% compared with estimates from the convection-based model. These findings indicate convection is the governing mechanism for pollutant diffusion in most of the tunnel-type spaces.
