A manufacturing technology of carbon fiber composites with thermoplastic polymer pellets and continuous woven fiber was investigated using a compression molding process. To secure the impregnation of resin into the porosity of fabric the composite specimens were prepared with general injection-molding grade polypropylene pellets and low viscosity polycarbonate pellets. Tensile tests of polypropylene and polycarbonate composites were performed. Polycarbonate composites showed higher fracture strength than that of polypropylene composites because of the difference of matrix properties. However, the increase rate of strength was lower than that of polypropylene composites due to the difference of coherence between matrix and reinforcement. To investigate the effect of carbon fiber volume fraction on the fracture strength variation polypropylene composites with different volume fraction were compression molded and tensile tests were performed together. It was shown that the fracture strength of the polypropylene composites increased by 3.2, 5.4 and 6.9 times with the increase of carbon fabric volume fraction of 0.256, 0.367, and 0.480, respectively.
Direct energy deposition (DED) is an additive manufacturing technique that involves the melting of metal powder with a high-powered laser beam and is used to build a variety of components. In recent year, it can be widely used in order to produce hard, wear resistant and/or corrosion resistant surface layers of metallic mechanical parts, such as dies and molds. For the purpose of the hardfacing to achieve high wear resistance and hardness, application of high speed steel (HSS) can be expected to improve the tool life. During the DED process using the high-carbon steel, however, defects (delamination or cracking) can be induced by rapid solidification of the molten powder. Thus, substrate preheating is generally adopted to reduce the deposition defect. While the substrate preheating ensures defect-free deposition, it is important to select the optimal preheating temperature since it also affects the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties. In this study, AISI M4 powder was deposited on the AISI 1045 substrate preheated at different temperatures (room temperature to $500^{\circ}C$). In addition, the micro-hardness distribution, cooling rates, and microstructures of the deposited layers were investigated in order to observe the influence of the substrate preheating on the mechanical and metallurgical properties.
In this study, elastoplastic finite element analysis with multi-body treatment was used to elucidate the mechanical phenomena occurring from pre-stressing of die-system. A finite element analysis model with detailed conditions is proposed. The effects of die pre-stressing slope on the circumferential components of the pre-stressed die inserts were evaluated. The role of tight fitting between the supporter and die case was also emphasized because it has a significant effect on the undesirable change in the target slope of machined inner surface of the die case around the die insert. The two mechanical problems include the one between die-insert and die case and the other between supporter and die case, and their correlation is minimized to establish the optimum design in the die structural design stage because it cannot be quantitatively controlled owing to various factors affecting the die structural behavior during die pre-stressing.
This paper describes a research work of developing a computer-aided design of product with bending constraints and piercing for progressive working. an approach to the CAD system is based on the knowledge-based rules. Knowledge for the CAD system is formulated from plasticity theories, experimental results and the empirical knowledge of field experts. The system has been written AutoLISP on the AutoCAD with a personal computer and is composed of four main modules, which are input and shape treatment, flat pattern layout, production feasibility check, and strip-layout module. Based on knowledge-based rules, the system is designed by considering several factors, such as radius and angle of bend, material and thickness of product, complexities of blank geometry and punch profile, bending sequence, availability of press. Strip layout drawing generated by piercing with punch profiles divide into automatically for external area is shown into graphic forms, including bending sequences for the product with piercing and bending constraints. Results obtained using the modules enable the designer and manufacturer of piercing and bending dies to be more efficient in this field.
In this study a 3-D automatic die design supporting system for a bonnet panel has been developed using Pro/ROGRAM of the widespread CAD software Pro/ENGINEER A standard drawing die was defined in terms of the punch profile, the die face geometry, and the blank sheet size. The strip layout of a trimming die was defined, in addition, in terms of the trimming line and the locations of scrap cutters. Necessary relations for each design step are formulated and rules for bottom-up type 3-D die design were set up for the automatic design of drawing and trimming dies of a bonnet. With the input geometric data of punch profile, die face, and blank sheet, this 3-D design supporting system could complete the basic design process, in case of the bonnet drawing die, in a time 78% shorter than that required by a typical 2-D CAD system. The new design system showed remarkable design efficiency also when it was applied to the case of redesign and modification of the previous standard output for a different car type.
