An Experimental Study on the Clutch Type Water Pump of Diesel Passenger Vehicle for Reducing Fuel Consumption and CO2 Emission (연비 개선 및 CO2 저감을 위한 승용디젤 차량의 클러치타입 워터펌프 적용에 따른 실험적 연구)

  • A typical cooling system of an engine relies on a water pump that circulates the coolant through the system. The pump is typically driven by the crankshaft through a mechanical link with engine starting. In order to reduce the friction and warm-up time of an engine, the clutch-type water pump (CWP) was applied in 2.0 liter diesel vehicle. The clutch-type water pump can force cooling water to supply into an engine by the operation of an electromagnetic clutch equipped as the inner part of pump system. The onset of CWP is decided by temperature of cooling water and engine oil. And, the control logic for an optimal operation of the clutch-type water pump was developed and applied in engine and vehicle tests. In this study, the warm-up time was measured with the conventional water pump and clutch-type water pump in engine tests. And the emission and the fuel consumption were evaluated under NEDC mode in vehicle tests. Also, tests were carried out for the various temperature conditions starting the operation of CWP. From the results of the study, the application of CWP can improve the fuel consumption and $CO_2$ reduction by about 3%.

A Study on the Effects of Intake Port Geometry on In-Cylinder Swirl Flow Field in a Small D.I. Diesel Engine (직접분사식 소형 디젤엔진의 실린더내 스월 유동장에 미치는 흡기포트의 형상에 관한 연구)

  • This paper studies the effects of intake port configuration on the swirl that is key parameter in the flow field of direct injection diesel engines. In-cylinder flow characteristics is known to have significant effects on fuel air mixing, combustion and emissions. To investigate the swirl flow generated by various intake ports, steady state flow tests were conducted to evaluate the swirl. Helical port geometry, SCV shape and bypass were selected as the design parameters to increase the swirl flow and parametric study was performed to choose the optimal port shape that would generate a high swirl ratio efficiently. The results revealed that a key factor in generating a high swirl ratio was to suitably control the direction of the intake air flow passing through the valve seat. For these purposes, we changed the distance of helical and tangential port as well as installed bypass near the valve seat and the effects of intake port geometry on in-cylinder flow field were visualized by a laser sheet visualization method. From the experimental results, we found that the swirl ratio and mass flow rate had a trade off relation. In addition, the result indicates that the bypass is a effective method to increase the swirl ratio without sacrificing mass flow rate.

An Experimental Study on the Two Stage Ignition of Cool Flame and Hot Flame in HCCI Engine According to Fuel Composition (연료조성에 따른 HCCI 엔진의 냉염 및 열염의 2단연소 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • As the environmental pollution becomes serious global problem, the regulation of emission exhausted from automobiles is strengthened. Therefore, it is very important to know how to reduce the NOx and PM simultaneously in diesel engines, which has lot of merits such as high thermal efficiency, low fuel consumption and durability. By this reason, the new concept called as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) engines are spotlighted because this concept reduced NOx and P.M. simultaneously. However, it is well known that HCCI engines increased HC and CO. Thus, the investigation of combustion characteristics which consists cool and hot flames for HCCI engines were needed to obtain the optimal combustion condition. In this study, combustion characteristics for direct injection type HCCI engine such as quantity of cool flame and hot flame, ignition timing and ignition delay were investigated to clarify the effects of these parameters on performance. The results revealed that diesel combustion showed the two-stage ignition of cool flame and hot flame, the rate of cool flame increase and hot flame decrease with increasing intake air temperature. On the other hand, the gasoline combustion is the single-stage ignition and ignition timing is near the TDC. In addition mixed fuel combustion showed different phenomenon, which depends on the ratio of gasoline component. Ignition timing of mixed fuel is retarded near the TDC and the ignition delay is increased according to ratio of gasoline.

Energy efficiency improvements in part load for a marine auxiliary diesel engine (선박발전기용 디젤엔진의 부분부하에서 에너지 효율 개선에 관한연구)

  • The reduction of CO2 emission has been discussed in the Marine Environment Protection committee in the International Maritime Organization as the biggest causes of GHG for the purpose of indexing CO2 amounts released into the atmosphere from ships. Accordingly, various methods including the change in the hull design to improve energy efficiency, the coating development to reduce friction resistances, the additives development for improving thermal efficiency in an engine, the low-speed operation to reduce fuel consumptions, and etc. have been applied. The main engine of a ship is an electronic engine for improving the efficiency of the whole load area. However, marine generator engines still use mechanical drive engines in intake, exhaust, and fuel injection valve drive cams. In addition, most of marine generator engines in ships apply a part-load operation of less then 80% due to an overload protection system. Therefore, marine auxiliary diesel engine set at 100% load is necessary to readjust in order to efficient operation because of part-load operation. The objective of this study is to report the results of the part-load fuel consumption improvement by injection timing readjust to identifying the operational characteristics of a marine generator engine currently operated in a ship.

