  • A holographic display based on a viewing window enables the converging of a reconstruction wave into a viewing window by means of an optical system. Accordingly, a user can observe a reconstructed hologram image, even with a small diffraction angle. It is very difficult to manufacture an optical system with no aberrations; thus, it is inevitable that a certain amount of wave aberrations will exist. A viewing-window-based holographic display, therefore, always includes distortions in an image reconstructed from a hologram pattern. Compensating the distortions of a reconstructed image is a very important technical issue because it can dramatically improve the performance when reconstructing a digital three-dimensional content image from a hologram pattern. We therefore propose a method for suppressing image distortion by measuring and compensating the wave aberration calculated from a Zernike polynomial, which can represent arbitrary wave aberrations. Through our experimental configuration using only numerical calculations, our proposed method decreased the reconstructed image distortion by more than 28%.

  • In this study, two types of biodegradable resins-based clay nanocomposites, in which organic montmorillonite clay was filled, were prepared by the direct melt blending method. In order to characterize the nanocomposite structure, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and TEM observation were performed. Characterization of the nanocomposites shows that intercalated and partially exfoliated structures were generated by the melt blending method. Mechanical and rheological properties of the nanocomposites were measured respectively. For the mechanical properties, there were improvements in tensile strength and Young's modulus of the nanocomposites due to the reinforcement of nanoparticles. The rheological behaviors of the nanocomposites were significantly affected by the degree of the dispersion of the organoclay. The storage modulus of the nanocomposites was measured and the degree of the dispersion of the organoclay was evaluated from the value of the terminal slope of the storage modulus. In addition, the quantity of the shear necessary for making the nanocomposite for melt intercalation method was estimated from the relationship between the value of the terminal slope of the storage modulus and the applied shear.

  • Holographic optical elements for polarization separation (HPS) are fabricated in a dichromated gelatin(DCG) thin film of 7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness. The polarization properties of HPS is characterized by measuring diffraction efficiency with several physical parameters like exposure time, incident angle and read-out polarization angles. The experimental data are compared with theoretical results based on Kogelnik's coupled wave theory, which shows good agreement. It is also found that the HPS element has a very high extinction ratio of polarization over 500:1 for S and P polarizations, respectively, with He-Ne laser wavelength. We also propose an optical switch optical interconnects by using HPS elements.

  • An optical grism for education is fabricated and tested. It is composed of a transmission grating as dispersion element and a prism as diffraction angle compensation device. The transmission grating is Edmundoptics #49-584(spatial frequency 600 lines/mm, dimension $50mm{\times}50mm$). The prism is the fused silica type with angles ($41.3^{\circ}$, $-48.7^{\circ}$, $-90^{\circ}$). The grism device is fabricated by bonding the transmission grating and the prism with an optical adhesive. The zig for assembling the grism, telescope and camera is composed of an aluminum tube, an aluminum disk ring and a T-ring camera adaptor. The fabricated optical grism spectrograph is tested in laboratory using Halogen lamp and Neon lamp with DSLR camera. And the grism assembled with reflector telescope is tested in a field using stellar light. The results show good agreements with design parameters. The wavelength coverage range of the grism is 250 nm at the un-deviated wavelength of 506 nm. The wavelength resolution is 0.11 nm/pixel.

  • Copolyesters (PEHT) of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly (1,4-phenylene terephthalate) (PHT) were synthesized by the solution polymerization with the PHT unit contents of less than 30 mol %, and their physical properties were studied. As the content of PHT unit in PEHT was increased, glass transition temperature, crystallization rate, thermal stability increased, whereas melting temperature decreased. When the PHT unit contents were 16.5 and 24.9 mol%, nematic mesophase was observed. Wide angle X-ray diffraction pattern showed the peaks originated from both PET unit and PHT unit.

  • A series of photoreactive mesogens based on chalcone were prepared and their morphological behavior and reactivity were studied according to a variable number of alkyloxy tail carbons. The linear ester compounds 3a-h comprised two chalcone units connected to a benzene ring through ester linkages. All linear ester compounds showed enantiotropic liquid crystalline phases. The X-ray diffractograms for the mesophases of compounds 3a-h showed a set of reflections in the small-angle region which consisted of more than three sharp diffraction peaks with d spacings in the ratio of 1:1/2:1/3, confirming the well defined smectic A structures of the compounds. Compounds 3a-h were considered to be bifunctional monomers due to the presence of two photoreactive chalcone groups. Upon UV irradiation, its polymerization proceeded through the [2+2] addition reaction between chalcone units in a stepwise manner. An image pattern was obtained by the photopolymerization of the liquid crystal of the compound (3h) with decyloxy tails through a photomask. The irradiated part became dark while the masked part remained birefringent under polarized optical microscopy, which was ascribed to the production via the UV irradiation of a polymer or a dimer having cyclobutane rings by [2+2] addition, which thereby disrupted the alignment of the molecules.

  • A new magnetite-silica core/shell nanocomposite ($Fe_3O4@nSiO_2@mSiO_2$) was synthesized and functionalized with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS). The prepared nanocomposite was used for the removal of diesel oil from aqueous media. The characterization of magnetite-silica nanocomposite was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), surface area measurement, and vibrating sample magnetization (VSM). Results have shown that the desired structure was obtained and surface modification was successfully carried out. FTIR analysis has confirmed the presence of TMCS on the surface of magnetite silica nanocomposites. The low- angle XRD pattern of nanocomposites indicated the mesoscopic structure of silica shell. Furthermore, TEM results have shown the core/shell structure with porous silica shell. Adsorption kinetic studies indicated that the nanocomposite was able to remove 80% of the oil contaminant during 2 h and fit well with the pseudo-second order model. Equilibrium studies at room temperature showed that the experimental data fitted well with Freundlich isotherm. The magnetic property of nanocomposite facilitated the separation of solid phase from aqueous solution.

  • Co-Re alloy development is prompted by the search for new materials for future gas turbines which can be used at temperatures considerably higher than the present day single crystal Ni-based superalloys. The Co-Re based alloys are designed to have very high melting range. Although Co-alloys are used in gas turbine applications today, the Co-Re system was never exploited for structural applications and basic knowledge on the system is lacking. The alloy development strategy therefore is based on studying alloying additions on simple model alloy compositions of ternary and quaternary base. Various strengthening possibilities have been explored and precipitation hardening through fine dispersion of MC type carbides was found to be a promising route. In the early stages of the development we are mainly dealing with polycrystalline alloys and therefore the grain boundary embrittlement needed to be addressed and boron addition was considered for improving the ductility. In this paper recent results on the effect of boron on the strength and ductility and the stability of the fine structure of the strengthening TaC precipitates are presented. In the beginning the alloy development strategy is briefly discussed.
