Recently, as people pay attention to the environmental pollution, the emission of diesel engine has become a serious problem. Diesel Oxidation Catalysts(DOC) were experimentally investigated for the purification of pollutants exhaust emission from the diesel engine. In this study, the conversion efficiency of exhaust gas was investigated with various washcoat materials of the DOC. It was formed that CO conversion efficiency depended on temperature, but THC conversion was dominated by temperature and space velocity. Conversion efficiency of THC and CO increased with the addition of ZSM-5 in the washcoat, whereas these conversion efficiency decreased by adding Nd and Ba additives. $V_2O_5$ additive had the thermal stability for high temperature. Thermal durability of the catalyst was improved as increase of $V_2O_5$ additive.
Automobile industry has been developed rapidly as a key manufacturing industry in Korea. Meanwhile, air pollution is getting worse noticeably than ever. In the diesel emission, PM (Particulate Matter) and NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) have been exhausted with a great amount and the corresponding emission regulations are getting stringent. In order to develop low emission engines, it is necessary to research on better qualified fuels. Sulfur contained in fuel is transformed to sulfur compound by DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and then it causes to the increase of sulfate-laden PM on the surface of catalyst. In this research, ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) is used as a fuel and some experimental results are investigated. ULSD can reduce not only PM but also gas materials because cetane value, flash point, distillation 90%, pour point and viscosity are improved in the process of desulfurization. However, excessively reduced sulfur may cause to decease lubricity of fuel and engine performance in fuel injection system. Therefore, it requires only modest adjusted amount of sulfur can improve engine performance and DOC, as well as decrease of emission.
Particulate matters(PM) have bad effect on the health. We carried out measurements of diesel PM under $10{\mu}m$ diameter from a HSDI diesel engine with a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) by using the ELPI. This paper compares the two results of the smoke level and the PM level of masses and numbers. We also investigated the effect of the DOC. Under high speed and load, HSDI diesel engine exhausts much masses of particulate matters over 100nm diameter, and a number of PM from 7 to 100nm diameters at the same condition. DOC could reduce the total mass of the PM. However, the DOC could increase the number of ultra fine PM. Before light-off of the soot, the DOC absorb the PM and the DOC oxidize the PM after light-off temperature. The fine PM could be made during the oxidation. Therefore, the advanced DOC is needed to reduce the number of the fine PM.

Recently, among after-treatment devices which have high possibility of utility, diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) is concerned over the world. DOC oxidizes pollutants by means of activate-reaction during by -passing in the catalyst, in doing so, conversion efficiency of PM, CO and HC is high, and this device does not have an effect on engine performance because back pressure is not nearly increased. But, as a small amount of sulfur content in fuel is oxidized, it makes sulfate, which is absorbed on the surface of catalyst. So, in this study, the experiment is carried out by means of using ordinary fuel (0.1wt%) and low sulfur fuel (0.05wt%) with DOC, and the emission gas of diesel engine is measured.
It seems very difficult to comply with upcoming stringent emission standards in vehicles. To develop low emission engines, better quality of automotive fuels must be achieved. Since sulfur contents in diesel fuels are transformed to sulfate-laden particulate matters as a catalyst is applied, it is necessary to provide low sulfur fuels before any Pt-based oxidation catalysts are applied. In general, flash point, distillation $90\%$ and cetane index are improved but viscosity can be worse in the process of desulfurization of diesel fuel. Excessive reduction of sulfur may cause to degrade viscosity of fuels and engine performance in fuel injection systems. This research focused on the performance of an 11,000 cc diesel engine and emission characteristics by the introduction of ULSD, bio-diesel and a diesel oxidation catalyst, where the bio-diesel was used to improve viscosity of fuels in fuel injection systems as fuel additives or alternative fuels.

