  • This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of utilizing various types of nozzles and gas-liquid mixers to increase the dissolution rate of plasma gas containing ozone generated in a dielectric barrier plasma reactor. After selecting the air atomizing nozzle with the highest gas dissolution rate among the 13 types of test equipment, we investigated the influence of the operating factors on the air atomizing nozzle to determine the optimal plasma gas dissolution method. The gas dissolution rate was measured by a simple and indirect method, specifically, the measurement of KLa instead of direct measurement of ozone concentration, which requires a longer analysis time. The results showed that the KLa value of the simple mix of air and water was $0.372min^{-1}$, Which is 1.44 times higher than that ($0.258min^{-1}$) of gas emitted from a normal diffuser. Among the nozzles of the same type, the KLa value was highest for the nozzle having the smallest orifice diameter. Among the 13 types of devices tested, the nozzle with highest KLa value was the M22M nozzle, which is a gas-liquid spray nozzle. The relationship between water circulation flow rate and KLa value in the experimental range was linear. The air supply flow rate and KLa value showed a parabolic-type correlation, while the optimum air supply flow rate for the water circulation flow rate of 1.8 L / min is 1.38 times.

  • In this paper, evaluation of noise reduction performance of HVAC system for ships by means of HVAC mock-up system is presented. Test is done for six different types of HVAC elements including room unit, silencer, etc. It is found that when diameter of silencer is small and air flow is large, flow noise degrades insertion loss. However, as diameter of silencer becomes larger, the effect of flow noise becomes smaller, and insertion loss up to 25 dB is measured. It is observed that insertion loss of diffuser type room unit is usually between zero and 10 dB, whereas that of the nozzle type room unit can be down to - 15 dB. In addition, it is shown that changing duct arrangement can reduce cabin noise by up to 2 dB, and providing same air flow to each room unit is crucial for generating less noise.

  • In the case of small-scale sewage treatment plants, it is reported that the amount of inflow fluctuates and it is difficult to operate the sewage treatment due to the inflow of unknown water due to the aging of sewage pipes. In particular, there are many overall operational problems due to the decrease in water temperature in winter. In this study, the operation status of small-scale sewage treatment facilities located in mountainous areas and water quality changes according to temperature were analyzed. It was found that the concentration of BOD, COD, and SS in effluent water was greatly changed depending on the temperature, and it was found that COD was particularly affected. Accordingly, the water level of the bioreactor was raised by 0.4m in order to temporarily apply measures to lower the water temperature in winter. As a result of comparing and analyzing the results when the bioreactor was covered and operated, a significant improvement effect occurred. In addition, a plan to improve the treatment efficiency of the bioreactor in winter is to extend the residence time of the bioreactor, a plan to expand the bioreactor specification, a new flow control tank and transport it to the outside, and an oxygen-free air diffuser to be used as an aerobic tank in case of an emergency in winter. The improvement plan was suggested. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data for the operation plan of small-scale sewage treatment facilities in winter.

  • Many chemically active species such as ${\cdot}H$, ${\cdot}OH$, $O_3$, $H_2O_2$, hydrated $e^-$, as well as ultraviolet rays, are produced by Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma in water and are widely use to remove non-biodegradable materials and deactivate microorganisms. As the plasma gas containing chemically active species that is generated from the plasma reaction has a short lifetime and low solubility in water, increasing the dissolution rate of this gas is an important challenge. To this end, the plasma gas and water within reactor were mixed using the air-automizing nozzle, and then, water-gas mixture was injected into water. The dissolving effect of plasma gas was indirectly confirmed by measuring the RNO (N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline, indicator of the formation of OH radical) solution. The plasma system consisted of an oxygen generator, a high-voltage power supply, a plasma generator and a liquid-gas mixing reactor. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of location of air-automizing nozzle, flow rate of plasma gas, water circulation rate, and high-voltage on RNO degradation. The experimental results showed that the RNO removal efficiency of the air-automizing nozzle is 29.8% higher than the conventional diffuser. The nozzle position from water surface was not considered to be a major factor in the design and operation of the plasma reactor. The plasma gas flow rate and water circulation rate with the highest RNO removal rate were 3.5 L/min and 1.5 L/min, respectively. The ratio of the plasma gas flow rate to the water circulation rate for obtaining an RNO removal rate of over 95% was 1.67 ~ 4.00.

  • The performance of small-size impellers with ruled surfaces was investigated for flank milling over a wide speed range, using computational fluid dynamics analyses and gas bench tests. An impeller with a ruled surface was designed, manufactured, and tested to evaluate the effects of blade loading, the backsweep angle, and the relative velocity distribution on the compressor performance. The simulations and tests were completed using the same compressor cover with identical inlet and outlet channels to accurately compare the performance of the abovementioned impeller with a commercial impeller containing sculptured blades. Both impellers have the same number of blades, number of splitters, and shroud meridional profiles. The backsweep angles of the blades on the ruled impeller were selected to work with the same pinched diffuser as for a sculptured impeller. The inlet-to-exit relative velocity diffusion ratio and the blade loading were provided to maximize the flow rate and to minimize the surge flow rate. The design flow rate, rpm, were selected same for both impellers. Test results showed that for the compressor stage with a ruled impeller, the efficiency was increased by 0.32% with an extended surge margin without a reduction in the pressure ratio as compared to the impeller with the sculptured design. It was concluded that an increased relative velocity diffusion coupled with a large backsweep angle was an effective way to improve the compressor stage efficiency. Additionally, an appropriate blade loading distribution was important for achieving a wide operating range and higher efficiency.

