This experimental study was executed to obtain basic data for actual engine operation using radical induced ignition method (RI) which can achieve emission reduction and high efficiency due to the rapid bulk combustion. In this study, a direct injection diesel engine was converted into SI type engine with a sparkplug. The modified SI type engine can be divided into two classes. One is the SI engine with a sparkplug only at the cylinder head, and the other is the SI engine with the sparkplug which is enveloped in a sub-chamber. Also, a basic experimental was conducted in order to investigate combustion mechanism of radical induced injection before the experiment execution for actual engine using the modified SI engine. The bulk combustion phenomenon of radical induced ignition method was analyzed from the basic experiment by using a constant volume chamber. Volume value of sub-chamber used in this experiment is approximately $0.2\%$ of one of the main combustion chamber. In this paper, combustion characteristics using radical induced injection method was compared with that of using spark ignition method according to change in the engine speed and equivalence ratio. As a result, in the case of the radical induced injection engine, the combustion duration and cycle variation were respectively reduced ranged from $\Phi$(equivalence ratio)=0.8 (lean mixture ratio) to $\Phi$=1.0 (stoichiometric ratio).
This study was carried out to determine an optimal lean $NO_x$ trap (LNT) regeneration condition based on a $NO_x$ storage fraction. The LNT regeneration was performed by an in-cylinder post fuel injection method. A $NO_x$ storage fraction is defined by the ratio of current cumulated $NO_x$ amount in the LNT to the $NO_x$ storage capacity: 0 means empty and 1 fully loaded. In this study five engine operating conditions were chosen to represent the New European Driving Cycle. With various $NO_x$ storage fractions each engine operating condition, the LNT regeneration was executed and then $NO_x$ conversion efficiency, additional fuel consumption, CO and THC slip, peak catalyst temperature were measured. The results showed that there exist an optimal condition to regenerate the LNT, eg. 1500 rpm 6 bar BMEP with below 0.7 $NO_x$ storage fraction in this experimental constraint.
The RI gasoline engine haying a sub-chamber had a high cycle variation due to the difficulty of the residual gas scavenge in the sub-chamber. To solve this problem and improve the combustion performance of RI engine, we devised a method to inject directly CNG fuel into the sub-chamber. A DI diesel engine of single cylinder was converted into a RI-CNG engine and an electronic control unit for the engine was manufactured. In this study, the combustion characteristics of the RI-CNG engine were investigated with the injection timings and air excess ratios at the load conditions of 50% throttle open rate and 1700rpm. As the results from this study, the RI-CNG engine worked reliably under the condition of the ignitable lean limit of $\lambda=1.7$ by showing the $COV_{imep}$ below about 5%. And the highest thermal efficiency could be obtained in the injection timing that produced the high imep and the low $COV_{imep}$ at the same time. The CO emission concentration indicated very low values and the THC and $NO_x$ showed an opposite pattern. With a view to improving the thermal efficiency and reducing the harmful emissions, the proper control region of the ignition timing and the mixture ratio were nearly ATDC $20^{\circ}\sim50^{\circ}$ and $\lambda=1.4$ respectively.
The electric controlled marine diesel engine has fuel pump generating the high pressurized fuel for fuel injection to combustion chamber via a common rail. Fuel pump consists of a cam-roller system. Journal bearing installed between a roller and a cam-roller pin is subjected to fluctuating heavy and instant loads by cam lift. First, Kinematic analysis is carried out to predict bearing loads during one cycle acting on the journal bearing. Second, flexible multi-body dynamic analysis and transient elasto-hydrodynamic(EHD) lubrication analysis for journal bearing considering elastic deformation of cam-roller pin, roller and bearing are conducted using AVL EXCITE/PU software to predict lubrication performance. The clearance ratio and journal groove shape providing lubrication oil are important parameter in bearing design having good performance and can be changed easier than other design parameters such as diameter, width, oil supply pressure and bearing material grade. Generally, journal bearing performance is represented by the minimum oil film thickness(MOFT) and peak oil film pressure(POFP). As well as the traditional design parameters(MOFT, POFP), in this study, temperature rise of lubrication oil is also evaluated through the side leakage flow of supplied oil. By the evaluating MOFT, POFP and temperature rise, the optimum bearing clearance ratio is decided.
Oil spill caused severe effects on the marine fauna and flora due to direct contact of organisms with the oil and even in regions not directly affected by the spill. This study was conducted to understand the effects of the oil spill accidents and the use of dispersant on the red tide of Cochlodinium polykrikoides. Crude oil produced in Kuwait, bunker-C, kerosene and diesel oil, and a chemical dispersant produced in Korea, were added with a series of 10 ppb to 100 ppm in the f/2-Si medium at $20^{\circ}C$ under a photon flux from cool white fluorescent tubes of $100\;mol\;m^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ in a 14: 10 h L:D cycle for the culture of C. polykrikoides. In low concentrations of ${\leq}$ 1 ppm of examined oils no impact on the growth of C. polykrikoides was recorded, while in high concentration of ${\geq}$ 10 ppm, cell density was significantly decreased with the range of 10 to 80% in comparison with the control. The growth of C. polykrikoides after the addition of the dispersant and the mixtures combined with oils and a dispersant of ${\geq}$ 10 ppm appeared to decrease, whereas the growth of C. polykrikoides exposed to ${\leq}$ 100 ppb showed little serious impact. However, almost all the C. polykrikoides cells were died regardless of a dispersant and combined mixtures within a few days after the addition of high concentrations.