For investigating rubber pad sheet metal forming process, the rubber pad deformation characteristics as well as the contact problem of rubber pad-sheet metal has been analyzed. In this paper, the behavior of the rubber deformation is represented by hyper-elastic constitutive relations based on a generalized Mooney-Rivlin model. Finite element procedures for the two-dimensional responses, employing total Lagrangian formulations are implemented in an implicit form. The volumetric incompressibility condition of the rubber deformation is included in the formulation by using penalty method. The sheet metal is characterized by elasto-plastic material with strain hardening effect and analyzed by a commercial code. The contact procedure and interface program between rubber pad and sheet metal are implemented. Inflation experiment of circular rubber pad identifies the behaviour of the rubber pad deformation during the process. The various form dies and scaled down apparatus of the rubber-pad forming process are fabricated for simulating realistic forming process. The obtaining experimental data and FEM solutions were compared. The numerical solutions illustrate fair agreement with experimental results. The forming pressure distribution according to the dimensions of sheet metal and rubber pads, various rubber models and rubber material are also compared and discussed.
This paper focuses on "The Story of $Bras-Coup{\acute{e}}$" in George Washington Cable's The Grandissimes (1880), a story to and around which Cable claimed the larger work was built. It tells of an African candio sold into slavery who, to the dismay of his white purchasers, refuses to work, strikes his master, and runs away to lead a life of a fugitive in the swamps. He is finally captured, whipped, and maimed, but not before he casts a powerful voodoo curse at his master and his plantation. He dies a heroic death, with the last words that he goes "To--Africa." Cable once said that he "meant The Grandissimes as truly a political work as it ever has been called." It is a political work in that $Bras-Coup{\acute{e}}^{\prime}s$ personal rebellion is associated with much-feared slave revolts, especially the black revolution in San Domingue/Haiti. There is also $Honor{\acute{e}}$ f.m.c. (free man of color), one of the narrators of "The Story of $Bras-Coup{\acute{e}}$" and a stand-in for the Freedmen in the postbellum United States, who nurses his own insurrectionary flame. Through these figures Cable makes a "terrible suggestion" that a black revolution is on the horizon unless whites would not mend their ways soon.
An ultrafine grained Mg-9Al-1Zn magnesium alloy with the mean grain size less than $1{\mu}m$ was produced by using high-ratio differential speed rolling. The processed alloy exhibited excellent superplasticity at relatively low temperatures. The micro-forming tests were carried out using a micro-forging apparatus with micro V-grooved shaped dies made of silicon and the micro-formability was evaluated by means of micro-formability index, $R_f$ ($=A_f/A_g$, $A_f$: formed and inflowed area into the V-groove, $A_g$: area of the V-groove). The $R_f$ value increased with temperature up to $280^{\circ}C$ and then decreased beyond $300^{\circ}C$. The decrease of the $R_f$ value at $300^{\circ}C$ was attributed to the accelerated grain coarsening. Increasing the micro-forging pressure increased the $R_f$ values. At a given die geometry, die filling ability decreased as the die position moved away from the die center to the end. FEM simulation predicted this behavior and a method of improving this problem was proposed.
Forged and flat-bar rolled STD11 tool steel shows anisotropic dimensional change during heat treatment. The dimensional change in the rolling direction is larger than that in the transverse direction. The cause of the anisotropic dimensional change is that the steel is anisotropic in composition, microstructure and other properties. The decrease of anisotropic distortion in tool steel is important for making better precision cold working dies. In this study, the effect of ingot weight and hot rolling reduction ratio on the anisotropic dimensional change of STD11 during heat treatment has been studied. Dimensional change was evaluated by simulating a real heat treatment process, including gas quenching and tempering. Experimental results showed that all the rolled flat-bar products had anisotropic distortion to some degree, but the anisotropic distortion was reduced as hot rolling ratio increased. Ingot weight had a little effect on anisotropic distortion. Microstructural observation showed that the anisotropic dimensional change of STD11 tool steel was closely related to the amount, shape and distribution of coarse carbides.
Increasing needs for light weight and high safety in modern automobiles induced the wide application of high strength steels in automotive body structures- The main difficulty in the forming of sheet metal parts with high strength steel is the large amount of springback including sidewall curl and twist in channel shaped member parts- Among these shape defects, twist occurs frequently and requires numerous reworks on the dies to compensate the shape deviation- But until now, it seems to be no effective method to reduce the twist in the forming processes- In this study, a new forming process to reduce the twist deformation during the forming of automotive structural member was suggested- This method consists of forming and restriking of embosses on the sidewall around the stretch flanging area of the part- and was applied in the forming process design of an automotive front side inner member with high strength steel- To evaluate the effectiveness of the method, springback analysis using $Pamstampa^{tm}$ was done- Through the analysis results, the suggested method was proven to be effective in twist reduction of channel shaped parts with stretch flanging area.
