  • Effects of ethanlo treatment on the structural and thermal characteristics of regenerated Antheraea pernyi silk fibroin (RSF) were investigated. Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry showed that the conformational transition of RSF might be affected by concentration of ethanol and its treatment time. The structure of RSF was rapidly changed from random coil to $\beta$-sheet conformation when RSF was treated with les than 75% ethanol concentration. However, RSF treated with ethanol(100%) did not show conformational change. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that exotherm at 232$\^{C}$ disappeared and the intensity of endotherm at 228$\^{C}$ decreased with treatment of 75% ethanol. Dynamic thermal analysis showed that loss modulus (E") and tan $\delta$$\_$E/ of RSF treated with aqueous ethanol was broaden and shifted to higher temperature in comparison with those of untreated RSF.

  • In the present research, differential quadrature (DQ) method has been utilized for investigating free vibrations of porous functionally graded (FG) micro/nano beams in thermal environments. The exact location of neutral axis in FG material has been assumed where the material properties are described via porosity-dependent power-law functions. A scale factor related to couple stresses has been employed for describing size effect. The formulation of scale-dependent beam has been presented based upon a refined beam theory needless of shear correction factors. The governing equations and the associated boundary conditions have been established via Hamilton's rule and then they are solved implementing DQ method. Several graphs are provided which emphasis on the role of porosity dispersion type, porosity volume, temperature variation, scale factor and FG material index on free vibrational behavior of small scale beams.

  • Recently, high performance microelectronic devices are designed in multi-layer structure in order to make dense wiring of metal conductors in compact size. Imprint lithography have received significant attention due to an alternative technology for photolithography on such devices. In this work, we synthesized dielectric composite materials based on epoxy resin, and investigated their thermal stabilities and dynamic mechanical properties for thermal imprint lithography. In order to enhance the mechanical properties and toughness of dielectric material, various modified polyetherimide(PEI) was applied in the resin system. Curing behaviours, thermal stabilities, and dynamic mechanical properties of the dielectric materials cured with various conditions were studied using dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), and Universal Test Method (INSTRON).

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a controlled system with electric field strength. Currently, the temperature of ER fluid increases and affects the performance of ER clutch when ER clutch is operating. This study was undertaken to estimate this performance variation due to temperature rise of ER fluid. An analytic heat transfer model of concentric cylinder type ER clutch was developed and with this model, effects of changing geometric, kinetic parameters of ER clutch and ER fluid properties were described. In conclusion, compared with neglecting thermal effects, a performance of ER clutch was very differential and for uniform performance of ER clutch, we have to improve thermal stability of ER fluid. • In this study, Mangifera Indica tree sawdust reinforced bisphenol-A aniline based benzoxazine composites were prepared by varying the sawdust from 20 wt% to 45 wt%. Thermogravimetric analysis of composites revealed excellent compatibility between polybenzoxazine and sawdust from the remarkable growth in char yield from 22% (neat resin) to 36% (for highly filled) and glass transition temperature from 151 to 165℃. Ultimate weight loss of the composites evaluated from the Derivatives of TG plots. Limiting oxygen index values of the composites reported considerable growth i.e.,from 28 to 32 along with the increase in filler content. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed that sawdust particles have an insignificant effect on curing temperature (219℃) for the raise in sawdust content. Structure of the sawdust, benzoxazine monomer, polybenzoxazine and composites were studied using Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy. Overall, polybenzoxazine composites with sawdust as filler showed improved thermal properties when compared with pure polybenzoxazine.

  • The problem of Benard double diffusive Marangoni convection is investigated in a horizontally infinite composite layer system consisting of a two component fluid layer above a porous layer saturated with the same fluid, using Darcy-Brinkman model with constant heat sources/sink in both the layers. The lower boundary of the porous region is rigid and upper boundary of the fluid region is free with Marangoni effects. The system of ordinary differential equations obtained after normal mode analysis is solved in closed form for the eigenvalue, thermal Marangoni number for two types of thermal boundary combinations, Type (I) Adiabatic-Adiabatic and Type (II) Adiabatic -Isothermal. The corresponding two thermal Marangoni numbers are obtained and the essence of the different parameters on non-Darcy-Benard double diffusive Marangoni convection are investigated in detail.

  • Torsional behavior of concrete pavement slabs due to temperature and moisture effects is constrained by self weight and friction etc, and causes stress as the result. The stress due to humidity variation in the slab is difficult to calculate while that due to temperature variation can easily be calculated by a commercial structural analysis program. Thus, the slab behavior can be predicted more accurately if the humidity effect is converted to equivalent temperature and is used as an input of structural analysis. In this study, a concrete pavement slab was constructed and strains of the slab due to environmental loadings were measured for long-term period. Thermal strains were subtracted from the measured strains by using thermal expansion coefficient of the concrete measured in a laboratory. Shrinkage strains, the remained strains, was supposed as additional thermal strains to calculate imaginary temperature with equivalent effect of the shrinkage by dividing the shrinkage with the thermal expansion coefficient. An existing shrinkage model was modified by considering the self weight and friction to be used in another model which can convert differential shrinkage between top and bottom of the slab to equivalent temperature difference. Addition research efforts on tensile stress reduction according to steady increase in the compressive strains are warranted for more accurate stress calculation.

  • PURPOSES : A finite difference model considering snow melting process on porous asphalt pavement was derived on the basis of heat transfer and mass transfer theories. The derived model can be applied to predict the region where black-ice develops, as well as to predict temperature profile of pavement systems where a de-icing system is installed. In addition, the model can be used to determined the minimum energy required to melt the ice formed on the pavement. METHODS : The snow on the porous asphalt pavement, whose porosity must be considered in thermal analysis, is divided into several layers such as dry snow layer, saturated snow layer, water+pavement surface, pavement surface, and sublayer. The mass balance and heat balance equations are derived to describe conductive, convective, radiative, and latent transfer of heat and mass in each layer. The finite differential method is used to implement the derived equations, boundary conditions, and the testing method to determine the thermal properties are suggested for each layer. RESULTS: The finite differential equations that describe the icing and deicing on pavements are derived, and we have presented them in our work. The framework to develop a temperature-forecasting model is successfully created. CONCLUSIONS : We conclude by successfully creating framework for the finite difference model based on the heat and mass transfer theories. To complete implementation, laboratory tests required to be performed.

  • Thermal energy storage (TES) systems using Microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) have been recognized as one of the most advanced energy technologies in enhancing the energy efficiency and sustainability of buildings. We examined a way to incorporate MPCMs with building materials through application for wood-based flooring. Wood-based flooring is commonly used for floor finish materials of residential buildings in Korea. However, wood-based flooring has not performed the characteristic of heat storage. This study is aimed at manufacturing high thermal efficiency wood flooring by increasing its heat storage using MPCM. As a result, this study confirmed that MPCM is dispersed well in adhesive through the scanning electron microscopy analysis. From the differential scanning calorimetry analysis, it can be confirmed that this composite has the characteristic of a thermal energy storage material. Also, we analyzed how this composition was formed by physical combination through the Fourier transform infrared analysis. Also, we confirmed the bonding strength of the material by using the universal testing machine.
