  • The present status of the mold industry, including the size of the mold industry in Korea, its position in the global market, the production of the mold industry, import and export, and recent trends in the mold industry were examined. The survey was implemented for the trends fo dies and molds industry in 2017 by answers on business environment for Korean Mold Industry Cooperative Union members. The sharp decline in plastic mold exports in 2015 led to a decline in overall exports. China and Japan account for a very large share of mold exporting countries, but exports to emerging markets such as India, Mexico and Vietnam contributed to the overall increase in mold exports. China, Japan, India, the United States and Mexico were named as exporting countries with more than US $ 200 million, and Vietnam showed similar tendency as a major exporter. A survey conducted by the Korea Mold Industry Cooperative Association showed that the decrease in production and exports was predicted. In order to overcome the difficulties of the mold industry, the need for research on the linkage of the mold industry and technology to the wave of the fourth industrial revolution has increased.

  • In recent years, the production value of Taiwanese mold and die industries have reached to a high peak in 1998, in amount of NT 604 hundred million dollars. But in recent years production value are going down year by year, till year of 2001 the production value have down to NT 394 hundred million dollars. Its main reason might be the major product were following in medium and low price category, the high accuracy and high cost mold and die still rely on import aboard. Therefore how to made the related technical database system on various field to provide the industry user to promote industries competition ability in mold and die is really urgent matter at this moment. In this research, we will offer how to apply the Visual Basic program language to edit a set of more perfect database system of mold and die material selection. At the present time, we have constructed complete Knowledge-Base-System of intelligence for forging mold and die material, the most related data from the existed data, the others are through our additional experimental results. By using this system by the user can got the related and need data easily, we hope it will reduce designing time and cost for mold and die.

  • The domestic mold industry is composed of 6,560 small and medium sized mold companies as of 2015. The structure of mold industry centered on less than 10 people in the past has been improved in the direction of increasing number of medium and large scale companies with more than 20 competitors with global competitiveness and has maintained its position as the world's second largest mold exporter with global competitiveness. Nevertheless, the manpower structure and corporate competitiveness structure of the mold industry is very high, with the proportion of production manpower reaching 70% and shortage rate of 10% or more in order to respond to the orders of customers. However, the development base for new employees with technological skills required by the industrial field is poor, and the inflow of young people is very limited due to factors such as the avoidance of small and medium enterprises and production jobs. It is expected that the labor shortage of mold enterprises will be further increased in the future. In the mold industry, due to the characteristics of small quantity multi-product production corresponding to the demand of the consumer, many production processes are individually and independently carried out, resulting in low labor productivity, and the structural time required for the worker to increase the working time Due to limitations, the working hours per week of the employees are about 50 hours. The implementation of the working time reduction bill, which is recently promoted by the government, is a crisis factor. In order to cultivate the mold industry, it is necessary to expand the base of molds to meet the intensification of global competition, the convergence of technologies to actively respond to the restructuring of the industrial structure, and the response to the new industry, It is necessary to improve labor productivity through policies such as development and dissemination of system, and to secure price, delivery and quality competitiveness in global market.

  • Recently, the demand of high-productivity injection mold increases since the consumption of packaging grows in the world. Stack mold is composed of more than two molds and it has very high productivity and economic efficiency. In advanced country, stack mold which has was developed already but, in occasion of domestic mold industry, there is no study of stack mold. In this study, die and mold of in-mold labeling was developed for securing the technique of manufacturing high-productivity mold.

  • Due to the recent growth of die/mold machining industry, demands for the high-precision and the high0quality of die product are increasing rapidly. Free surfaces of die/mold are often manufactured using the ball-end milling process. It is difficult to find the cutting condition of the ball-end milling process due to the free form machining for the various tool paths on inclined surface.

  • This study is designed to review the current status of the National Technical Qualification(NTQ) system in the field of die & mold, which is focused on deficiencies of the regulatory system and qualities of die & mold professionals including the master craftsman, engineer, industrial engineer and craftsman. And it is also the purpose of this study to suggest improvement strategies for the NTQ system in the field of the die & mold. This study analyze the NTQ system for the die & mold technologies or skills based on the role model which is matched their business demands, and prepares the authority(such as Human Resources Development Service of Korea) for NTQ creation, combination, abolition, setting questions, and standards correction with priority given to die & mold industry and NTQ. It also offers elective options to reshuffle NTQs through focus group interview by experts.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a high-strength, high-toughness, thin-walled aluminum shock absorber housing product by applying a high vacuum die casting method to improve internal gas defect and formability. The analysis program dedicated for the casting was used because it was too costly and time-consuming to adopt the gating system design. The final casting plan was designed based on the flow pattern of the material filled into the mold and the result of air pressure and air pocket after the material was completely filled in the mold. Gaty shape was designed as a split type. The runner was designed to have the same shape as the initial inlet curve of the cavity, and the flow of the molten metal was prevented from turbulent flow. The most favorable results were obtained when the injection speed was $V_2=4.0m/s$. Defects on pores were reduced by applying high vacuum level inside the mold.

  • To meet the need for trained work force from the industries, industry-oriented education for students majoring in die & mold in university level is required. If the new university graduates with creativity and high technology could be put right into the work places without training at the work sites, that will lead to remove the wasting factor in education and reinforce the competitiveness of Korea's technology power. Industries would be satisfied with the trained workforce from universities and the rate of employment will be increased. To meet the needs from industries and universities, die & mold design engineering curriculum tailored for industries is developed.

  • Recently, the mold industry has been developed to high-quality and high-productivity with various demands of the high-tech industry. Also, geometry parts of injection mold are complex and diverse optimum design through the injection molding analysis has become a matter of course. The mold industry is trying to revitalize the industry with demand technology development and manufacturing process improvement. However, products that have undercut is the need for a separate processing mechanism and structure of the mold is getting more complex, the cost is expensive. Therefore, improving the structure of the mold through a study on the forced ejecting for injection molding without undercut processing unit and to improve the productivity.

  • In the mold industry, CAM software has been introduced to solve the impossible or time-consuming part of the mold industry because the increase in labor costs, the drop in mold price, and the short delivery time are tasks to be solved not only in the manufacturing industry but also in the mold industry as a whole. In order to reduce the processing time and improve the surface roughness, we have been conducting various researches for efficient machining. This study was carried out to compare the ball end mill and radius end mill tools with the Power mill software and NC brain software under the same conditions and to find out the most efficient method of machining the smooth drafting surface and improving the surface roughness. (1) By machining the smooth drafting surface using radius end mill, the machining time is 23.7% faster than when using ball end mill. (2) Surface roughness when machined with radius end mill is smoother than when using ball end mill. Based on these results, it can not be applied to all shapes, but if it is a relatively wide and simple gradient shape, the raster machining method using radius end mill can be more effective in terms of delivery and quality than machining with ball end mill.
