  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate the destructive effects of biofilm formation and/or biocorrosive activity of 6 different oral microorganisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three different heat polymerized acrylic resins (Ivocap Plus, Lucitone 550, QC 20) were used to prepare three different types of samples. Type "A" samples with "V" type notch was used to measure the fracture strength, "B" type to evaluate the surfaces with scanning electron microscopy and "C" type for quantitative biofilm assay. Development and calculation of biofilm covered surfaces on denture base materials were accomplished by SEM and quantitative biofilm assay. According to normality assumptions ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis was selected for statistical analysis (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. Significant differences were obtained among the adhesion potential of 6 different microorganisms and there were significant differences among their adhesion onto 3 different denture base materials. Compared to the control groups after contamination with the microorganisms, the three point bending test values of denture base materials decreased significantly (P<.05); microorganisms diffused at least 52% of the denture base surface. The highest median quantitative biofilm value within all the denture base materials was obtained with P. aeruginosa on Lucitone 550. The type of denture base material did not alter the diffusion potential of the microorganisms significantly (P>.05). CONCLUSION. All the tested microorganisms had destructive effect over the structure and composition of the denture base materials.

  • In additive manufacturing, the flowability of feedstock particles determines the quality of the parts that are affected by different parameters, including the chemistry and morphology of the powders and particle size distribution. In this study, the microstructures and flowabilities of gas-atomized heat-resistant alloys for additive manufacturing applications are investigated. A KHR45A alloy powder with a composition of Fe-30Cr-40Mn-1.8Nb (wt.%) is fabricated using gas atomization process. The microstructure and effect of powder chemistry and morphology on the flow behavior are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and revolution powder analysis. The results reveal the formation of spherical particles composed of single-phase FCC dendritic structures after gas atomization. SEM observations show variations in the microstructures of the powder particles with different size distributions. Elemental distribution maps, line scans, and high-resolution XPS results indicate the presence of a Si-rich oxide accompanied by Fe, Cr, and Nb metal oxides in the outer layer of the powders. The flowability behavior is found to be induced by the particle size distribution, which can be attributed to the interparticle interactions and friction of particles with different sizes.

  • The design of the material synthesis process is important because this process can be applied to a variety of materials and used in different applications. Herein, we selectively oxidized two types of metals in a carbon nanofiber (CNF) support and then left only one type of metal on a porous support using selective etching. Ni and MgO were formed in the CNFs through annealing, and then MgO was etched with an HCl etchant. In the selective oxidation process, two types of metal were selected by considering the oxidation tendency between the metal and C. Ni was selected as an oxidant of C, and Mg was selected as a reductant of C. The two metals with significantly different oxidation tendencies were predicted to have different reactivity with the etchant, making them suitable for selective etching. The effectiveness of selective etching was verified by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In EDS, the atomic concentration of Mg was selectively reduced. In TEM, the formation of a porous structure was confirmed.

  • Friction characteristics of automotive friction materials according to the types of phenolic resin were investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Four different simplified friction materials bound with Bakelite$^{TM}$ and Xylok$^{TM}$ phenolic resin were studied in this work. Two different modes of drag test(constant initial temperature test and constant interval test) were employed to analyze the effects of the binders on friction characteristics. Friction materials containing modified Xylok$^{TM}$ resin showed good heat resistance and friction stability. The results also showed that aramid fiber played important roles in improving friction stability and weard wear

  • A human being has been using more and more materials for promotion of its life level year by year. The materials are originated from the Nature. We must think that a human being temporarily borrows them from the Nature. So we should return them in the same form as the origin into the Nature. However, it is impossible because it has been irreversibly changed into different phase. This attributes destruction of the Nature, i.e., pollution of the Nature. For environmental prevention of the Nature from pollution, we should try the entire recycling of materials by returning the used materials in the safe from even if it has a different phase in comparison with the original state. This article proposes the entire recycling of materials lot keeping the EARTH.

  • The mechanical properties of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs)-reinforced epoxy matrix composites with different weight percentages of MWNTs have been investigated. Also, the morphologies and failure behaviors of the composites after mechanical tests are studied by SEM and TEM analyses. As a result, the addition of MWNTs into the epoxy matrix has a remarkable effect on the mechanical properties. And the fracture surfaces of MWNTs/epoxy composites after flexural strength tests show different failure mechanisms for the composites under different nanotube contents. Also, a chemical functionalization of MWNTs can be a useful tool to improve the dispersion of the nanotubes in an epoxy system, resulting in increasing the mechanical properties of the composite materials studied.

  • With continuous development in the field of sample preparation technology, solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) has been widely used in analytical chemistry for high extraction efficiency and convenient operation. Different materials lead to different extraction results. Among existing materials, carbon-based materials are still attracting attention from scientists due to their excellent physical and chemical properties as well as their modifiable surfaces, which could enhance the adsorption effects of SPME fiber. This review introduces the preparation methods and applications of different kinds of carbon-based material coatings on fibers. In addition, directions for future research on carbon material composites are discussed.

  • To develop optimal storage method of root of Anemarrhena Rhizome, which has been grown as major cultural herbal medicine material, root of Anemarrhena Rhizome was stored for 10 months with different packing materials and sealing methods. The loss in dry weight as influenced by packing materials and sealing methods was the lowest at vacuum packing and followed by complete sealing methods with transparent polyethylene film. The rot ratio of root during the storage period was not significantly different among packing materials but was significantly different among sealing conditions. Conclusively vacuum packing and complete sealing with polyethylene film appears to be optimal for storage of Anemarrhena Rhizome.
