  • Holographic optical elements (HOEs) provide systems of thin-film optics that could include a variety of functions and have many advantages as optical devices in various research fields. Research and developments based on the use of HOEs in the fields of communications and displays are in progress. This paper introduces the properties of HOEs and their applications in diffractive optical elements (DOEs), holographic projection screens, and head-mounted displays (HMDs). For widespread use of HOE technology in these various applications some challenges need to be solved, as discussed in this paper.

  • The laser has been regarded as the potential illumination source for the next generation of projectors. However, currently the major issues in applying the laser as an illumination source for projectors are beam shaping and laser speckle. We present a compact solution for both issues by using a vibrating diffractive optical element (DOE). The DOE is designed and fabricated, and it successfully transforms the circular Gaussian laser beam to a low speckle contrast uniform rectangular pattern. Under a vibration frequency of 150 Hz and amplitude of $200{\mu}m$, the speckle contrast value is reduced from 67.67% to 13.78%, and the ANSI uniformity is improved from 24.36% to 85.54%. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and potential of the proposed scheme, and the proposed method is a feasible approach to the miniaturization of laser projection display illumination systems.

  • In order to operate CD and DVD compatibly in a pickup system, the objective lens comprise diffractive optical element(DOE) zone and aspheric curvature on its lens surface. The DOE objective lens is effective to simplify this dual-purpose pickup system of the 655nm and 785nm wavelength by using only one lens, but requires more precision manufacturing process and system due to the complicated shape. This paper presents the overall manufacturing process of this objective lens and describes main parameters in each process, for the correction of the aspheric surface in its core, the shrinkage compensation after injection molding, and the uniformity compensation by adjusting molding conditions.

  • 본 논문에서는 Iterative Fourier Transform Algorithm $Method(IFTA)^{(1)}$를 사용하여 Diffractive Optical Element(DOE)를 통과한 빛의 Shape이 Input Beam의 각 조건에 따라 얼마나 원하는 형태에 가까워지는지를 Input 대비 Output의 Efficiency와 Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR) Simulation 을 통해 알아보았다.

본 연구에서는 최근에 제안한 new Pnoise algorithm with hybrid input-output algorithm(NPA-HIOA)$^{(1)}$ 의 설계 성능을 IFTA, hybrid input-output 알고리즘(HIOA), new Pnoise 알고리즘(NPA)$^{(2)}$ , Nonlinear Least-Square (NLS)$^{(3)}$ 등의 기존의 알고리즘들과 비교하고자 한다. • In this paper, we propose novel optics design for media inside near-field recording (NFR) using hemispherical solid immersion lens (HMS). To obtain strong advantage of data protection and high data capacity simultaneously, HMS based near field optics using aplanatic position of super hemisphere is designed. In this design, to improve small optical tolerance of this aplanatic position, additional aspheric lens surface is added on top of the HMS and it is combined with zoom optics which composed of two single lenses having low numerical aperture (NA). Also, to compensate chromatic aberration which happens seriously in optics using blue laser diode, diffractive optical element is used. Using zoom optics, additional aspheric lens surface, and diffractive optical element together, wavefront aberration and chromatic aberration are effectively reduced in broad range of cover layer thickness and wavelength variation. In addition, In this paper, effect of gap induced aberration is investigated by analyzing different behavior of each TM and TE wave for designed media inside dual-layer NFR optics.

  • The ratio of the period of a diffractive element to the input beam size is a critical parameter in a diffractive beam shaper. We measured and calculated the Fraunhofer diffraction patterns of a periodic hologram with an input beam size similar to the period of the hologram. The measured intensities show very complicated patterns and are strongly dependent upon the center position of the laser beam relative to the hologram. Using a diffraction formula for a periodic hologram, we calculated the diffracted light intensities and fit them to the measured ones. The measured and calculated intensities are in good agreement even when the beam diameter of the incident laser is similar to the period of the hologram. We can therefore use this formula to estimate the output of a periodic beam shaper even under such an extreme condition.

  • We have developed an optical pickup head for blu-ray disc. We have adopted a liquid crystal panel to compensate thickness difference of cover layer. By disposing DVD/CD compatible objective inside the BD objective in disc radial direction, we could realize a backward compatibility. Furthermore we have inserted a polarization diffractive optical element to reduce the influence from the other layer in BD dual layer.
