This paper presents an experimental and a numerical investigation of a H-beam - composite box column joint fabricated with two new inner diaphragms and a continuous inner diaphragm. The main objective of the current research project is to investigate the structural performance of the newly developed inner diaphragms under a cyclic loading protocol. Hysteretic behaviour of the composite joints is analysed to investigate the structural performance of the new and continuous inner diaphragms. This paper compares the result of the finite element (FE) models with the new and continuous inner diaphragms against their counterpart experimental results. To produce a design criterion for the newly developed inner diaphragms, yielding or failure area of the inner diaphragms under tensile stress is analysed from the FE results.
Steel box girders have two webs and two flanges on top that are usually connected with shear connectors to the concrete deck and are also known as tub girders. The end diaphragms of such bridges comprise of a stiffened steel plate welded to the inside of the girder at each end. The diaphragms play a major role in transferring vertical and lateral loads to the bearings and substructure. A review of literature shows that the cyclic behavior of diaphragms under earthquake loading has not been studied previously. This paper uses a nonlinear finite element model to study the behavior of the end diaphragms under gravity and seismic loads. Different bearing device and stiffener configurations have been considered. Affected areas of the diaphragm are distinguished.
The basic concept and preliminary performance results of a miniaturized electroosmotic (EO) pump with diaphragms were included in the present study. The separation of an electroosmotic pumping liquid from a drug using diaphragms is mainly to have a freedom in choosing an electroosmotic pumping liquid and to achieve the optimal drug delivery, and, preferably its precise control. We performed maximum flow rate, maximum pressure, and maximum current measurements with and without diaphragm designs. As a result, the effect of diaphragms on pump performance at the maximum condition is small. However, the presence of diaphragms does not allow indefinite continuous pumping.
The role of intermediate diaphragms in concrete girder bridge was studied by structural tests about 1/2 scale model of the typical design. The purpose of this research is understanding of the role of intermediate diaphragms which has been misused by vertical load distribution and misunderstood by design specification. Experimental variables included : location and number of intermediate diaphragms which were made by reinforced concrete or steel. Service load was applied the structure under static loads. Numerical analysis of the test bridge using solid element of finite element method was verified by comparison with the experimental results. Based on the results, in no case was an appreciable reduction in terms of vertical deflection.
For chemical microsensors such as humidity and gas sensors, it is essential to obtain a single pore with a large inner surface and straight structure. In this paper, cylindrical macroporous silicon layers have been formed of p-silicon substrate by anodization in HF-ethanol-water solution with an applied current. The pores grew normal to the (100) surface and were uniformly distributed. The pore diameter was approximately $1.5~2{\mu}m$ with a depth of $20~30{\mu}m$ and the pores were not interconnected, which are in sharp contrast to the porous silicon reported previouly for similarly doped p-Si. Porous silicon diaphragms 18 to $200{\mu}m$ thick were formed by anistropic etching in TMAH solution and then anodization. The fabrication of macroporous silicon and free-standing diaphragms is expected to offer applications for microsensors, micromachining, and separators.
Macroporous silicon diaphragms 20 to $200{\mu}m$ thick have been formed on p-type silicon by anistropic etching in TMAH solution and then by electrochemical etching in HF-ethanol-water solution with an applied current. The pores have a pore diameter of $1.5{\sim}2{\mu}m$, with a depth of $20{\sim}30{\mu}m$ and are not interconnected, which are in sharp contrast to the porous silicon reported previouly for similarly doped p-Si. The fabrication of macroporous silicon and free-standing diaphragms is expected to offer new applications for microsensors, micro-machining, and separators.
In this paper, a novel method to figure out the relative residual stress distribution along the depth of silicon diaphragms is presented Cantilevers with various thickness are fabricated by the time controlled etching method using EPW as an etchant. The boron concentration along the depth of the cantilevers is obtained by the TSUPREM IV simulation, and the etching time to get the proper thickness is calculated. By measuring deflections of the p+ silicon cantilevers the stress profile along the depth of diaphragm is calculated. The obtained stress profile is reasonable and useful to expect the deflection of cantilevers and the buckling of diaphragms.
The research was conducted to investigate the effects of intermediate diaphragm in concrete girder bridge. The analytical variables consisted of various types(reinforced concrete and steel) and locations of intermediate diaphragm, slab thickness, girder spacing etc. Finite element analyses of the bridge model assuming simply support condition. The Vertical load distribution was determined to be essentially independent of type and location of intermediate diaphragms. Also, it is found that the practical design of intermediate diaphragm may be revised.
