We have studied the fringe field switching (FFS) mode with the positive dielectric anisotropy for the fast response time. The factors such as the physical properties of the LC, the cell gap, and the rubbing angle were critical for the fast response time of the FFS mode. The response time became 10 ms faster when the rotational viscosity of the new LC is 20 mPa.s lower than the conventional LC. When the cell gap changed from 3.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 3.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, it was possible to achieve the total response time and response times associated with grey-to-grey transitions under 16 ms. And the response times including grey-to-grey transitions become fast as the rubbing angle decreases.

$Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5}TiO_3$ (BNT) based ceramics are considered potential lead-free alternatives for $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$(PZT) based ceramics in various applications such as sensors, actuators and transducers. However, BNT-based ceramics have lower electromechanical performance as compared with PZT based ceramics. Therefore, in this work, lead-free bulk $0.99[(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_{0.935}Ba_{0.065}]_{(1-x)}La_xTiO_3-0.01SrZO_3$ (BNBTLax-SZ, with x = 0, 0.01, 0.02) ceramics were synthesized by a conventional solid state reaction The crystal structure, dielectric response, degree of diffuseness and electric-field-induced strain properties were investigated as a function of different La concentrations. All samples were crystallized into a single phase perovskite structure. The temperature dependent dielectric response of La-modified BNBT-SZ ceramics showed lower dielectric response and improved field-induced strain response. The field induced strain increased from 0.17%_for pure BNBT-SZ to 0.38 % for 1 mol.% La-modified BNBT-SZ ceramics at an applied electric field of 6 kV/mm. These results show that La-modified BNBT-SZ ceramic system is expected to be a new candidate material for lead-free electronic devices.
In this study a measurement equipment was designed and made for the nonlinear dielectric constants in dielectrics. The determining method of the nonlinear dielectric constants also was proposed. The measurement equipment was consisted of the wave generation part, the high voltage amplifier part, the measurement part and the data acquisition part. In this equipment the measurement control and the data processing could be conducted by computer. In order to determine the nonlinear dielectric constants alternating sign-wave electric fields are applied to dielectrics with different magnitude and the waves of the electric fields and the response from dielectrics are stored in computer memories. The harmonics of dielectric displacement are obtained by the Fourier transformation of these waves. The nonlinear dielectric constants are determined at the relatively low-field region. The experiment for PZT ceramic samples was done by the equipment and the determining method and as the result meaningful data were obtained.

We demonstrate that the finite rate of dielectric relaxation in liquid crystals which has been ignored previously causes profound effects in the fast dielectric reorientation of the director. The phenomenon is relevant for submillisecond switching of the director when the switching rate approaches the rate of dielectric relaxation through the reorientation of the molecular dipoles. A submillisecond switching ($15-400\;{\mu}s$ for an optical retardation shift $0.3-2.2\;{\mu}m$ in $10-15\;{\mu}m$ thick cells) is demonstrated for dual frequency nematic cells with high pretilt that maximizes the dielectric torque acting on the director. We propose the theory of dielectric response in which the electric displacement depends not only on the present (as in the standard theory) but also on the past values of electric field and director. We design an experiment in which the standard "instantaneous" model and our model predict effects of opposite signs; the experimental data support the latter model.
In this paper, by using a dual frequency liquid crystal material, we propose a liquid crystal device with a fast response characteristics. The dual frequency liquid crystal material has a positive dielectric anisotropy value at a low frequency. With a high frequency, the dielectric anisotropy becomes negative. Therefore, the relaxation process is governed by not only the elastic deformation, but also the dielectric interaction. The measured decay time and rise time were 0.88 ms and 0.33 ms, respectively.
Development of phases, evolution of microstructures, and dielectric response characteristics of amorphous lead iron tungstates during crystabllization were investiageted. A series of mircographs showing the evolution sequence of microstructures is presented. Crystallization was observed to initiate from inside of the amorphous material. A cubic perovskite phase developed fully at $760^{\circ}C$ from amorphous state via intermediate metastable crystalline structures. Dielectric constant of amorphous PFM was totally insensitive to the temperature change around the Curie temperature of crystalline material. Sintered pellet, with relative density of 96% and an almost pore-free dense internal microstructure, could be prepared from amorphous powder.
Electro-optic characteristics of liquid crystal display using fringe field switching(FFS) device depend on many parameters such as cell retardation, electrode structure, rubbing angle, cell gap and dielectric anisotropy. In this paper, the light efficiency of FFS mode will be analyzed to confirm the electro-optic characteristics according to positive dielectric anisotropy such as transmittance, operating voltage and response time.
Dielectric waveguide gratings of the image-guide type can be made by periodically cutting notches on the sides or in the top is the image guide. In this paper modeling of grattings using a transmission-line equivalent circuit with equal line lenghth is biscussed, and systematic design procedure of dielectric-waveguide bandpass filter using coupled gratings is presented. It is shown that experimental results is in excellent agreement with the computed response.
A sub-nanometer resolution Scanning Nonlinear Dielectric Microscope (SNDM) was developed for observing ferroelectric polarization. We also demonstrate that the resolution of SNDM is higher than that of a conventional piezo-response imaging. Secondly, we report new SNDM technique detecting higher nonlinear dielectric constants $\varepsilon$$\_$3333/ and $\varepsilon$$\_$33333/. Higher order nonlinear dielectric imaging provides higher lateral and depth resolution. Finally, the formation of artificial small inverted domain is reported to demonstrate that SNDM system is very useful as a nano-domain engineering tool. The nano-size domain dots were successfully formed in LiTaO$_3$ single crystal. This means that we can obtain a very high density ferroelectric data storage with the density above 1T-bits/inch$^2$.
