  • The purpose of this study was to investigate reduction of exhaust gas temperature in LPG conversion engine from diesel. A conventional diesel engine was modified to a LPG(Liquified Petroleum Gas) engine that diesel fuel injection pump was replaced by the LPG fuel system. The research was peformed with measurement of exhaust gas temperature by varying spark ignition timing, air-fuel ratio, compression ratio, EGR ratio and different compositions of butane and propane. The major conclusion of this work were followed. (i) Exhaust gas temperature was decreased and power was increased with the advanced spark ignition timing. (ii) Exhaust gas temperature was decreased with lean and rich air-fuel ratio. (iii)Exhaust gas temperature was decreased and power was increased with the higher compression ratio. (iv) Engine power and exhaust temperature were not influenced by varied butane/propane fuel compositions. (v) Finally, one of the important parameters in reduction of exhaust gas temperature is spark ignition timing among the parameters in this study.

  • To improve efficiency of diesel engine which requests high output recently and is used all kinds of industrial areas, this thesis experimented dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas characteristics of diesel engine installed by supercharger of correspondent output 200HP and natural inhalation diesel engine through the dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer in same condition. As the result of experiment with natural inhalation diesel engine and diesel engine installed by supercharger, there were a few differences of output, but dynamic characteristics at high speed showed increased output and efficiency of the engine installed by supercharger. On the contrary, in exhaust gas characteristics, the model installed by supercharger showed increased exhaust gas such as $NO_X$, $O_2$, etc, but added value of exhaust gas is low if considering $CO_2$ reduction and efficiency of dynamic characteristic's increase. Based on the results, diesel engine installed by supercharger is expected to show higher economic feasibility than natural inhalation diesel than natural inhalation engine from an angle of efficiency. Keywords: 200hp class Turbocharger, Exhaust Gas, Engine Performance, Marine Diesel Engine.

  • Recently, Our planet is faced with very serious problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. So, lots of researchers have studied to reduce the exhaust emissions of diesel engine that influenced the environment strong. But most researchers have mainly studied and suggested the solution of reduction on the total exhaust emissions of diesel engine. In this study, the quantities of the low and high hydrocarbon among the exhaust emissions in diesel engine have been investigated by the quantitative analysis of the hydrocarbon C1~C6 using the gas chromatography. This study carried out by comparing the chromatograms with diesel fuel and mixed fuel which are blended the diesel and DMC(dimethyl carbonate)that includes the oxygen of about 53%. The results of this study show that the hydrocarbon C1~C6 among the exhaust emissions of the mixed fuel are exhausted lower than those of the diesel fuel at the all load.

  • A commercial diesel engine was converted into a dedicated natural gas engine to reduce the exhaust emissions in a retrofit of a diesel-fueled vehicle. The cylinder head and piston were remodeled into engine parts suited for a spark ignition engine using natural gas. The remodeling of the combustion chamber changed the compression ratio from 21.5 to 10.5. A multi-point port injection(MPI) system for a dedicated natural gas engine was also adopted to increase the engine power and torque through improved volumetric efficiency, to allow a rapid engine response to changes in throttle position, and to control the precise equivalence ratio during cold-start and engine warm-up. The performance and exhaust emissions of the retrofitted natural gas engine after remodeling a diesel engine are investigated. The emissions of the retrofitted natural gas engine were low enough to satisfy the limits for a transitional low emission vehicle(TLEV) in Korea. We concluded that a diesel engine can be effectively converted into a dedicated natural gas engine without any deterioration in engine performance or exhaust emissions.

A conventional diesel engine was modified to a LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) engine by replacing the diesel fuel injection pump with a LPG fuel system. The research was performed by measuring the exhaust gas temperature upon varying spark ignition timing, airfuel ratio, compression ratio, and different compositions of butane and propane. Engine power and exhaust temperature were not influenced by various butane/propane fuel compositions. Finally, among the parameters studied in this investigation, spark ignition timing is one of the most important in reducing exhaust gas temperature.

  • Recently the world is faced with the very serious problems related to the increasing use of the conventional petroleum fuels. THe air pollutions in big cities were also occurred by the exhaust emissions from automobiles. many researchers have been attracted various oxygenated fuels as an alternative fuel and a renewable fuel for the measure of these problems. In this study the effect of oxygen in fuel on the exhaust gas emissions has been investigated with oxygenated fuels as an alternative fuel for diesel engine. The exhaust gas emission were investigated by comparing with that of the diesel fuel. The vegetable fuel oil such as soybean oil gives lower smoke level than that with diesel fuel. Furthermore the smoke emission is more affected by the oxygen content in fuel than by the fuel viscosity. This study concluded that the fuels including oxygen might be a good measure to reduce smoke in diesel engine because the oxygen strongly influenced the combustion process.

  • The purpose of this study os to investigate how the natural gas in fuel blend influences the polutant emission of diesel engine. Four stroke cycle single cylinder engine is used for this experiment and four kind of fuel blends were made. Fuel blends show four different torque ratios between diesel oil and natural gas, which are 4 : 0. 3 : 1, 2 : 2 and 1 : 3. The constituents of exhaust gases of engine are analyzed for every fuel blend. The experimental results say that the mixing of natural gas into diesel fuel is an very effective way to reduce the amount of soot in the exhaust gas.

  • The effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of exhaust emissions and specific fuel consumption have been investigated using an eight-cylinder, four cycle, direct injection diesel engine operating at several loads and speeds. The experiments in this study are conducted on the fixed fuel injection timing of $38^{\circ}$ BTDC regardless of experimental conditions. In conclusion, it is found that $NO_{x}$ emission is markedly reduced with the drop of burnt gas temperature at high speeds and loads especially as the EGR rate increases, while the soot particulate rises with EGR rate and load at a given engine speed, especially high loads. The reduction of exhaust emissions within the Korea heavy duty diesel engine emission standards can be roughly achieved by the optimal EGR rate without degarding the specific fuel consumption, based on the correlations between exhaust emissions.

  • Recently, our world is faced with very serious and hard problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated fur direct injection diesel engine. It was tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenate blended fuel which has three kinds of mixed ratio. And, it was tried to analyze not only total hydrocarbon but individual hydrocarbon components from Cl to C6 in exhaust gas using gas chromatography to seek the reason far remarkable reduction of smoke emission. This study was carried out by comparing the chromatogram with diesel fuel and diesel feel blended DGM(diethylene glycol dimethyl ether) 5%. The results of this study show that individual hydrocarbon(C1∼C6) as well as total hydrocarbon of oxygenated fuel is reduced remarkably than that of diesel fuel.