  • 초음파를 이용하여 액체 연료를 분사하면 균일한 입경과 미립화가 우수하며 에너지 절약과 공해방지등을 할 수 있다. 또한 유속과 유량에 관계없이 이용할 수 있어 반도체 분야의 웨이퍼와 평판 표시기상에 사진 석판용 화학물질의 균일도포 컴퓨터 하드 디스크의 광택제 도포등에 사용할 수 있다. 이처럼 초저의 유출 용량을 요구하는 모든 공정 및 액체연료의 분사가 요구되는 모든 산업에 적용할 수 있는 장점을 가지고 있다. 하지만 현제까지 주로 사용되고 있는 초음파노즐의 액츄에이터는 단판액츄에이터형로 높은 교류전압을 인가해주어야 하는 단점을 가지고 있다. 이 단점을 해결하기 위해 적층액츄에이터형을 사용하여 초음파 노즐 구동하면 낮은 교류 입력전압에서도 단판액츄에이터형 초음파 노즐과 같은 특성을 가질 수 있다. 또한 초음파 노즐의 구동시 기계적인 진동을 이용하므로 많은 열을 발생시켜 노즐의 온도가 상승하여 세라믹 액츄에이터에도 그 영향을 미치게 되어 열적 열화 현상이 일어날 수 있기에 높은 큐리온도를 가지는 액츄에이터가 필요하다. 본 실험에서는 $Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.02}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.12}(Zr_{0.50}Ti_{0.50})_{0.86}O_3$ 조성을 사용하여 $900^{\circ}C$의 저온에서 액상 소결하여 적층혈액츄에이터를 제작하였으며 압전 및 유전 특성을 조사하였다. 제작된 초음파노즐을 구동하기 위해서는 약 36kHz의 30V이상의 교류입력전압 할 수 있는 구동회로가 필요로 한다. 압전액츄에이터의 구동을 위해서는 정확한 정현파 입력이 필요 없다. 압전액츄에이터의 특성상 유사 정현파 입력 만으로도 임피던스 매칭이 이루어지기 때문에 설계가 쉽고 간편한 Push-Pull 방식을 이용한 PWM인버터를 사용하였고 인버터의 출력 주파수를 34~38kHz까지 가변 할 수 있게 설계하였다. 제작된 적층액츄에이터형 초음파 노즐을 PWM인버터로 실제 액체 연료인 경유를 분사하였을 때의 액츄에이터의 온도 변화에 따른 공진주파수와 온도 의존성, 전기적 특성을 조사하고 미립화 분사되는 경유의 미립자 크기 및 최대 분사량을 조사 하였다.

Effect of Intake Pressure on Emissions and Performance in Low Temperature Combustion Operation of a Diesel Engine (디젤 저온연소 운전 영역에서 흡기압이 엔진 성능에 주는 영향)

  • One of the effective ways to reduce both $NO_x$ and PM at the same time in a diesel CI engine is to operate the engine in low temperature combustion (LTC) regimes. In general, two strategies are used to realize the LTC operation-dilution controlled LTC and late injection LTC - and in this study, the former approach was used. In the dilution controlled regime, LTC is achieved by supplying a large amount of EGR to the cylinder. The significant EGR gas increases the heat capacity of in-cylinder charge mixture while decreasing oxygen concentration of the charge, activating low temperature oxidation reaction and lowering PM and $NO_x$ emissions. However, use of high EGR levels also deteriorates combustion efficiency and engine power output. Therefore, it is widely considered to use increased intake pressure as a way to resolve this issue. In this study, the effects of intake pressure variations on performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder diesel engine operated in LTC regimes were examined. LTC operation was achieved in less than 8% $O_2$ concentration and thus a simultaneous reduction of both PM and $NO_x$ emission was confirmed. As intake pressure increased, combustion efficiency was improved so that THC and CO emissions were decreased. A shift of the peak Soot location was also observed to lower $O_2$ concentration while $NO_x$ levels were kept nearly zero. In addition, an elevation of intake pressure enhanced engine power output as well as indicated thermal efficiency in LTC regimes. All these results suggested that LTC operation range can be extended and emissions can be further reduced by adjusting intake pressure.

