  • Diesel engine is most suitable one for biodiesel fuel because the compression-ignition diesel engine has desirable fuel consumption due to higher thermal efficiency and in addition, the improvement of the fuel consumption also leads to a reduction of $CO_2$ emission and then it does not need to have spark-ignition system, which means that there is less charge on the technic and complexity. In this study, the spray behavior characteristics of the vegetable palm oil were analyzed by using a common-rail injection system of commercial diesel engine and the results were compared with those obtained for the diesel fuel. The injection pressures and blend ratios of palm oil and diesel(BD3, BD5, BD20, BD30, BD50, and BD100) were the main parameters. The experiments were conducted for different injection pressures: 500bar, 1000bar, 1500bar, and 1600bar by setting injection duration to $500{\mu}s$. Consequently, it was found that there is no significant difference in the macro characteristics of the spray behavior(spray penetration and spray angle) in response to change in the blend ratio of palm oil and diesel at a fixed injection pressure. In particular, all experiments showed the spray angle about $12^{\circ}{\sim}13^{\circ}$.

  • The objective of this work is to analyze the atomization and evaporation characteristics of dimethyl ether(DME) fuel for the application of HCCI diesel engine. In order to investigate the spray behavior of DME fuel, the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics were investigated in terms of spray development, spray tip penetration, impingement time, SMD, and axial mean velocity under the various injection timing and ambient conditions. For the illumination of spray, the spray visualization system was composed of a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera and laser-sheet method was used. The atomization characteristics of DME fuel are analyzed by using phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system It was reveal that the spray development of DME is slower and rapidly disappeared as elapsed time after start of injection at the same injection duration. The impingement timing of diesel fuel was fester than that of DME fuel. The comparison of spray atomization characteristics in both fuels shows that diesel fuel has a large SMD value that DME.

  • An experimental investigation has been carried out to reveal the atomization process of the diesel fuel spray. The spray injected through a single hole nozzle was taken by a camera on the opposite side of a stroboscope for macroscopic observation or a nanolite for microscopic observation. The effect of nozzle aspect ratio was analyzed with disintegration phenomena of the diesel spray. Based on the enlarged spray photograph, atomization process was observed in detail and further the spray cone angle was measured under various ambient pressures. The result shows that atomization of diesel spray in early stage of injection is mainly progressed in the vicinity of spray periphery region except the region close to the nozzle exit and spray head region. The spray cone angle is nearly constant under the pressurized condition, while it decreases with elapsing time under the atmospheric condition.

In terms of the macroscopic spray combustion characteristics it is observed that the fuel jet atomization and the droplet breakup processes become much faster by increasing the injection pressure and the spray angle. With increasing the cylinder pressure there is a tendency that the shape of spray pattern in the downstream region tends to be spherical due to the increase of air density and the corresponding drag force. • Because an injected spray development process consists of impinging and free spray in the diesel engine, it is needed to analyze the impinging spray and free spray, simultaneously, in order to study the diesel spray behavior. To dominate combustion characteristics in diesel engine is interaction between injected fuel and ambient gas, that is, process of mixture formation. Also it is very important to analyze liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel on the investigation of mixing process, respectively and simultaneously. Therefore, in this study, the behavior characteristics of the liquid phase and the vapor phase of diesel spray was studied by using exciplex fluorescence method in high temperature and injection pressure field. Finally, it can be confirmed that the distribution of vapor concentration is more uniform in the case of the high injection than in that of the low injection pressure.

  • The using of diesel engine will be increased in the world for fuel economy. But diesel engine emits harmful emissions such as much NOx, smoke etc. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the spray characteristics of diesel spray in a common-rail system according to fuel temperature, injection pressure, injection period and fuel viscosity etc. using a high speed video camera. Diesel oil has different spray patten due to injection pressure and injection period in a common-rail system. A Filter pressure was influenced by fuel temperature which was turned to fuel viscosity related to a fluid flowing. The effect of the bio-diesel fuel mixing ratio on the spray and atomization characteristics was also investigated at various experimental conditions. It shows that the droplet atomization characteristics of bio-diesel fuel showed deteriorated results as the mixing ratio of biodiesel increased because of the high viscosity.

  • The pupose of this study is to measure droplet size and velocity simultaneously for a transient diesel fuel spray in a quiescent chamber at atmospheric temperature and pressure. Generally, diesel combustion phenomena is mainly governed by characteristics of injection system and fuel spray. Therefore we need to clarify these characteristics for developing more economical diesel systems. In this study, correlation between droplet size and velocity was measured at downstream distance from nozzle. Governing parameters are pump speed and fuel quantity for the detailed nature in this transient diesel fuel spray. It is observed effect to the droplet size and velocity distribution. Velocity(peak, mean, rms), number density and droplet size were investigated simulaneously using PDA in the spray. Various results are presented to illustrate the effects of operation factors and correlation between the droplet diameter and velocity.

Separation ratio of emulsified fuel was shown good condition that of water content is small and longer ultrasonic energy adding time. Viscosity of emulsified fuel increased 79% with addition to water content and surface tension increased 1.6% in comparision to pure diesel oil. The SMD of emulsified fuel adding ultrasonic energy decreased with 3% in comparision to pure diesel oil. With increasing 5, 10% water content the SMD decreased 15.6, 20.1% in comparision to pure diesel oil. The mind-explosion was investigated with 4step.

  • Of the macroscopic spray characteristics of non-reacting diesel fuel sprays, the spray angle reflects directly the atomization and air entrainment processes downstream the nozzle. In addition, spray angle is important because it will be closely related to the spray penetration. The existing definitions for the measurement of spray angle as well as the correlations for the prediction of spray angle are, therefore, summarized and reviewed. The existing definition of spray angle can be classified into four groups: distance based on orifice diameter, distance based on spray tip penetration, definition based on surface wave, and definition based on atomization. It is strongly required to specify the definition and measurement method when the data for spray angle is reported. The existing correlations for spray angle can be classified into two groups: theoretical and empirical correlations. The study on the evaluation of the existing correlations fer spray angle is required.