As the interest on the air pollution is gradually risen up at home and abroad, their vehicle emission regulations have been reinforcing by steps. PM regulation was also reinforced 4times for the last 13years and has been applied to SI vehicles after EURO 5. Additionally, knowing that small particles of PM can easily penetrate deep into lungs PM number was added on the regulation from EURO5+ and is applied to CI vehicles. Also, PN regulation is going to be applied to SI vehicles. But, because the regulation is appled to only a general test mode of each countries that is performed at $25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$, it is unclear whether the regulation can work on the other ambient temperature conditions or not. In this paper, to know that exhaust emission characteristics at the special conditions CI vehicles(CRDi w, w/o DPF) were tested using 5-cycle mode, NEDC mode at 5-ambient temperatures (35, 25, 0, -7 and -15) and the exhaust emission test results were discussed. The results show that the vehicle with DPF emits much low PM(and PM number) on all of the test mode. However, NOx of the other mode was emitted higher than regulation mode. Also. NOx was sharply increased according to decreasing Ambient Temperature.
The objective of this research is to investigate the impact of engine oil aging on PM(Particulate Matter), exhaust gases, and DPF. It is widely known that the specification of a lubricant and its consumption in an ICE considerably influences the release of regulated harmful emissions under normal engine operating conditions. Considering DPF clogging phenomena associated with lubricant-derived soot/ash components, a simulated aging mode is designed for DPF to facilitate engine dynamometer testing. A PM/ash accumulation cycle is developed by considering real-world engine operating conditions for the increment of engine oil consumption and natural DPF regeneration for ash accumulation. The test duration for DPF aging is approximately 300 h with high- and low-SAPs engine oils. Detailed engine lubricant properties of new and aged oils are analyzed to evaluate the effect of engine oil degradation on vehicle mileage. Furthermore, physical and chemical analyses are performed using X-CT, ICP, and TGA/DSC to quantify the engine oil contribution on the PM composition. This is achieved by sampling with various filters using specially designed PM sampling equipment. Using high SAPs engine oil causes more PM/ash accumulation compared with low SAPs engine oils and this could accelerate fouling of the EGR in the engine, which results in an increase in harmful exhaust gas emissions. These test results on engine lubricants under operating conditions will assist in the establishment of regulated and unregulated toxic emissions policies and lubricant quality standards.
The UPS(Uninterruptible Power Supply) system operates in the battery charging mode when the grid is normal, and in the UPS mode, which is the battery discharge mode when a grid error occurs. Since the UPS must supply the same voltage as the grid to the load within 4 [ms] in case of a grid error, the switching time and power recovery time should be short when controlling the output voltage and current of the UPS, and the power failure detection time is also important. The power outage detection algorithm using DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) proposed in this paper compares the grid voltage waveform with the voltage waveform including the 9th harmonic generated through DFT using Schmitt trigger to detect power outage faster than the existing power outage monitoring algorithm. There are advantages. Therefore, it is possible to supply instant and stable power when switching modes in the UPS system. The multi-power-applied UPS system proposed in this paper uses DFT, which is faster than the conventional blackout monitoring algorithm in detecting power failure, to provide stable power to the load in a shorter time than the existing power outage monitoring algorithm when a system error occurs. The detection method was applied. The changeover time of mode switching was set to less than 4 [ms], which is 1/4 of the system cycle, in accordance with KSC 4310 regulation, which was established by the Industrial Standards Council on the regulation of uninterruptible power supply. A 10 [kW] UPS system in which commercial voltage, vehicle generator, and auxiliary diesel generator can be connected to each of the proposed transfer devices was constructed and the feasibility was verified by conducting an experiment.
The wear on engine valve and seat insert is one of the most important factors affecting engine performance. The engine valve and seat insert must be able to withstand the severe environment that is created by: high temperature exhaust gases generated while the engine is running, rapid movement of the valve spring, high pressure generated in the explosive process. In order to study such problems, a simulator has been developed to generate and control high temperatures and various speeds during motion. The wear simulator is considered to be a valid simulation of the engine valve and seat insert wear process with various speeds during engine activity. This work focused on the test of various degrees of wear on four different exhaust valve materials such as HRV40, HRV40-FNV (face nitrided valve), STL #32, STL #6,. Throughout all tests performed in this study, the outer surface temperature of the seat insert was controlled at $350^{\circ}C$, the cycle number was $4.0{\times}10^6$, the test load was 6860 N, the fuel was LPG the test speed was 20 Hz (2400 RPM) and the seat insert material was HVS1-2. The mean (standard deviation) maximum roughness of the exhaust valve and seat insert was $25.44\;(3.16)\;{\mu}m$ and $27.53\;(3.60)\;{\mu}m$ at the HRV40, $21.58\;(2.38)\;{\mu}m$ and $25.94\;(3.07)\;{\mu}m$ at the HRV40-FNV, $36.73\;(8.98)\;{\mu}m$ and $61.38\;(7.84)\;{\mu}m$ at the STL #32, $73.64\;(23.80)\;{\mu}m$ and $60.80\;(13.49)\;{\mu}m$ at the STL #6, respectively. It was discovered that the maximum roughness of exhaust valve was lower as the high temperature hardness of the valve material was higher under the same test conditions such as temperature, test speed, cycle number, test load and seat insert material. The set of the HRV40-FNV exhaust valve and the HVS1-2 seat insert showed the best wear resistance.
