구강작열감 증후군 (Burning Mouth Syndrome)

  • Burning mouth syndrome(BMS) is a burning sensation in the oral mucosa and $doesn^{\circ}$Øt have any identifiable oral lesion and organic etiology. Diagnosis of BMS is mainly based on clinical features and serial exclusion of other possible causes. There is no specific examination for BMS and that could embarrasse the dentist. In this study, the characteristics, differential diagnosis and several treatments of BMS are presented so that dentists can better diagnose BMS to maintain a good relationship with the patients.

하지에 생긴 양성 일지성 근위축 2예 (Two Cases of Benign Monomelic Amyotrophy of the Lower Extremities)

  • Benign monomelic amyotrophy(BMA) is an uncommon cause of progressive mildly disabling atrophy and weakness of a limb. It predominantly affects the distal upper limb of young men. I present two men with BMA of the lower extremities. Although the disorder seemed clinically confined to a arm or leg, I confirmed by electromyography evidence of denervation in the other extremities. I reviewed the literatures and discuss the differential diagnosis. BMA is a diagnosis of exclusion that requires consideration in men with unilateral arm or leg atrophy and weakness.

학술 연구 논의에서 발생하는 귀화식물의 부정적 인식과 문화적 배제 (Cultural Exclusion and Negative Perception related to Naturalized Plants Derived from Academic Discussion)

  • This study suggests that some of the negative arguments related to naturalized plants raised in academic discussions are unreasonable through an analysis of trends in the academia's research on naturalized plants in South Korea. A total of 117 academic papers related to "naturalized plants" on the Korean Studies Information Service System (KISS) website were re-classified by space, the number of vascular plant species, the number of naturalized plant species, naturalization index (NI), and urbanization index (UI). Correlation between human interference and naturalized plant distribution, and between sizes of conservation areas and naturalized plant distribution were analyzed. According to the results, while there was a tendency between urban population and UI ($r^2$ = 0.70, p = .000), the number of visitors in national parks had no relation to either the NI or the UI (r = 0.028 and r = 0.013, respectively). Likewise, there was no correlation between national parks or conservation areas and naturalized plant distribution (r = 0.014, r = 0.17, respectively). The average NI and the UI of forest areas were approximately twice as low as those of national parks. In estimated regression equation, when one hypothesizes that the entire 4,952 taxa of plants growing in South Korea, the number of naturalized plants, combining paleo-naturalized plants and neo-naturalized plants, amounted to 2,398 taxa, 48.43%. In the academia, Korean Endemic Plants are less than one quarter of 4,952 taxa. Such results signify that, contrary to discussions in the academia, it is meaningless to distinguish between naturalized plants and native plants. In certain aspects, academic discussions on naturalized plants in Korea have proceeded in a manner similar to cultural exclusion by mono-culturalism in a multi-cultural environment.

사회적 배제 집단으로서의 저소득 모자가족과 통합적 복지대책 수립을 위한 연구 (A Study of Developing Comprehensive Policies for Low-Income Single-parent Households - Using a Concept of Social Exclusion)

  • 본 연구는 저소득 모자가구주의 대부분이 일을 하고 있음에도 불구하고 경제적으로 여전히 어려운 노동빈민(working poor)으로서의 위치에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다는 문제의식 속에서 비롯되었으며, 저소득모자가구의 생활실태를 최근 사회과학 내에서 논의되고 있는 사회적 배제 개념을 이용하여 분석하고 이의 극복방안으로서 사회적 통합과 연대모색을 제안하였다. 구체적으로 본 연구는 남성가장을 중심으로 한 일반가구, 일반 모자가구, 사회적 빈곤선 이하에 놓인 저소득모자가구를 대상으로 각 가구유형별 특성과 생활실태를 비교분석하고 이를 통해 전반적인 모자가구의 사회적 배제과정을 살펴보았다. 본 연구는 2000년 지역사회복지협의회의 "사회복지욕구조사" 원자료를 이차분석(secondary analysis) 하였으며 총 3,182가구가 최종적으로 분석에 포함되었다. 연구결과에 의하면 전반적으로 모자가구는 일반모자가구, 저소득모자가구에 상관없이 고용형태, 주거형태, 소득, 소비생활 측면에서 일반(남성가장)가구에 비해 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 일반가구에 비해 모자가구는 가족으로부터 자원을 제공받기보다는 오히려 장애, 만성질환 등의 가족원을 보호해야 하는 상당한 부담을 안고 있었으며, 사회적 안전망에서도 모자가구는 전반적으로 제외되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이것은 모자가구가 일반가구에 비하여 전반적으로 사회적으로 취약해지거나 고립될 가능성이 매우 높은 현실을 반영하며, 현재 공식적으로 빈곤층, 혹은 저소득층으로 분류되지는 않았지만 일반모자가구도 포괄적인 사회적 안전 망이 확립되지 않는다면 향후 저소득층으로 배제될 가능성이 매우 높다는 사실을 확인시켰다. 마지막으로 연구결과에 기초하여, 전체 모자가족의 사회적 배제를 극복할 수 있는 사회적 통합방안이 모색되었다.

