Effects of Fractions from Methanol Extract of Commelina communis on Blood Glucose Levels and Energy Metabolism in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats (닭의장풀 분획물이 당뇨 유발 흰쥐의 혈당과 에너지원 조성에 미치는 영향)

  • Methanol extracts of Commelina communis, a Korean wild edible plant showing hypoglycemic effect on diebetic rats were fractionated systematically by hexane, chloroform, butanol, and water, and these four fractions were administered orally to streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats to evaluate the hypoglycemic effect. The butanol and water fractions of Commelina communis lowered blood glucose levels of diebetic rats at a dose of 500 mg/kg/day. Administration of each fraction except that of chloroform increased the plasma protein levels. Liver protein levels were significantly higher in the butanol- and water fraction-fed groups. The results suggest that the butanol fraction of Commelina communis has hypoglycemic effect on diabetic rats and the intake of Commelina communis may be beneficial for the management of diabetes mellitus.

  • A novel series of benzothiazole derivatives were synthesized and assayed in vivo to investigate their hypoglycemic activity by streptozotocin-induced diebetic model in rat. These derivatives showed considerable biological efficacy when compared to glibenclamide, a potent and well known antidiabetic agent as a reference drug. All the compounds were effective, amongst them 3d showed more prominent activity at 100 mg/kg p.o. The experimental results are statistically significant at p<0.01 and p<0.05 level.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a sophisticated web-based artificial intelligence chatbot system designed to provide personalized dietary service for diabetic patients. According to a 2022 study, the prevalence of diabetes among individuals over 30 years old was 15.6% in 2020, identifying it as a significant societal issue with an increasing patient population. This study uses generative AI algorithms to tailor dietary recommendations for the elderly and various social classes, contributing to the maintenance of healthy eating habits and disease prevention. Through meticulous fine-tuning, the learning loss of the AI model was significantly reduced, nearing zero, demonstrating the chatbot's potential to offer precise dietary suggestions based on calorie intake and seasonal variations. As this technology adapts to diverse health conditions, ongoing research is crucial to enhance the accessibility of dietary information for the elderly, thereby promoting healthy eating practices and supporting disease prevention.

Development of a Computer-assited Patients Menu Planning System for Hospital Dietetics (병원 영양과의 환자식 식단 관리 전산 프로그램 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a computer-assisted patients menu planning program for hospital dietetics in order to improve the quality of menu for patients and to release managers from repetitive and routine tasks. Using this program, dietitians can spend more time on professional tasks. Moreover, few studies have been done on computer assisted patients menu planning for patients who need special diets for treatment in domestic hospital dietetics, therefore this program could be a great contribution. A 16-bit personal computer compatible with IBM-PC/AT was used. The data base files and processing program were created by Clipper package ver 5.0. This system can collect a number of meals, plan patients menu and computerize nutrient analysis. The future study will develop program(s) for purchasing, inventory control and data correction. The contents of computerized system are summarized as follows. 1. The number of daily meals of special and general diets given to the patients are collected and saved in database. These data were for the monthly list of meal census which could be printed out on the screen and/or the printer. 2. The menu planning was largely consisted of 2 sections. One was for the patients who require special diets and the other was general diet. And the special diets was divided into 6 sub-sections: diabetic, low-salt, low-fat, low-salt/low-protein, low-fat/low-cholesterol and low residue diets. 3. The nutrient analysis was composed of 11 diet. Sections and diebetic diet was divided into 9 sub-sections according to the calorie requirement. The calculated results were compared with the standards which were established by the hospital dietetic department.

Recognition of Ginseng by Diebetic and Hypertensive Patients in Daejeon and Geumsan Areas (대전.금산 지역 당뇨.고혈압 질환자의 인삼에 대한 인식도 조사)

  • Research on recognition, preference, and consumption of ginseng was conducted with the goal of enhancing the consumption of ginseng, and commercializing local ginseng dishes in Geumsan. With help from the Eulji University hospitals in Daejeon and Geumsan, a survey was completed by a group of 200 patients, including 50 diabetic and 50 hypertensive patients from each center. Results based on a patient's residence (p<0.001), and illness (p<0.001), showed that the percentage of outpatient treatments was very high at the center in Geumsan. Based on a patient's residence (p<0.001) and illness, a preference for ginseng was very high in Geumsan. Based on a patient's residence (p<0.01) and illness (p<0.05), the willingness to try new ginseng dishes was stronger at the center in Geumsan compared to the center at Daejeon. Based on residence and illness (p<0.001), hypertensive patients were more enthusiastic towards taking ginseng herbs. Based on residence (p<0.001) and illness (p<0.001), percipience concerning the effects of ginseng was more positive in Geumsan. Based on residence (p<0.001) and illness, the frequency of ginseng herb intake was higher in Geumsan. The research provides the basis for establishing changes in the perception of ginseng, providing accurate information, and promoting ginseng in local economies.

A study on the eating behaviors and food intake of diabetic patients in Daegu·Gyeongbuk area (대구·경북지역 당뇨 환자의 식행동 및 식품 섭취에 관한 조사 연구)

  • Rapid economic development has changed the dietary habits and patterns. Especially, western style diet has increased the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in Korea. To provide more specific and appropriate diet guideline for the prevention and for the treatment of T2DM, the investigation on the characteristics of diebetic patients related to the diet needs to be done. In this study, we therefore analyzed eating behaviors, dietary attitudes, and intake of food and nutrients of normal subjects (control, n=26) and diabetic patients (case, n=18) diagnosed T2DM within one year in Daegu Gyeongbuk area. Body mass index of the patients were significantly higher than the control (p<0.05). Overeating, high fried food and low whole grain intake were revealed as risk factors for T2DM. From the food frequency questionnaire analysis, salty foods such as fermented soybean paste (Doenjang) and watery Kimch intake were associated with T2DM. Intake of vegetable lipid, ${\beta}$-carotene, calcium, copper, and vitamin K were also shown to be associated with T2DM. Taken together, these findings suggest that maintaining ideal body weight and intake the foods with low salt, fat, and refined grain in appropriate amount may help to prevent and to manage T2DM.
