  • Ultra-high brightness and thin displays need to optical micro-patterns which can uniformly diffuse the lights and low loss. The micro random patterns have characteristics to rise the optical efficiency such as light extraction, uniform diffusion. For this reason, various fabrication processes are studied for random patterns. In this study, the micro random patterns were machined by diamond turning which used a controlled cutting tool path with random cutting depth. The machined patterns had random shape and directionality along the circumferential direction. The average width and length of machined random pattern according to rotation radius were 40.13㎛~55.51㎛ and 37.25㎛~59.49㎛, and these results were compared with the designed result. Also, the machining error according to rotation radius in diamond turning using randomly controlled cutting depth was discussed.

  • Alumina, a typical ceramic material used for semiconductors and display parts, is the subject of research and development efforts for mineral material processing. Alumina is extremely difficult to process since it is brittleness to either fine ceramics material. We have studied the shape of diamond particles and their use in machinability for alumina processing. Our study was carried out under various processing conditions, including cutting speed, table speed, and the surface roughness of the work piece. We also analyzed the wear characteristics of the tool by total cutting.

  • In this study, presintered low purity alumina ceramics were machined with various tools to clarify the effects of the tool material, cutting condition and tool geometry on machinability. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. (a)The wear of tungsten carbide tool becomes smaller with the increase of the feed and clearance angle, and with the decrease of rake angle, especially exhibiting considerably smaller wear with both the decrease of rake angle and the increase of clearance angle. (b) So far as turning the ceramic presintered at low temperature, the diamond tool shows the best performance with higher feed. (c) The effect on the tool wear of the feed, clearance angle and rake angle becomes smaller in turning the ceramic presintered at higher temperature. (d) The tool wear is not severely affected by the depth of cut.

  • The main applications of CFRP are sports, aerospace and general industrial uses including automobiles. As this application fields expands the opportunity of machining, but CFRP is difficult to cut because of delamination of the composites and the short tool life. In this paper, the machinability of multidirectional CFRP by means of ultrasonic vibration cutting, which has been verified experimentally investigated. The experimentally to be highly effective in view of cutting force and surface quality.

  • The machinability of wear-resistible tungsten carbides and the tool wear behavior in machining of V30 and V50 tungsten carbides using PCD (Poly Crystalline Diamond) cutting tool was investigated to understand machining characteristics. This material is one of the difficult-to-cut materials in present, but their usage has been already broadened to every commercial applications such as mining tools, and impact resistant tools etc. Summary of the results are as follows. (1) Tool wear progression of PCD tools in turning of wear-resistible tungsten carbides were observed specially fast in primary cutting distance within 10m. (2) Three components of cutting resistance in this research were different in balance from the ordinary cutting such as that cutting of steel or cast iron. Those were expressed large value by order of thrust force, principal force, feed force. (3) If presume from viewpoint of high efficient cutting within this research, a proper cutting speed was 15m/min and a proper feed rate was 0.1mm/rev. In this case, it was found that the tool life of PCD tool was cutting distance until 230m approximately. (4) In cutting of wear-resistible tungsten carbides such as V30 and V50, it was recognized that the tool wear rate of V30 was very fast as compared with V50. (5) When the depth of cut was 0.1mm, there was no influence of the feed rate on the feed force. And the feed force tended to decrease as the cutting distance was long, because the tool was worn and the tool edge retreated. (6) It was observed that the tungsten carbides were adhered to the flank.

  • Various types of elliptical motions are generated by PZT mechanism which is composed of two parallel piezoelectric actuators. Elliptical vibration cutting(EVC) is obtained by attaching single crystal diamond cutting tool to the mechanism, and V-grooving for Brass and Aluminum is carried out by applying the EVC. It is experimentally observed that the cutting force in the process of the EVC reduces compared to the ordinary non-vibration cutting, which is due to the decrease of undeformed chip thickness and frictional force between the tool and chip. Ultrasonic elliptical vibration cutting(UEVC) suppresses burr formation and decreases cutting force still more, so UEVC makes it possible to enhance the shape accuracy of machined surface.

  • This paper investigates the micro-cutting of cemented carbides using PCD (polycrystalline diamond) and PCBN (polycrystalline cubic boron nitride) cutting tools are performed with SEM direct observation method. The purpose of this study is to make clear the cutting mechanism of cemented carbides and the fracture of WC particles at the plastic deformation zone in orthogonal micro-cutting. And also to achieve systematic understanding, the effect of machining parameter on chip formation and machined surface was studied, including cutting speed, depth of cut and various tool rake angle. Summary of the results are shown below. (1) Three type of chip formation process have been proposed by the results of the direct observation in orthogonal micro-cutting of cemented carbide materials. (2) From the whole observation of chip formation, primary WC particles are crushed and/or fine grained in the shearing deformation zone. A part of them are observed to collide directly with a cutting edge of tool by following the micro-cutting. (3) Surface finish, surface morphology and surface integrity is good to obtain by cutting with PCD cutting tool compared with PCBN. (4) The machined surface has the best quality near the low cutting speed of 10${\mu}m$/sec with a cutting depth of 10 ${\mu}m$ using 0$^\circ$ rake angle and 3$^\circ$ flank angle in this condition, but it was found that excessively low speed, for example the extent of 1 ${\mu}m$/sec, is not good enough to select for various reason.

  • Carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) are extremely strong and light fiber-reinforced plastics containing carbon fibers. CFRPs can be expensive to produce, but are commonly used wherever high strength-to-weight ratio and rigidity are required, such as in the aerospace, automotive, and ship superstructure industries. In CFRP drilling, the tool performance greatly varies depending on the tool shapes, cutting conditions, and diamond coating. This study developed a new type of tungsten carbide drill with multi-blade edges to evaluate the surface quality of CFRP materials according to the coating thickness of diamond-coated drills. Experiments on tool wear, surface roughness, and burr formation were conducted. The bore exit quality of a 12 mμ -coated drill was better than that of a 6 mμ -coated drill. The superior effects of the 12 mμ -coated drill and the good surface quality of CFRP were also demonstrated.

  • Micro-machine tool is essential in the micro/meso cutting for the sake of saving of space, resources, and energy. In this research, a micro-turning lathe was fabricated with piezoelectric feed drive mechanism, and motion of each axis was generated by stepwise mechanism with two piezo actuators. The resolution to drive the axis was $0.05{\mu}m$ and position accuracy less than $2{\mu}m$ was assured. From the positioning experiment, piezo feed mechanism is good enough for the micro machine tools. Many fuming experiments were carried out with diamond-cutting tools to evaluate cutting capability of a machine tool. Continuous flow type chip could be obtained even if the cutting speed was very low due to small diameter of workpiece. However, thorough investigation about machineability in micro/meso cutting is inevitable to assure high quality surface roughness in micro machine tool.

  • This paper has been considered on the cutting characteristics such as chip formation and surface roughness for Inconel 690 alloy with difficult-to-cut because of high toughness and strength. We have made efforts solving the problem to difficult-to-cut of Inconel by improvement of tool with TiN coating and the selection of optimum cutting condition. We used the CCD camera and the surface roughness tester to observe the chip formation and the state of machined surface by using the improved tool with diamond coating and various cutting condions. We have found that the chip formation showed the tooth shape of tooth blade and the surface roughness was very poor. but it can be better by selection of optimum cutting condition.
