  • In this work, we investigate the flow velocity controllability of a diffuser-type multiple hydrofoil duct by experimental and numerical flow visualization approaches. The flow velocity controllability is analyzed by changing the angle of the hydrofoil near the outlet, which is the diffuser, while the incoming flow velocity is 0.6 m/s in the experiment. When the diffuser angle is changed from 0 to 7.5 degree, the maximum velocity inside the duct is varied from 1.35 m/s to 1.52 m/s. Also, it is shown from the numerical analysis that the maximum velocity is varied from 1.09 m/s to 1.17 m/s in the same condition. Thus, the aspect of the acceleration in the duct due to the increase of the diffuser angle is similar between the both approaches. Therefore, the multiple hydrofoil duct can be used to control the flow speed inside the duct for continuously extracting power close to a rated capacity.

  • In this paper, mixing characteristics and dilution of the merging buoyant discharges from array of multiple jets has been extensively studied in the hydraulic model experiments. New equations for dilution, which include the merging effects correctly, were derived. Experiments were constructed in a 20-m long, 4.9-m wide and 0.6-m deep flume, and the model diffuser was manufactured to indicate the typical characteristics of the existing ocean wastewater outfall in South Korea. Buoyant discharge from the diffuser was reproduced using heated water. Water temperature was measured using CC-Type thermocouple sensors, which were connected to a 40-channel data logger. Experimental results show that merging between ports in a particular riser is dependent upon the discharge densimetric Froude number, whereas merging between two ports which are facing each other at 90$\circ$ at the adjacent risers is dependent upon the discharge densimetric Froude number and distance from the port and port spacing. Centerline dilution increase with distance from the port outlet until two plumes has merged. However, after merging occurs, increase of the centerline dilution almost stops. Further distance from the position where merging occurs, centerline dilution increases again.

  • The purpose of this paper is to numerically study the characteristics of the indoor air flow of a square ceiling type diffuser according to the vane angle and flow rate. The CFX of ANSYS 13.0 was used for the CFD tool. The size of the room is $6m(X){\times}6m(Y){\times}2.7m(Z)$. The exhaust diffuser was positioned diagonally to the supply diffuser. This diffuser was designed to have many holes, so the air supply had long throw patterns with low velocity decay. The characteristics of the indoor air flow was studied at volume flow rates of 5.1 CMM and 7.4 CMM, and a vane angle from $30^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$, every $10^{\circ}$.

  • In this study, a novel bioreactor system using a diffuser type hollow fiber membranes (hollow fiber membrane diffuser, HFMD) was applied to investigate the feasibility and biodegradation capacity for the treatment of a gaseous mixture consisting of benzene, toluene and p-xylene(BTX). First, A mixed culture pre-acclimated to toluene effectively biodegraded the BTX mixture at an overall removal efficiency of approximately 70% for a 20-day operational period. It was found that the biodegradation of toluene was slightly inhibited because of the presence of benzene and p-xylene. Second, the elimination capacity (EC) of total BTX increased up to 360 $g/m^3/hr$, which was substantially higher than maximum ECs for BTEX reported in the biofiltration literature. Consequently, the hollow fiber membrane diffuser was considered as an alternative method over other conventional VOC-treating technologies such as biofilters.

  • Papers on improvement of electromagnetic field uniformity in a reverberation chamber with 1D Quadratic Residue Diffuser of Schroeder method has been published several times. In this paper, to obtain improved electromagnetic field characteristics and field uniformity in a reverberation chamber, cubical residue diffuser sets of Schroeder type are designed for a chamber in $2.3\;\cal{GHz}\~3\;\cal{GHz}$. The FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) technique is used to analyze the field characteristics in a chamber. Cubical residue algorithm and 2D arrangement show more randomness than the previous study results. The characteristics of tolerance, polarity, deviations, as well as power efficency, are improved with cubical residue diffuser sets in a chamber.

