It was investigated that two rods of aluminum can be welded by hot extru-pressure welding method with stepped welding dies, and that the welding pressure and metal flow on the welding surface were analyzed by computer simulation according to the stepped shapes of welding dies. It was known by computer simulation that welding pressure on the welding section of rods welded using stepped welding dies could be higher than the welding pressure of aluminum rods without using stepped welding die. And it was known by experiments that two rods of aluminum can be welded on the end sections by hot extru-pressure welding method using stepped welding dies without relative rotational movement of contacted aluminum rods in the case of friction welding of rods.
In dies manufacturing industry, quality, cost, and production leadtime are very important. In this study, we describe the current status and characteristics of dies industry in Korea. AS a case study, we introduce a CIM system implemented in a leading dies manufacturer and describe its components and functions. Subsequently, we analyze the effectiveness of the CIM system by using the real data between 1987 and 1992 from the company. It is indicated that the most significant impact of CIM is the reduced cost, followed by increased sales, reduced leadtime, and improved quality of dies. All these four variables show positive correlations with one another. However, the data indicate that the number of employees are not directly related with other variables : probably because additional personnel are required for operating new technology such as CAD/CAM and information network.
A micro-injection mold for ultra-thin-walled plate was considered in this work. The proposed mold system is for the fabrication of ultra-thin walled plastic plate with micro features by injection molding. As the injection molding of thin-walled plastic, which has the thickness under $400{\mu}m$, itself is not easy, the injection molding of the micro-features in the thin-walled structure is more complicated and difficult. To investigate the basic phenomenon of the ultra-thin walled part during the injection molding process, design of the part and mold system were performed in the present study. The injection molding and structural analysis of the suggested part and mold system were also performed. Consequently, injection molding system for ultra-thin walled plate with micro features were manufactured and presented.

The design for cold extrusion dies is very important, because the die insert is subjected to very high radial and hoop stresses. The design of cold extrusion dies has many constrained conditions. In this paper, the used assumptions are such that the yield strength of each ring is selected according to the allowable tensile or compressive hoop stress in each ring and the maximum allowable inner pressure, when yielding occurs in one ring of the dies, is obtained by the proposed equation. In order to obtain design variables, such as diameter ratios and interferences, using the maximum inner pressure, the flexible tolerance method was used for shrink-fitted thick-walled cylinders. ANSYS APDL was used to perform the repeated analysis of deformation of the dies due to the variation of the design variables. The response surface methodology is utilized to analyze the relationship between the design variables and the maximum radial displacement of the die insert during extrusion. From the results, it is found that outer diameter of the die Insert has the largest effect on the minimization of maximum radial displacement at the inner surface of the dies.

A split-die design for the cold forging of symmetric parts such as those having a hexagonal cross-section is presented in this paper. Parts with a hexagonal cross-section, such as bolt heads and nuts, should be forged with a die that has a hexagonal-shaped hole. A split type die is required to mitigate the buildup of stress concentrations located at the corners of the hexagonal hole. Generally, the insert of a hexagonal die is made by cutting each corner of a cylinder using a hexagonal hole and then combined with the die and shrink-fitted. However, split dies face problems when extruding material at the corners of the hexagonal split die. To address this problem, two types of split dies were evaluated: rounded hexagonal dies and angular hexagonal dies. The effects of the pre-stress ring on the dies were compared and analyzed and results show that using the angular split hexagonal die can extend the lifetime of forging dies.

The objective of this research works is to develop back panel dies of PDP TV with a large size. In order to design the geometry of the dies and an initial size of blank optimally, the finite element analysis has been carried out using AUTOFORM V4.2. The conner radius of the upper trimming area and the distance from the outer line of the blank holder to the outer line of the blank have been selected as design parameters to remove the wrinkling of the trimming area. The results of the analyses have been shown that a feasible product without wrinkles and skid lines can be obtained when the conner radius ranges from 6mm to 8mm and the distance lines in the range of 40-60mm. From the proposed design of the dies and an initial blank size, the final die set of the back panel has been successfully manufactured.

PURPOSE. To evaluate the reproducibility of scan-based abutments using a blue light model scanner. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A wax cast abutment die was fabricated, and a silicone impression was prepared using a silicone material. Nine study dies were constructed using the prepared duplicable silicone, and the first was used as a reference. These dies were classified into three groups and scanned using a blue light model scanner. The first three-dimensional (3D) data set was obtained by scanning eight dies separately in the first group. The second 3D data set was acquired when four dies were placed together in the scanner and scanned twice in the second group. Finally, the third 3D data set was obtained when eight dies were placed together in the scanner and scanned once. These data were then used to define the data value using third-dimension software. All the data were then analyzed using the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis H test (${\alpha}=.05$) and the post-hoc Mann-Whitney U-test with Bonferroni's correction (${\alpha}=.017$). RESULTS. The means and standard deviations of the eight dies together were larger than those of the four dies together and of the individual die. Moreover, significant differences were observed among the three groups (P<.05). CONCLUSION. With larger numbers of abutments scanned together, the scan becomes more inaccurate and loses reproducibility. Therefore, scans of smaller numbers of abutments are recommended to ensure better results.
It was studied that two plates of aluminum can be welded by extru-riveting experiments with extru-rivet welding dies, and that the welding strength and metal flow on the welding section were analyzed by computer simulation according to the welding variable such as the diameter of extrusion insert dies. It was known by computer simulation that welding strength on the welding section of plates could be influenced by the diameter of extrusion insert dies. And it was known by experiments that two plates of aluminum can be welded on a spot point on aluminum plate by extru-rivet welding process, and that welding strength is higher and higher if the diameter of extrusion insert die is smaller and smaller, and that welding strength is the highest when diameter of extrusion insert dies is ${\emptyset}4.2$mm in the case that the diameter of rivet is 5 mm, when aluminum 5052 two plates with 1.5 mm thickness and one plate with 3mm thickness for rivet plate are used as welding material.

Reverse Engineering is a procedure where the results of engineering decisions in manufacturing is feedback to the design phase and the knowledge-base is generated from the process know-how to reduce the errors. Since it used to take lots of time and efforts to finalize the machining of dies out of the original CAD design especially for die spotting and try-outs, reverse engineering is important to improve the productivity and quality of the die manufacturing process. In this regard, we developed system to support reverse engineering in machining of stamping dies for auto-body production. They automatically generate the relevant MC programs for a CMM simply with the input of measuring points in CAD environments, and show the CAD model and the results of inspection simultaneously for the ease of comparison. They also help reduce the overall clearance between the lower and upper dies. Applying these systems to the machining process of stamping dies, we could improve the reliability of measuring and get the optimal compensation distance between the two dies. We also analyzed the expected benefits of the system in terms of savings in time and costs.