  • An optimization process was developed to improve mixed-flow pump performance. The optimization process was combined with CFX (a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code) and HEEDS (an optimization code). CFX is a widely used CFD software for turbo machinery, whereas HEEDS, which uses the SHERPA algorithm, is a newly introduced optimization code. HEEDS can use a large number of optimization variables; thus, it is possible to effectively consider interaction effects. In this paper, an impeller model, which is already optimized with design of experiments (DOE), is used as the base model. The optimization process developed in this paper shows an improved design within an acceptable timeframe.

  • The basic principle of underwater ram-jet as a unique marine propulsion concept showing vary high cruise speed range(e. g. 80-100 knots) is the thrust production by the transfer of the potential energy of compressed gas to the operating liquid through kinetic mixing process. This paper is aimed to investigate the propulsive efficiency of the nozzle flow in underwater ram-jet at the speed of 80 knots for the buried type vessel. The basic assumption of the theoretical analysis is that mixture of water and air can be treated as incompressible gas. For an optimized nozzle configuration obtained from the performance analysis, preliminary data for performance evaluation are obtained and effects of nozzle inner wall friction, ambient temperature, ambient pressure, water density, gas velocity, bubble radius, flow velocity, diffuser area ratio, mass flow ratio and water velocity gradient are investigated.

  • This study conducted a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis to find an appropriate diameter or sectional area of air ducts and fluid pipes which have an electromagnetic pulse(EMP) shied to protect indoor electronic devices in special buildings like military fortifications. The result shows that the optimized outdoor air intake size can be defined with either the ratio of the maximum air velocity in the supply duct to the air intake size, or the shape ratio of indoor supply diffuser to the outdoor air intake. In the case of water channel, the fluid velocity at EMP shield with the identical size of the pipe, decreases by 25% in average due to the resistance of the shield. The enlargement of diameter at the shield, 2 step, improves the fluid flow. It illustrated that the diameter of downstream pipe size is 1step larger than the upstream for providing the design flow rate. The shield increases friction and resistance, in the case of oil pipe, so the average flow velocity at the middle of the shield increase by 50% in average. In consideration of the fluid viscosity, the oil pipe should be enlarged 4 or 5 step from the typical design configuration. Therefore, the fluid channel size for air, water, and oil, should be reconsidered by the engineering approach when EMP shield is placed in the middle of channel.

  • In order to improved treatment performance of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma, plasm + UV process and gas-liquid mixing method has been investigated. This study investigated the degradation of N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicator of the generation of OH radical). The basic DBD plasma reactor of this study consisted of a plasma reactor (consist of quartz dielectric tube, titanium discharge (inner) and ground (outer) electrode), air and power supply system. Improvement of plasma reactor was done by the combined basic plasma reactor with the UV process, adapt of gas-liquid mixer. The effect of UV power of plasma + UV process (0~10 W), gas-liquid mixing existence and type of mixer, air flow rate (1~6 L/min), range of diffuser pore size (16~$160{\mu}m$), water circulation rate (2.8~9.4 L/min) and UV power of improved plasma + UV process (0~10 W) were evaluated. The experimental results showed that RNO degradation of optimum plasma + UV process was 7.36% higher than that of the basic plasma reactor. It was observed that the RNO decomposition of gas-liquid mixing method was higher than that of the plasma + UV process. Performance for RNO degradation with gas-liquid mixing method lie in: gas-liquid mixing type > pump type > basic reactor. RNO degradation of improved reactor which is adapted gas-liquid mixer of diffuser type showed increase of 17.42% removal efficiency. The optimum air flow rate, range of diffuser pore size and water circulation rate for the RNO degradation at improved reactor system were 4 L/min, 40~$100{\mu}m$ and 6.9 L/min, respectively. Synergistic effect of gas-liquid mixing plasma + UV process was found to be insignificant.

  • We design a four-stage propane-refrigerant centrifugal compressor for an LNG plant. Using a commercial code, we aerodynamically designed the compressor at each design point of the corresponding stages. We estimated the one-dimensional aerodynamic design output and the three-dimensional shape of the impeller flow passage via three-dimensional flow analysis. In particular, we discuss in detail the flow characteristics of the impeller and the vaneless diffuser passages of the fourth-stage compressor in terms of the velocity fields, the pressure, and the entropy distributions of the flow passages. We include the flow effects of the tip clearance flow, because at this stage the rotating speed and total inlet pressure are higher than those at the other compressor stages are. We carried out performance tests of the designed compressor stages using propane as a refrigerant in the LNG cycle. The practical evaluation could lead to design enhancements in the future.