Lactobacillus sporogenes에서$\beta$-galactosidase 생합성 조절 (Regulation of $\beta$-galactosidase Biosynt hesis in Lactobacillus sporogenes)

  • Lactobacillus sporogenes에서 Beta-glactosidase의 생합성은 isopropyl-Beta-galactopyransoide(IPTG)나 galactose에 의해 효과적으로 유도되었으며 배양초기에는 lactose에 의해서도 훨씬 낮은 정도로 유도되었다. Glucose는 inducer exclusion이나 transient repression이 아니 catabolite repression에 의해 Beta-galactosidase의 합성을 억제시킴을 알 수 있었다. 또한, glucose에 의한 Beta-galactosidase의 catabolite repression은 cAMP나 cGMP에 의해 전혀 완하되지 않았다.

Importance of Accurate Diagnosis in Pyoderma Gangrenosum

  • Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare inflammatory reactive dermatosis marked by painful cutaneous ulcers. Diagnosis of pyoderma gangrenosum is usually made based on past medical history and after the exclusion of other possible diseases based on the clinical manifestations of the lesion. Diseases that show rapid progression to necrosis and that should not be misdiagnosed as pyoderma gangrenosum include malignant neoplasms and necrotizing fasciitis. Immunosuppressive agents such as steroids and cyclosporine are considered first-line therapy. Surgical removal of the necrotic tissues is contraindicated, as it may further induce immune reaction and promote ulcer to enlarge. Here, we present a case to encourage plastic surgeons to consider pyodermagangrenosum in the differential diagnosis of idiopathic ulcers. Satisfactory outcomes for patients with pyodermagangrenosum may be expected when using steroids and immunosuppressive agents during the early stage of the disease.

일부 산모의 산과적 지표와 과립구/림프구 비와의 관계 (A Study on the Relationship between the Obstetric Variables and Granulocyte/Lymphocyte Ratio in Some Postpartum Women)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between peripheral blood leukocyte differential - Granulocyte rate, Lymphocyte rate and its calculated Granulocyte/Lymphocyte ratio - and the obstetric variables. Methods: From 270 cases of women who were in the postpartum care center attached to Won-Kwang Korean Medical Hospital, 36 cases met exclusion criteria. On the obstetric variables of 234 cases, peripheral blood leukocyte differential - Granulocyte rate, Lymphocyte rate and its calculated Granulocyte/Lymphocyte ratio - was analyzed. In the postpartum care center, the obstetric variables were asked of 234 cases of women, and who measured leukocyte differential. Results: Mean granulocyte rate and lymphocyte rate of peripheral blood leukocyte differential showed statistically significant difference from those in healthy people and was high. There was statistically significant difference in granulocyte/lymphocyte ratio according to mood of delivery, parity and period passed from childbirth. But whether postpartum women with anemia or not, maternal age and gender of neonate were not associated with granulocyte/lymphocyte ratio, and which was not significantly correlated with gestational age and neonatal birth weight. Conclusions: These findings suggest that activation of the sympathetic nervous system in postpartum women is higher than in healthy people. And granulocyte/lymphocyte ratio was influenced by mood of delivery, parity and period passed from childbirth. In future, more studies or surveys, with less bias, for the relation between peripheral blood leukocyte differential and the obstetric variables are required.

