  • This paper is concerned with the analysis of plastic deformation of bimetal co-extrusion process. Two sets of material combination have been adopted for analysis, i.e. combinations of Cu/Al and Fe/Al. In the first set of material combination, the selected materials are AA 1100 aluminum alloy as hard material and CDA 110 as soft one. This type of material selection is to examine the effect of hard core and soft sleeve and vice versa on the deformation pattern in terms of plastic zone and velocity discontinuity along the contact surface between construction materials. Four different cases of co-extrusion process in terms of material combination and interference bonding were simulated to investigate the effect of material arrangement between core and sleeve, and of bonding on the plastic zones and velocity discontinuity. In the other set of material combination, model materials used as core and sleeve were AA 1100 and AISI 1010, which are relatively soft and hard, respectively. Process parameters except diameter ratio of core to sleeve material such as semi-die angle, reduction in area in global sense and die comer radius have been set constant throughout the simulation to concentrate our effort on the analysis of influence of diameter ratio on deformation behavior such as deformation zone, surface expansion, exit velocity discontinuity between composite materials, and extrusion forces.

  • Denting of steam generator (SG) tube is defined as the reduction in tube diameter due to the stresses exerted by the corrosion products formed on the outer diameter surface. This phenomenon is mostly observed in the crevices between SG tube and the top-of tubesheet or tube support plate. Despite the replacement of SG tube with Alloy 690, which has better corrosion resistance than Alloy 600, the denting of SG tube still remains a potential problem that could decrease the SG integrity. Deformation of SG tube by denting phenomenon can affect the surface properties and microstructure of SG tube. In this study, the effects of plastic deformation on surface properties and microstructure of Alloy 690 thermally treated (TT) tube was investigated by using the various analysis techniques. The plastic deformation of Alloy 690 increased the surface roughness and area. Many surface defects such as ripped surface and micro-cracks were observed on the deformed Alloy 690TT specimen. Based on the electron backscatter diffraction analysis, the dislocation density of deformed SG tube increased compared to non-deformed SG tube. In addition, the effects of changes in surface properties and microstructure of SG tube on general corrosion behavior were discussed.

  • Bending motion has been used in the surgical instruments with bending structures and tendon mechanisms. A simplified bending angle amplification ratio between the proximal and distal bending joint was derived in this article. The bending structure of disk and rib in the proximal joint was analyzed based on finite element method with an emphasis on the circumferential uniformity of bending stiffness. Regarding the distal joint, optimal design and sensitivity analysis was done with four design variables of outer and inner diameter, rib height and rib width while maximizing the deformation under the stress distribution below the yield stress. Outer diameter and rib width are most critical to maximum deformation as the outer diameter and inner diameters are so to maximum equivalent stress.

  • The warm shrink fitting process is generally used to assemble automobile transmission parts (shaft/gear). But the fitting process can cause the dimensions of addendum and dedendum of the gear to change with respect to the fitting interference and the profile of the gear. As a result, there may be additional noise and vibration between gears. To address these problems, we analyzed the warm shrink fitting process according to process parameters; the fitting interference between the outer diameter of the shaft and the inner diameter of the gear, the inner diameter of the gear, addendum and dedendum of the gear, the heating temperature. In this study, a closed form equation for predicting the amount of deformation of addendum and dedendum in the R-direction was proposed. And the FEA method to analyze the cooling process was proposed for thermal-structural-thermal coupled field analysis of the warm shrink fitting process (heating-fitting-cooling process).

  • The influences of mixed mode of bending-tension on the Ic degradation and their interaction on the strain effect were evaluated in this study. A test fixture which applies a mixed deformation mode of bending-tension to HTS tapes has been newly devised. When the strain induced in the tape due to the mixed deformation mode was expressed as a total tensile strain, the irreversible strain to the critical current degradation of Bi-2223 tapes increased when compared with the case of simple bending mode, and the value at both ends were larger than that at the central region of the bend part. The Ic degradation behavior at the region exceeding the irreversible strain showed quiet a rapid drop of the Ic when compared with the simple bending cases. As the applied bending strain increased namely as the diameter of mandrel adopted decreased, the apparent irreversible strain of Bi-2223 tapes increased However, the increment decreased as the mandrel diameter decreased. As a result, it could be found that the tension to be applied to the Bi-2223 tapes during cabling of HTS tapes should be smaller, as the mandrel diameter becomes smaller.

  • A kinematically admissible velocity field for closed-die forging of spur gear is proposed. The velocity field is divided into three regions of deformation. In the analysis, the involute curve is approximated to be straight line and the upper-bound method is used to calculate energy dissipation rate. A constant frictional factor has been assumed on the contacting surfaces. The effects of root diameter relative pressure is independent of root diameter for the same number of teeth, but increases with the number of teeth on a given root diameter. In the presence of friction, relative forging pressure increases with increasing root diameter at the start of forging, but decreases with increasing root diameter in the processing of forging.

In the analysis, the involute curve is approximated to be straight line and the upper-bound method is used to calculate energy dissipation rate. A constant frictional frictional factor has been assumed on the contacting surfaces. The effects of root diameter, number of teeth, and friction factor are determined on the relative forging pressure. The frictionless relative pressure is independent of root diameter for the same number of teeth, but increases with the number of teeth on a given root diameter. In the presence of friction, the relative forging presure increasing root diameter at the start of forging, but decreases with increasing root diameter in the processing of forging.

  • Monotonic four-point bending tests were conducted on straight pipe specimens, 102 mm in diameter with local wall thinning, in order to investigate the effects of the depth, shape, and location of wall thinning on the deformation and failure behavior of pipes. The local wall thinning simulated natural erosion/corrosion metal loss. The deformation and fracture behavior of the straight pipes with local wall thinning was compared with that of non wall-thinning pipes. The failure modes were classifiedas local buckling, ovalization, or crack initiation, depending on the depth, shape, and location of the local wall thinning. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were carried out using the finite element method. The deformation and failure behavior, simulated by finite element analyses, coincided with the experimental results.

  • The divergence connection between steel circular tubes is widely used in such structures as factory facilities, steel circular hollow section truss, and off-shore tower. Steel circular hollow section (SCHS) have close section, and it makes their per-unit production expense higher than open sectioned products like L-shape, H-shape steels, but the sectional resistance of SCHS against vertical compression and torsion is very high. Despite the structural merits of SCHS, however, many engineers dislike to use them in their design because of uncertainty regarding the stress distribution and deformation behavior at their connections. Therefore, this thesis dealt with X-type connections, the most common forms of connection, and studied their load-deformation relationship. It observed how to show the load-deformation relationship at steel circular tube connections according to the diameter-thickness ratio (D/T) of the chord and diameter of branch-diameter of chord ratio (d/D) and suggested prediction yield load using by ring analysis method.