  • In this study, the flow characteristics according to the shape of the vortex nozzle was studied by numerical analysis and the amount of microbubble generation was measured experimentally. The shape of the vortex nozzle is cylindrical, diffuser, and conical type. The axial fluid velocity in the induced tube gradually increased from the inlet to the outlet. In particular, the fluid velocity in the nozzle part increased rapidly. The velocity distribution of the fluid at the inlet of the induced tube showed that the flow rotates counterclockwise in the outer region and the inner center of the induced tube. At the outlet of the induced tube, the cylindrical and conical type showed rotational flow, and the diffuser type showed irregular turbulent flow. The dimensionless pressure ratio 𝜂 of the inner region of the induced tube was lower than that of the outer region. Also, 𝜂 near the outlet of the induced tube in cylindrical and conical type showed a similar tendency to the inlet area. At the outer region of inlet of induced tube, intense vorticity was observed on the wall and in lower region. At the inner region of inlet of induced tube, intense vorticity was observed on the inner wall of the induced tube and in the central region of the inlet of the induced tube. At the outlet of induced tube, in the case of the cylindrical and conical type, intense vorticity was observed near the inner wall, the diffuser type showed irregular strong vorticity inside the tube. The total number of bubbles measured was the most in the cylindrical type, and the microbubbles less than 50mm occurred the most in the conical type.

  • Numerical analyses through Computational Fluid Dynamics have been performed to investigate the seawater flow field characteristics for various shrouds used in horizontal axis tidal current turbine systems. Seawater flow characteristics are largely influenced under constant tidal current velocity by the shroud geometry and there is considerable difference in fluid velocity distributions around the shrouds. Especially the location and magnitude of maximum seawater flow velocity directly affect turbine performance for power generation. For the cylinder-diffuser type shroud system whose cylinder and diffuser parts have the same length accelerated flow region is formed in the overall cylinder part while maximum velocity in the nozzle-diffuser type whose nozzle and diffuser parts have the same length with symmetry, locally appears near the minimum sectional area. In case of cylinder-diffuser type shroud fluid velocity increases rather high compared with current velocity. And fluid velocity at the centerline gradually increases from the entrance, and then decreases rapidly after reaching a peak close to the middle of the cylinder part unlike the nozzle-diffuser while there is not much variation near the rear of the shroud. These results of the seawater flow characteristics with various shroud geometries can be applied to optimal design for the development of efficient tidal current power generation systems.

  • In this study, we develop a highly efficient conical-air diffuser that generates fine bubble. By inserting a sufficient number of aerotropic microorganisms with dissolved oxygen from an air diffuser and minimizing the air-channel blockages within the air diffuser, we expect to improve the efficiency and durability of the decomposition process for organic waste. To upgrade the conventional air diffuser, we perform experiments and numerical analysis to develop a conical-type that generates fine bubble, and which is free from nozzle blockage. We complement the air-diffuser design by numerically analyzing the internal air-flow pattern within the diffuser. Then, by applying the diffuser to a mockup bioreactor, we experimentally and numerically study the bubble behavior observed in the diffuser and the 2-phase fluid flow in the bioreactor. The results obtained include statistics of the cord length and increased velocity, and we investigate the mechanisms of the fluid-flow characteristics including bubble clouds. Throughout the study, we systemize the design procedures for the design of efficient air diffusers, and we visualize the fluid-flow patterns caused by bubble generation within the mockup bioreactor. These results will provide a meaningful basis for further study as well as the detection of oxygen transfer and fluid-flow characteristics in real-scale bio-reactors using sets of air diffusers.

  • We analyze image visibility of a projection-type integral imaging system without diffuser, in terms of the fill factor, which is determined by the relationship between the exit pupil of the projection system and the size and the focal length of the elemental lens. High fill factor is a requirement for good visibility. Moreover, for psychological reasons, for the same fill factor, better visibility is accomplished using a relatively small elemental lens. In this paper, we study image visibility through basic experiments and results.

  • Performance characteristics of the axi-symmetric supersonic exhaust diffuser (SED) with a second throat are numerically investigated. Computational strategy repeats those for a straight exhaust diffuser with zero-secondary flows. Renolds-Average Navier-Stokes equations with a standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model incorporated with standard wall function are solved to simulate the diffusing evolutions of the nozzle plume. The methodology is validated with accuracy. To predict the improvement of starting performance by second throat diffuser, diffuser characteristic curve due to the SED equipped with the second throat is speculated with respect to that of a straight area type as a function of nozzle stagnation pressure. Principal physics caused by the of the second throst is also addressed in terms of a second throat area ratio.
