The present article presents an extension to the computational model for spray/wall interaction and liquid film processes that has been dealt with in the earlier studies (Lee and Ryou, 2000a). The extensions incorporate film spread due to impingement forces and dynamic motion induced by film inertia to predict the dynamic characteristics of wall films effectively. The film model includes the impingement pressure of droplets, tangential momentum transfer due to the impinging droplets on the film surface and the gas shear force at the film surface. Validation of the spray/wall interaction model and the film model was carried out for non-evaporative diesel sprays against several sources of experimental data. The computational model for spray/wall interactions was in good agreement with experimental data for both spray radius and height. The film model in the present work was better than the previous static film model, indicating that the dynamic effects of film motion should be considered for wall films. On the overall the present film model was acceptable for predication of the film radius and thickness.

It is unavoidable that the fuel spray impinges on the wall of piston cavity in a compact high-pressure D.I. diesel engine. Therefore the characteristics of impinging spray are the very significant information on the consideration and the simulation of its combustion processes including the formation mechanism of exhaust emission and the design of the combustion chamber. In this paper, the numerical simulation was performed to study the characteristics of impinging spray. The spray-wall impingement model used is Watkins and Park's model. Calculation parameters are the inclination angles and the ambient pressures. As the inclination angle increases, the impinging spray develops mainly to the direction of the downstream and scarcely flows to that of the upstream. The shape on the wall of the impinging spray is the circle in the case of the normal impingement, while it is the ellipse in that of the oblique impingement. As the ambient pressure increases, the growth of impinging spray on the wall in the radial direction decreases owing to the increase in the resistance of the ambient.
The false diffusion occurs generally when the flow is oblique to the grid lines and when there is a non-zero gradient of the dependent variable in the direction normal to the flow. This numerical problem can overestimate diffusion terms in the continuous phase, causing the numerical inaccuracy for the simulation of impinging sprays on inclined walls because most of spray calculation uses rectangular grid system. Therefore, the main objective of this article is to investigate numerically the influence of false diffusion on numerical simulation for spray-wall impingement on inclined walls. It is found that unlike the spray impingement normal to the wall, the numerical diffusion exists in the case when diesel sprays impinge on the inclined walls with different angles. The results show that the correction function should be considered for accurate prediction of spray penetration length and more elaborate numerical schemes should be utilized to reduce the false diffusion.
Most of the research of small engines to date focused on developing spark ignition engines occupied much parts. Recently the number of a small direct injection diesel engine applied in small cars has been increased and considered as a next generation power source for passenger cars because of its high efficiency. Therefore the combustion chamber becomes smaller and the fuel injection pressure goes higher, which makes fuel sprays impinged easily on the combustion chamber walls. When strong swirls are not induced, the fuel may not mix with air because of fuel deposition on the wall. As a positive way, the combustion chamber systems which is using spray wall impaction has been introduced and assessed by an experimental or a simulate manner. In these systems the raised lands are positioned in tile chamber for spray impaction in order to break up the fuel drops into much smaller and direct them into desirable direction. This study addresses to the effects of rho position and size of the raised land or glow plug to help the chamber design using spray wall impaction. The characteristics of the spray impinged on various lands are investigated and compared with each other. Then the chamber shapes are discussed with the characteristics and their proper position and size is proposed in any chamber volume.

Characteristics of a diesel spray impingement with the variation of ambient temperature, wall temperature and ambient pressure were investigated through shadowgraphy method by using high speed camera. The radial penetration of spray was increased with ambient temperature and wall temperature. It is resulted from the decrease of ambient gas density caused by the increase of temperature. The height of spray was also increased with ambient temperature and wall temperature, because the height of stagnate region is noticeably increased, although height of wall jet vortex is decreased. At the same ambient pressure, the area ratio of impinging spray of room temperature environment to high temperature environment was increased, as the temperature difference between room temperature and high temperature increases. And the increment of area ratio was higher at low ambient pressure than high ambient pressure.
To understand the transient behavior of droplets after impingement in a diesel engine, a numerical model for diesel sprays impinging on a flat wall is newly developed by the proposition of several mathematical formulae to determine the post-impingement characteristics of droplets. The new model consists of three representative regimes such as rebound, deposition and splash. The gas phase is modeled in terms of the Eulerian conservation equations, and the dispersed phase is calculated using a discrete droplet model. To validate the new model, the calculated results are compared with several experimental data. The results show that the new model is generally in good agreement with the experimental data. Therefore, it is thought that the new model is acceptable for the prediction of transient behavior of wall sprays.
NUFLEX is a general purpose thermo/fluid flow analysis program which has various physical models including spray. In NUFLEX, spray models are composed of breakup and collision models of droplet. However, in case of diesel engine, interaction between wall-film and impingement model considering heat transfer is not coded in NUFLEX. In this study, Lee & Ryou impingement & wall-film model considering heat transfer is applied to NUFLEX. For the verification of this NUFLEX program, numerical results are compared with experimental data. Differences of film thickness and radius between numerical results and experimental data are within 10% error range. The results show that NUFLEX can be used for comprehensive analysis of spray phenomena.
Many of thermodynamic-based diesel combustion simulations incorporated a model of fuel spray which attempts to describe how the spray develops according to time. Because the spray geometry is an essential aspect of the fuel-air mixing process, it is necessary to be calculated quantitatively for the purpose of heat release and emission analysis. In this paper, we proposed the calculating method of non-evaporation spray behaviors by injection rate shapes under actual operating conditions of diesel engine. We confirmed the utility of this calculating model as the calculated results were compared with the measured results. This calculating program can be applied usefully to study on the diesel spray behavior.
The authors have reported significant reductions in particulate emissions of diesel engines by generating strong turbulence during the combustion process. This study aims to identify optimum conditions of turbulent mixing for effective soot reduction during combustion. The experiments were conducted with a constant volume combustion vessel equipped with abet-generating cell, in which a small amount of fuel is injected during the combustion of the main spray. The jet of burned gas from the cell impinges the main flame, causing changes In the mixing of fuel and air. Observation was made for a variety combinations of distances between spray nozzle and Jet orifice at different directions of impingement. It Is shown that compared with the case without Jet flame soot decreases when the jet impinges. When the jet is very close to the flame, it penetrates the soot cloud and causes little mixing. There were no apparent differences in the combustion duration when the direction of impingement was varied, although the mechanisms of soot reduction seemed different. An analysis of local turbulent flews with PIV (Particle image Velocimetry) showed the relationship between the scale of the turbulence and the size of the soot cloud.

It is an aim of this study to perform extensive numerical study for analyzing the anisotropic turbulence effects on spatial and temporal behaviors of diesel sprays after wall impingement. The turbulence model of Durbin is used for comparisons with the $k-\varepsilon$ model. The turbulence-induced dispersions of droplets are considered to describe the anisotropy of turbulence effectively and the spray/wall interactions are simulated using the model of Lee and Ryou. The present study investigates the internal structures of impinging diesel sprays such as Sauter mean diameter (SMD), loca1 droplet velocities, and local gas velocities and also compares the results predicted by two turbulence models with the experimental data. The Durbin's model considering the anisotropy of turbulence predicts both gas and droplet tangential velocities better than the$k-\varepsilon$ model does. It is concluded that the anisotropy of turbulence should be considered in simulating impinging diesel sprays.
