The exhaust emissions from diesel vehicle are known to be harmful to human health and environment. Recently, one of the most environment problems is particulate matter. In this study, through the actual exper iment and heat transfer of exhaust pipe in light duty diesel engine equipped with the ceramic filter trap of throttling type, following results are obtained. 1. In case of light duty diesel engine equipped with ceramic filter trap of throttling type, Power and torque of engine were decreased about 5%, compared with the case without trap system. It means that was not so much effect on base engine performance.2. If the length of exhaust pipe when equipping with ceramic filter trap is suitably controlled, the range of regeneration will be expand much more.3. Particulate matter reduction efficiency of ceramic filter trap system was about 70%-80%, so it was proved a good system to reduce particulate matter. In experiment, test was conducted to estimate engine emission in 2,476cc light duty diesel engine which was equipped with ceramic filter trap.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, 1989) has classified whole diesel exhaust as probably carcinogenic to humans. Diesel exhaust particulate matter (DPM) adsorbs different chemical substances including PAHs and nitroarenes. DPM is emphasized because it is a major component of diesel exhaust, it is suspected of contributing to a health hazard. Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of carbon particles and associated organics and inorganics, and it is not known what fraction or combination of fractions cause the health effects [cancer effects, noncancer effects (respiratory tract irritation/inflammation and changes in lung function)] that have been observed with exposure to diesel exhaust. In order to identify which chemical classes are responsible for the majority of the observed biological activities, we performed a particular biological/chemical analysis. Respirable particulate matter (PM2.5: <2.5mm) was collected from diesel engine exhaust using a high-volume sampler equipped with a cascade impactor. Particulate oganic matter was extracted by the dichloromethane/sonication method and the crude extract was fractionated according to EPA recommended procedure into seven fractions by acid-base partitioning and silica gel column chromatography. We examined genotoxic potentials of diesel exhaust particulate matter using novel genotoxicity tests, which are rapid, simple and sensitive methods for assessing DNA-damage at the DNA and chromosomal level (comet assay, in vitro MN test and Ames test). Higher genotoxic potency was observed in non polar fractions and several PAHs were detected by GC-MS, such as 1,2,5,6 dibenzanthracene, chrysene, 1,2-benzanthracene, phenanthrene and fluoranthene.

Diesel exhaust is suspected to cause acute and chronic adverse effects on health. In recent. the effect of estrogenic endocrine disruptor in diesel particulate matter was little studied. Therefore, we examined the estrogenic activity of respirable diesel exhaust particulate matter derived from diesel engine motor. PM2.5 diesel exhaust of vehicle was collected using a high volume samples equipped with a cascade impactor. (omitted)

It has been reported that exposure to particulate matter is linked to increase lung cancer risk. Recently it is confirmed that diesel exhaust particulate matter (DEP), which derives from diesel powered vehicles, is contributed as a major pollutant in urban air-borne particulate matter.(omitted)
Among aftertreatment devices which reduce exhaust gas of diesel engine, diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) with high reduction efficiency for gaseous matter and particulate matter is now being studied actively. In this study, an experiment was conducted to analyze the effects of low sulfur diesel fuel in heavy duty diesel engine equipped with DOC. We tested to estimate change of engine performance for the low and high sulfur diesel fuels in a 11,000cc diesel engine equipped with DOC. We conducted test to estimate the reduction efficiency of exhaust gas in D-13 mode of heavy duty diesel regulation mode and in smoke opacity mode for two samples of high sulfur content (0.2%) and low sulfur content(0.05%)

