Effects of Dietary Levels of Vitamin A on Lipid Composition and Zn Contents in Zn-deficient Rats (비타민 A의 공급수준이 Zn 결핍식이를 섭취한 흰쥐의 체내 지질성분과 Zn 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary levels of vitamin A on the lipid composition in rats fed Zn-deficient diets. Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed 5 experimental diets for 7 weeks. Rats were fed Zn-and vitamin A-deficient diet or the same diets supplemented with various levels of vitamin. A liver total lipid, cholesterol and triglycerides contents tended to decrease in Zn-deficient rats, but the supplementation of excess vitamin A enhanced those contents. Plasma cholesterol content was significantly higher in feeding Zn-deficient and excess vitamin A diet. Plasma triglyceride and phospolipid contents were higher in Zn-deficient groups, but not influenced by dietary levels of vitamin. A . Plasma HDL-cholesterol content was not changed by Zn-deficient diets. Plasma alkaline phosphatase activity was significantly reduced in Zn-deficient groups. Zinc contents of plasma and liver were influenced by the dietary level of zinc, but not changed by supplementation of vitamin A.

Dietary Fat Intake during Pregnancy and Serum Lipid Levels in Mother and Umbilical Cord of Full-term and Preterm Delivery (만기분만의 조기분만 산모의 임신중 지방섭취와 모체 및 제대혈청의 지질농도)

  • The correlation between maternal lipid nutritional status during pregnancy and gestational length was investigated. Subjects consisted of 30 full-term delivery mothers, 30 preterm delivery mothers, and babies of both groups. Dietary fat intake during pregnancy and serum lipid levels in mother and umbilical serum were measured. The mean daily intake levels of fatty acid during pregnancy were lower than the recommended dietary allowances, while $\omega$6/$\omega$3 ratios of dietary fatty acids were acceptable. For preterm delivery mothers, fatty acid intake levels to be lower than those in full-term delivery mothers, especially DHA intake of these two groups was significantly different. During gestation, hyperlipidemia was apparent in the pregnant women. The serum lipid contents of preterm delivery mothers tended to be lower than those of full-term delivery mothers, and umbilical cord serum lipid contents of the preterm delivery group tended to be higher than those of the full-term delivery group. Total cholesterol levels in the umbilical cord serum of preterm babies were significantly higher than those of full-term delivery group. On the other hand, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol levels between umbilical cord serum and maternal serum were positively correlated in the preterm delivery group. Concerning, energy and fatty acid intakes were more closely associated with umbilical cord serum lipid levels in full-term babies, but negatively associated in preterm babies. It was concluded that gestational length was related to the dietary intake of fatty acids such as DHA in pregnant women. For better understanding, the ralationship between placental lipid transport mechanisms and gestational length needs to be explored.

  • The effects of MCC and palm oil at different levels on lipid metabolism were assessed in adolescent rat. Dietary fat levels were 20% and 40% (kcal/kcal) and MCC level were 0%, 2%, and 4% (wt/wt). The experimental period took 8 weeks. During the experiment, weight gain and food efficiency ration were not affected by dietary factors. The weight of thymus however, was lower in high fat groups than in middle fat groups. The contents of total lipid and total cholesterol in plasma and HDL-cholesterol in plasma and HDL-cholesterol were significantly affected by dietary factors. The concentrations of cholesterol in LDL and VLDL , and the triglyceride content of VLDL was higher in high fat groups than in middle fat groups. Adding MCC lowered the LDL triglyceride in the high fat groups. The analysis of plasma fatty acids generally reflected the composition of the dietary palm oil. MCC had significant effects on total lipid and triglyceride of feces, but not on total cholesterol . In conclusion, the level of MCC had little hypolipodemic effects on lipid metabolism in rats fed a high fat diet. the middle fat group that contained 4% MCC showed increased contents of fecal triglyceride than the others, indicating that MCC had an effect on lipid absorption. Therefore, the other physiological functions of MCC need to be tested for their useful applications.

Effects of Alternatively Prepared Meju Methanolic Extracts on Dietary Lipid Digestion

  • We examined the effect of extracts of meju prepared with traditional and standardized methods on pancreatic lipase and the absorption of dietary lipid. Aqueous methanolic (80%, v/v) extracts of meju dose-dependently inhibited the activities of porcine pancreatic lipase. The plasma triglyceride levels in Imprinting Control Region mice after a single oral administration of lipid emulsion containing aqueous methanolic extracts from meju made by the standardized methods were lower than that of the group given a lipid emulsion containing the extracts of meju made by traditional methods. The inhibitory activity of the meju extract on dietary lipid digestion appears to be more closely associated with aglycone forms of phenolic compounds such as free isoflavones than with glycosides, since meju samples with higher total phenolic or free isoflavone content showed the stronger inhibition against pancreatic lipase. Furthermore, the data suggest that meju made using the standardized method, which contains higher levels of total isoflavones relative to traditionally prepared meju, could effectively suppress digestion of dietary lipids and therefore have the potential to help ameliorate hyperlipidemia and obesity.