The Effects of Diesel Exhaust Particulates and Particulate Matters on the ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 Expression in the Lung of Asthma-incuced Mouse (디젤분진 및 미세분진이 천식마우스의 폐조직에서 ICAM-1과 VCAM-1의 발현에 미치는 효과)

  • This research investigated whether exposure of diesel exhaust particulate (DEP) and particulate metter (PM) effect on intercellular. adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) expression in asthma-induced Balb/c and IL-10 knock out (KO) mouse. Mouse was sensitized with intraperitoneal injection with ovalbumin, followed by challenges with intranasal ovalbumin. After induction of asthma mouse placed in the inhalation chamber and exposed to DEP and PM (10 $mg/m^3$). The evidences of pulmonary inflammation were assessed by immunohistochemical stain and westen blot against ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in the lung tissue. In the immunohistochemical stain, positive reactions for ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were much stronger in asthma-induced groups and asthma-induced group with DEP or PM than control groups. Although mild positive reactions were appeared in asthma-induced IL-10 KO mice groups, positive reactions were very strong in the asthma-induced group with DEP or PM. In Western blot, expression of VCAM-1 was increased in asthma-induced group with DEP or PM than asthma-induced groups. In the IL-10 KO mouse, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 expression were increased in asthma-induced group with DEP or PM than asthma-induced groups. DEP and PM exposure have additive effects on the aggravation of inflammatory signs in the asthma-induced murine model. These results suggest that inhalation of DEP and PM in asthmatic patients may aggravate clinical symptoms.

Study of Improvement in Fatigue Life of Fuel Injection Pipe of Common Rail System (커먼레일 시스템 연료분사관의 피로수명 개선에 관한 연구)

  • The fuel injection pipe of a common rail system used in a clean diesel vehicle plays a role in supplying fuel from a rail to the injector of each cylinder connecting the engine under a repeated internal pressure. The fuel injection pressure is increased to over 200 MPa for satisfying EU emission standards and improving fuel efficiency, and a heading process and an autofrettage process are required for preventing folding defects and improving fatigue life. In this study, the flow stress and SN data of the material of the pipe are obtained through a tensile test and a fatigue test. The heading process for checking the folding defects of pipe ends is performed by using FEA. Furthermore, the optimal design of the autofrettage process for improving fatigue life considering not only the compressive residual stresses of the inner surface but also the tensile residual stresses of the outer surfaces of the pipe under the repeated internal pressure is performed by using FEA. To verify the process design, fatigue analysis for the autofrettaged pipe is performed.

Development of Map-Based Engine Control Logic for DME Fuel (MAP 기반 DME용 엔진 제어로직 개발)

  • This paper presents the verified results from the examination of the control algorithm, logic composition, and vehicle condition of the engine that has been adapted for DME fuel. It introduces the development process of the control structure and the logic control based on control map and auto-code generation, and finally verifies the reliability and performance of the overall control. The control structure largely consists of the injection control part that implements driver demand into an engine net torque and the air control system part that satisfies characteristics of exhaust gas and power performance. The control logic is designed with feedforward and feedback control for each of its control functions for an enhanced response. Moreover, the control map of the feedforward controller is created by the use of an engine model created by test data of mass product diesel engine, and it was subsequently calibrated in the test process of the engine and vehicle state. A test mode was completed by attaching the developed controller to the vehicle, and a reduction in gas emission is confirmed by the calibration of EGR, VGT, and injection times.

Research and Development of a 2.9 Liter Light-duty DME Truck Using Common Rail Fuel Injection Systems (커먼레일 연료분사 시스템을 장착한 2.9 리터급 경량 DME 트럭의 연구 및 개발)

  • In this study, the trucks(2.9-liter) have been developed to use DME as fuel, and performance test of the vehicle's DME engine, power, emissions, fuel economy and vehicle aspects was conducted. For experiments, the fuel system(common-rail injectors and high-pressure pump included) and the engine control logic was developed, and ECU mapping was performed. As a result, the rail pressure from 40MPa to approximately 65% increase compared to the base injector has been confirmed that. Also, the pump discharge flow is 15.5 kg/h when the fuel rail pressure is 400rpm(40MPa), and the pump discharge flow is 92.1 kg/h when the fuel rail pressure is 2,000rpm(40MPa). The maximum value of full-load torque capability is 25.5 kgfm(based on 2,000 rpm), and more than 90% compared to the level of the diesel engine were obtained. The DME vehicle was developed in this study, 120 km/h can drive to the stable, and calculated in accordance with the carbon-balance method of fuel consumptions is 5.7 km/L.