This study was to measure the exposure of diesel vehicle drivers to elemental carbon (EC) as an indicator of diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted from diesel vehicles in an underground coal mine over 3 years as per NIOSH Method 5040. Our study results (range $10{\mu}g/m^3-377{\mu}g/m^3$ for the loader drivers, $19{\mu}g/m^3-162{\mu}g/m^3$ for the SMV drivers) were similar or less than previous study results (range $5{\mu}g/m^3-2,200{\mu}g/m^3$) for normal mine operations. From this study results, it appeared that the exposures decreased in the second and the third year. It is thought that the reasons for the decreased personal DPM (EC) exposures over the 3 years were related to the following recommendations; more frequent monitoring and maintenance of the diesel vehicles and their DPM filtration systems, more consistent monitoring of the mine's ventilation system and changes of work practices such as minimizing the opening of diesel vehicle windows. An educational program on adverse health effects of exposure to DPM and use of respiratory protection (P2 respirators) also assisted in minimizing driver exposure to DPM.
In order to reduce particulate matters (PM) from marine diesel engines, we developed novel electrostatic diesel particulate matter filtration system. Electrostatic diesel particulate filtration (DPF) system consists of electrostatic charger and filtration part. The electrostatic charger and filtration part are composed of a metal discharge electrode and a metal fiber filter (porosity: 68.1-86.1%), respectively. In the electrostatic charger part, diesel soot particles are reduced by electrostatic force. The filtration part after electrostatic charger part reduces diesel soot particles through inertial and diffusion forces. The filtration efficiency of electrostatic DPF system was examined through the experiments using engine dynamometer system (300 kW) and ship (200 kW). The PM reduction efficiencies due to inertial and electrostatic forces showed about 70-75% and 80-90%, respectively, according to the RPM of the engine. The differential pressure of the electrostatic DPF system applied to the ship was about 1-9 mbar, which was less than the allowable differential pressure for ship engines in South Korea (100 mbar). The results show that the electrostatic DPF system is suitable for application to the PM reduction emitted from ships.
Particulate matters (PM) which are collected into a diesel particulate filter (DPF) system have to be periodically removed by thermal oxidation. In this report, we fabricated an electrohydrodynamic-assisted pressure-swirl nozzle to spray diesel droplets finer. Atomization performance of the nozzle was evaluated using both experimental and numerical methods. Two types of nozzle designs, the charge induction type and the charge injection type, were tested. While the former generated diesel droplets of $400\;{\mu}m$ at an applied electric potential over 10 kV, the latter presented the droplets smaller than $23\;{\mu}m$ at an applied electric potential of 8 kV. The numerical simulation results showed that the reduced size of droplets caused higher evaporation of droplets and therefore the increased temperature, which would eventually increase the regeneration performance of the DPF system.
This work reviews the effects of catalyst formulation and exhaust gas composition on soot oxidation in CDPF (Catalytic Diesel Particulate Filter). DOC's (Diesel Oxidation Catalysts) have been loaded with Pt catalyst (Pt/$Al_{2}O_3$) for reduction of HC and CO. Recent CDPF's are coated with the Pt catalyst as well as additives like Mo, V, Ce, Co, Fe, La, Au, or Zr for the promotion of soot oxidation. Alkali (K, Na, Cs, Li) doping of metal catalyst tends to increase the activity of the catalysts in soot combustion. Effects of coexistence components are very important in the catalytic reaction of the soot. The soot oxidation rate of a few catalysts are improved by water vapor and NOx in the ambient. There are only a few reports available on the mechanism of the PM (particulate matter) oxidation on the catalysts. The mechanism of PM oxidation in the catalytic systems that meet new emission regulations of diesel engines has yet to be investigated. Future research will focus on catalysts that can not only oxidize PM at low temperature, but also reduce NOx, continuously self-cleaning diesel particulate filters, and selective catalysts for NOx reduction.
This paper presents a novel structure for a diesel particulate filter (DPF) with inclined gas paths, which was designed so that the gas paths offered a fluent flow of exhaust gases, and particulate matter (PM) was collected at pores formed in the body. The alumina porous filter was prepared by a conventional sintering process at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Straight gas paths with $30^{\circ}$ of inclination from the gas flow direction were formed in the filter body. It is shown that this filter structure worked as a PM filter, in which 90.2% of soot filtration efficiency and 59.6 mbar of pressure drop were achieved.