The Effects of n-6/n-3 and P/S Ratio of Dietary Lipid on Lipid Metabolism of Rats at Different Age (n-6/n-3 비율과 P/S 비율을 변화시킨 식이지방이 나이가 다른 흰쥐의 체내 지방대사에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of age and dietary fatty acid composition on lipid metabolism were investigated in Sprague-Dawley strain male rats. These animals weighing 88.6$\pm$2.2g were fed 10% dietary fat(W/W, 20% of total energy) with 0.5, 1, 2 P/S ratio and in each P/S ratio there were three different levels of n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio ; 2, 4, 8. The experimental period was 1 month, 6 months and 12 months. The results of this study were as follows. The body weight of rats increased rapidly for the first two months, then increased slowly until 7 to 8 months. After 10 months of dietary regimen their weight decreased. The weight of liver, kidney and epidydimal fat pad increased along with the body weight and then decreased in the 12 months. Plasma total lipid increased with age and it decreased significantly when P/S ratio of dietary fatty acid was high. In creased with age and it decreased significantly when P/S ratio of dietary fatty acid was high. In creasing n-3 fatty acid intake in each P/S ratio resulted in lower plasma total lipid although was not statistically significant. The amount of plasma total cholesterol increased at 6 months, but decreased at 12 months. In case of 1, 12 months, increasing P/S ratio significantly plasma total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were decreased and hepatic cholesterol was increased, VLDL-HDL-cholesterol did not changed. The n-6/n-3 ratio did not affect any of theses. The amount of plasma triglyceride and VLDL-triglyceride increased at 6 month then decreased. When the rats consumed higher amount of n-3 fatty acid in each P/S ratio, their plasma triglyceride and hepatic triglyceride increased at 1, 12months.

Effects of Dietary Protein and Lipid Levels on Growth and Body Composition of Juvenile Sea Cucumber Stichopus japonicus (배합사료의 단백질 및 지질 함량이 어린 돌기해삼 Stichopus japonicus의 성장 및 체조성에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the proper dietary protein and lipid levels for growth and body composition of juvenile sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus. Three replicate groups of the sea cucumber(average weight of 1.1 g) were fed the experimental diets containing different levels of protein(10, 20, 30 and 40%) and lipid(3, 7 and 11%) for 10 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, survival of each group was over 87%, and there was no significant difference among the groups. Weight gain and specific growth rate(SGR) of sea cucumber were significantly affected by dietary protein(P<0.005) and lipid levels(P<0.001). The highest weight gain and SGR were observed when sea cucumber fed the diet containing 30% protein with 3% lipid(P<0.05). Weight gain and SGR of the sea cucumber fed the diet containing 3% lipid were higher than the other groups at the same protein level except for 40% protein group(P<0.05). Protein content of the sea cucumber fed the diet containing 30% protein with 3% lipid was significantly (P<0.05) higher than those fed 20% protein diets with 7% or 11% lipids and 10% protein diet with 7% lipid. Moisture, lipid and ash contents of the whole body were not significantly different among the groups. Fatty acid compositions such as linoleic acid, EPA(20:5n-3) and DHA(22:6n-3) of the whole body were affected by those of dietary lipid sources. The results of this study indicate that the diet containing 30% protein and 3% lipid is optimal for growth of juvenile sea cucumber.

Supplementary Effect of the High Dietary Fiber Rice on Lipid Metabolism in Diabetic KK Mice (고식이섬유쌀의 급여가 KK 당뇨 마우스의 체내 지질 대사에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the supplementary effects of Suwon 464 developed by Rural Development Administration, which has over two times of dietary fiber content compared with normal rice (Ilpum), on lipid metabolism in diabetic mice. We supplied 5 kinds of experimental diets (com starch diet as a control (CO), Ilpum polished rice diet (IP), Ilpum brown rice diet (IB), polished rice diet (SP) and brown rice diet (SB) of Suwon 464) to diabetic mice for 8 weeks, after analyzing dietary fiber contents of 5 experimental diets. Diet intake, body weight, organ weights, and lipids levels of serum, liver and feces were measured. The dietary fiber contents in CO, IP, IB, SP, and SB diets were 1.0, 1.2, l.4, 1.4, and 2.0% respectively. Body weight and liver and epididymal fat pad weights were lower in SB group than the other groups though there was no significant difference in diet intake among experimental groups. The concentrations of serum triglyceride was lower in SP and SB groups than CO and IP groups. The levels of hepatic total lipid and total cholesterol were significantly lower in SP and SB groups than CO group, and the level of hepatic triglyceride was lower in IB, SP and SB groups than CO group. The levels of total lipid and triglyceride excreted in feces were higher in IB, SP and SB, and the level of total cholesterol in feces was higher in SP and SB groups than CO group. These results suggested that the high dietary fiber rice (Suwon 464) decrease the triglyceride or total cholesterol concentrations of serum and liver by increasing of fecal lipid excretion in diabetic mice. Effects of Diets on Serum and Liver Lipid Levels and Fatty Acid Composition of Liver Phospholipids in Rats