Effects of Various Addition and Exclusion Time of Glucose on Development of Mouse Two-Cell Embryos

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of various addition and exclusion time of glucose (Control: no addition, A: 24~72 h, B: 24~48 h, C: 48~72 h, D: 0~72 h, E: 0~48 h, F: 0~24 h and 48~72 h, G: 0~24 h) on embryonic developmental capacity of 2-cell embryos in mice. Developed blastocysts were assessed for mean cell number by differential staining. The zona-intact blastocyst (ZiB) rates were higher (p<0.05) in group B than control. However, the zona-escape blastocyst (ZeB) rates were not significantly different in all groups. At 72 h, total blastocyst (ZiB + ZeB) formation rates were not significantly different in all groups. The mean cell number was not significantly different among all groups. The inner cell mass (ICM) cell number was higher (p<0.05) in group F than control, group A, B and G. The trophectoderm (TE) cell number was higher (p<0.05) in control than group A and D. The %ICM was higher (p<0.05) in group C, D and F than control. The ICM : TE ratio was not significantly different in all groups. Between control and glucose group, no significant difference was observed in the total blastocysts (ZiB + ZeB) formation rates. Also, no significant difference was observed in the mean cell number, ICM cell number and ICM : TE ratio. However the TE cell number was higher (p<0.05) in control than glucose group and %ICM was higher (p<0.05) in glucose group than control. In conclusion, glucose added in culture medium was not inhibitory on blastocyst formation but glucose added for 48 ~72 h in culture medium increases %ICM of blastocysts in mice.

다문화 정책정향성과 다문화 수용성간의 영향 연구 (A Study on the Multicultural Policy Orientation and Multicultural Acceptance of Multicultural People)

  • 오늘날 전 세계는 급속하게 진행되는 글로벌화(globalization), 지역화(localism)의 영향으로 인해 다문화사회가 일반화되었고 한국도 국제화 세계화로 말미암아 국가적 인적교류와 저출산 고령화로 인한 외국 인력의 수요증대로 140여만 명의 다문화시대에 도래해 있다. 본 연구는 다문화인을 대상으로 한국의 다문화정책 정향성과 다문화 수용성 간의 관련성에 대해 분석하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 다문화인들이 한국생활 부적응 변수요인을 발견함으로써 일반인과의 사회통합에 도움이 될 현실적인 정책적 제안을 하고자 함에 목적을 두고자 한다. 국내에 이주해 있는 250명의 다문화인들을 대상으로 실증분석을 수행함과 동시에 다문화인들을 남녀로 구분하여 분석을 실시함으로써 다문화수용성에 남녀의 문화적 차이가 있는지에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 연구결과 첫째, 다문화인의 동화의 다문화정책 정향성은 관계능력, 개방성, 공감과 같은 다문화 수용성에 유의한 정의 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 다문화인의 다문화주의의 다문화정책 정향성은 개방성, 공감과 같은 다문화 수용성에 유의한 정의 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 다문화인의 차별적 배제의 다문화정책 정향성은 개방성과 같은 다문화 수용성에 유의한 정의 영향을 미쳤다.

Molecular Cloning and Enzymatic Characterization of Cyclomaltodextrinase from Hyperthermophilic Archaeon Thermococcus sp. CL1

  • Genome organization near cyclomaltodextrinases (CDases) was analyzed and compared for four different hyperthermophilic archaea: Thermococcus, Pyrococcus, Staphylothermus, and Thermofilum. A gene (CL1_0884) encoding a putative CDase from Thermococcus sp. CL1 (tccd) was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. TcCD was confirmed to be highly thermostable, with optimal activity at $85^{\circ}C$. The melting temperature of TcCD was determined to be $93^{\circ}C$ by both differential scanning calorimetry and differential scanning fluorimetry. A size-exclusion chromatography experiment showed that TcCD exists as a monomer. TcCD preferentially hydrolyzed ${\alpha}$-cyclodextrin (${\alpha}$-CD), and at the initial stage catalyzed a ring-opening reaction by cleaving one ${\alpha}$-1,4-glycosidic linkage of the CD ring to produce the corresponding single maltooligosaccharide. Furthermore, TcCD could hydrolyze branched CDs (G1-${\alpha}$-CD, G1-${\beta}$-CD, and G2-${\beta}$-CD) to yield significant amounts (45%, 40%, and 46%) of isomaltooligosaccharides (panose and $6^2$-${\alpha}$-maltosylmaltose) in addition to glucose and maltose. This enzyme is one of the most thermostable maltogenic amylases reported, and might be of potential value in the production of isomaltooligosaccharides in the food industry.