Recently emission regulation on diesel vehicles is getting stringent and research on aftertreatment technology such as DPF and DOC has been carried out actively. Even though PM(Particulate matters) reduction efficiency in DOC is relatively low but the structure is simpler and very effective in the reduction of gas materials and unregulated materials. Therefore it has been applied to smaller diesel vehicles. The aims of this research is to investigate the emission reduction characteristics of DOC; DOC performance of regulated and unregulated material emission reduction. It results a Pt based catalyst demonstrated higher emission reduction efficiency than a Pt-V based catalyst in CVS-75 mode, and also the reduction efficiency of unidentified material was excellent.
The enormous increase in the use of fossil energy sources throughout the world has caused severe air pollution and a depletion of energy. Besides, it seems very difficult to comply with the upcoming stringent emission standards in vehicles. In order to develop low emission engines, research on better qualified fuels as alternative fuels to secure high engine performance becomes a more important issue than ever. Since sulfur contained in diesel fuel is transformed in sulfate-laden particulate matters when a catalyst is applied, it is necessary to provide low sulfur fuels before any Pt-based oxidation catalysts are applied. But the excessive reduction of sulfur levels may cause the lubricity of fuel and engine performance to degrade. In this aspect, biodiesel fuel derived from rice bran is applied to compensate viscosity lost in the desulfurization treatment. This research is focused on the performance of an 11,000cc diesel engine and the emission characteristics by the introduction of ULSD(Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel), BD20(Diesel 80%+Biodiesel 20%) and a diesel oxidation catalyst, where BD20 is used to improve the lubricity of fuel in fuel injection systems as fuel additives or alternative fuels.

The most desirable diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) should have the properties of oxidizing CO, HC and SOF effectively at low exhaust gas temperature while minimizing the formation of sulfate at high exhaust gas temperature. Precious metals such as platinum and palladium have been known to be sufficiently active for oxidizing SOF and also to have high activity for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide $(SO_2)$ to sulfur trioxide $(SO_3)$. There is a need to develop a highly selective catalyst which can promote the oxidation SOF efficiently, on the other hand, suppress the oxidation of $SO_2$. In this study, a Pt-V catalyst was prepared by impregnating platinum and vanadium onto a Ti-Si wash coated ceramic monolith substrate. A prepared Pt-V catalytic converter was installed on a heavy duty diesel engine and the effect of fuel sulfur on particulate matter (PM) of heavy duty diesel engine was measured. The effect of fuel sulfur on PM of Pt-V was also compared with that of a commercialized Pt catalyst currently being used in some of the heavy duty diesel engines in advanced countries. Only 1 $\sim$ 3% of sulfur in the diesel fuel was converted to sulfate in PM for the engine without catalyst, but almost 100% of sulfur conversion was achieved for the engine with Pt catalyst at maximum loading condition. In the case of Pt-V catalyst, there was no big difference in conversion with the base engine even at maximum loading condition. The reason of SOF increase according to the increase of suflate emission was identified as the washing off effect of bound water in sulfate.

To comply with stringent exhaust emission standards, it is necessary to reserch on some better quality of automotive fuels. Sulfur in fuels is sulfur compound by DOC and then it caused to the increase of PM on the surface of the catalyst. This research is focused on diesel emission characteristics and poisoning effect on Diesel Oxidation Catalyst when Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel(ULSD) and biodiesel are applied simultaneously. The biodiesel is used to improve viscosity of fuel specially in fuel injection system of engine since the introduction of ULSD may degrade viscosity in the process of desulfurization. Furthermore, this study may provide some basic data for the design of emissions reduction technology.

The diesel vehicle is relatively superior to gasoline vehicle on the fuel consumption, durability and combustion efficiency. However, exhaust emission from diesel vehicle are known to be harmful to human health and environment. The treatment technologies for the diesel exhaust gases are classified as replacement of fuel, quality control of diesel fuel, improvement of engine and aftertreatment system. The most effective for the treatment technology is known to be aftertreatment system, and this research is continuously conducted by many groups. The DOC system has many advantages of reducing particulates and harmful gaseous substances such as CO. HC. Moreover, it is simple in device structure, relatively low cost, and easy to install witout retrofitting the vehicle. In this study, experiment were conducted to analyze the effects on factors of oxidation characteristics and conversion efficiency of DOC. In experiment, test was conducted to estimate engine emission in 11,000cc diesel engine which was equipped with DOC.