  • Serum and liver lipid levels and fatty acid composition of liver phospolipids (PL) were investigated in 36 rats which consumed either one of five different dietary fats or a high carbohydrate diet for 4 weeks. As the sources of five dietary fats, concentrated cicosapentaenoic acid(EPA), fish oil (FO), perilla oil(PO), corn oil(CO) and beef tallow (BT) were provided to the rats. As a control group, cron starch (CS) replaced dietary fat. The FO group showed lower serum total cholesterol (TC), high density lipiprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) and serum PL levels than those of the CO group(p<0.05). There were no significant differences in serum TC and serum HDL-C levels between the polyunsatured fatty acid(PUFA) groups and the EPA, FO and PO groups. The CS group showed the highest level serum TC. Compared with the CS group, both the EPA and CO groups showed significantly lower atherogenic indices(AI). However, there were no significant differences in AI among different dietary fat groups. No significant differences in liver triglyceride (TG) , TC and PL levels were detected among the six experimental groups. Phosphatidylcholine(PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine(PE) composed 30-40% and 15-20% of total liver PL, respectively. The fatty acid composition of liver PC and PE reflected dietary fatty acid composition . Compared to the different dietary fat based diets used in our study, the high carbohydrate diet had the most adverse effects on serum lipid profiles. However, we can not conclude from this result that long chain n-3 PUFA diets such as the EPA and FO based diets have more beneficial effects on serum lipid profiles than n-6 PUFA diet such as the CO based diet or shorter chain n-3 PUFA diets like the PO based diet.

Influence of fat levels and types of dietary fiber on lipid metabolism of rats (식이중 지방 수준과 Fiber 종류가 흰쥐의 지방대사에 미치는 영향)

  • The influence of fat level and dietary fiber on serum and liver lipid concentration of the rat was investigated. Groups of rats were fed respectively 3%, 5%, 20% fat containing and free fiber diet until 5th week. From 5th week to 9th week high fat diet groups of rates were devided high fat diet group, high fat pectin supplemented diet group and high fat celulose supplemented diet group. Pectin and cellulose at 10% was supplemented to high fat diets. After rats were fed for 9 weeks, all rats were sacrificed to collect the liver and blood samples by heart puncture. Serum and liver lipids were determined on all rats and compared the histochemical lipid staining method with the biochemical analysis of serum and liver lipids. A high fat diet caused increased level of the total lipids, total cholesterol and free cholesterol contents in the liver and the serum. Rats fed pectin reduced body weight, werum lipid and liver lipid but cellulose had no effect to reduce serum and liver lipid concentration. These results indicate that dietary fat level led to changes in the lipid metabolism of rats and that pectin was more effective in lowering serum and liver lipid than cellulose.

The Effect of the Levels of Dietary Zinc and Alcohol Consumption on Lipid Metabolism in the Rats (식이성 아연과 알코올의 섭취 수준이 흰쥐의 지질 대사에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of the levels of dietary Zn and alcohol consumption on lipid metabolism in Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 80 to 90g for eight weeks. Ninety rats were divided into nine groups according to Zn levels and alcohol consumption such as no alcohol group[low Zn diet group(<1ppm. LZ) control Zn diet group(30ppm. CZ) high Zn diet group(60ppm, HZ)] 10% alcohol consumption group[the same Zn levels as no alcohol group LZLA, CZLA, HZLA] 20% alcohol consumption group[the same Zn levels as no alcohol group, LZHA, CZHA, HZHA] The results obtained were summarized as following : 1) In the serum total cholesterol increased with increasing dietary Zn levels but decreased with alcohol consumption. HDL-cholesterol decreased with alcohol consumption. Triglyce-ride in alcohol group was higher than no alcohol group. In alcohol group triglyceride increased with decreasing dietary Zn levels. 2) In the liver total lipid in alcohol group was higher than no alcohol group HA group showed a significant increase. Triglyceride increased with alcohol consumption. 3) In the serum and liver Zn content increased with increasing dietary Zn levels but decreased with alcohol consumption.
