  • This paper presents experimental results for the confining characteristics of cylinder with center-hole and spiral reinforcements. The experiments have been conducted for the specimens with primary variables i.e., spiral reinforcement ratio and diameter of center-hole which affect the compressive strength and stress-strain relationship. Through this research, it was found that the compressive strength and ductility were increased with the ratio of spiral reinforcement because the lateral expansion of the concrete inside the spiral was restrained by the spiral, but dependent on the size of center-hole.

  • Pressure compensating temperature control valve(TCV) is one of the important control devices, which is used to maintain the constant temperature of working fluid in power and chemical plants. The ratio of cylinder hole diameters of inlet and outlet is the main design parameters of TCV. So this needs to be investigated to improve the function of control of temperature and void fraction. In this study, numerical analysis is carried out with various ratios of cylinder hole diameters of the inlet and outlet in the TCV. Especial1y, the distribution of the static pressure Is investigated to calculate the new coefficient($C_{\upsilon}$) and resistance coefficient(K). The governing equations are derived from making using of three-dimensional Naver-Stokes equations with standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and SIMPLE algorithm. Using a commercial code, PHOENICS, pressure and flow fields in TCV are calculated with different inlet and outlet diameters of the cylinder hole for cold and hot water passages.

  • The leading edge of a turbine blade was simulated as a circular cylindrical surface. The effect of free-stream turbulence on the mass transfer upstream of the injectionhole has been investigated experimentally. The effects of injection location, blowing ratio on the Sherwood number distribution were examined as well. The mass transfer coefficients were measured by a naphthalene sublimation technique. The free-stream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is 53,000. Other conditions investigated are: free-stream turbulence intensities of 3.9% and 8.0%, injection locations of $40^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$ from the front stagnation point of the cylinder, and blowing ratios of 0.5 and 1.0. The role of the horseshoe vortex formed upstream edge of the injected jet is dicussed in detail. When the blowing ratio is unity, and the coolant jet is injected at $40^{\circ}$, the mass transfer upstream of the jet is not affected by the coolant jet at all. On the other hand, when the injection hole is located beyond $50^{\circ}$, the mass transfer upstream edge of the injection hole suddenly increases due to the formation of the horseshoe vortex, but it dereases as the free-stream turbulence intensity increases because the strength of the horseshoe vortex structure becomes weakened. The role of the horseshoe vortex is clearly evidenced by placing a rigid rod at the injection hole instead of issuing the jet. In the case of the rigid rod, the spanwise Sherwood number upstream of the injection hole is much larger due to the intense influence of the horseshoe vortex.

  • This study is to develop the diesel engine which has 6 cylinder natural aspiration direct injection type of 7.4$\ell$ with high performance, low emissions and low fuel consumption Finally the developed engine meets Korean `98 exhaust emission regulation for the city bus of heavy duty diesel engine by optimizing the various combustion parameters affecting performance and exhaust emissions. Combustion parameters are the swirl ratio of intake ports, the profile of injection pump`s cam affecting injection pressure, the design features of piston bowl of injection pump`s cam affecting injection pressure, the design features of piston bowl of combustion chamber and injector`s hole size. Through experimental analysis, various combustion parameters are optimized and the results are as follows; the swirl ratio is 2.20, the profile of injection pump`s cam is concave and re-entrant ratio, inner diameter of piston bowl and hole diameter of injector is 0.88,$\psi$64.0mm and $\psi$0.25mm respectively.

  • In order to investigate the effects of various injection hole shapes on the film cooling of turbine blade, three test models having cylindrical and shaped holes were used. A three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code with standard k-$\epsilon$ model was used to compute the film cooling coefficient on the film cooled turbine blade. Over 330,000 grids were used to compute the flow over the blade. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was $7.1{\times}10^4$. The turbulence intensity kept at $5.0\%$ for all inlets. The effect of coolant blowing ratio was studied for various blowing ratios. For each blowing ratios, wall temperatures around the surface of test model were calculated. Temperature was visualized using cartesian cut-cell method to obtain traces of the injected secondary air on the test surface, so we could interpret the film effectiveness as temperature distributions.

  • When draining takes place through an axially located drain port in a cylindrical tank without any prevent, a vortex with an air core occurs. In this study, semi spherical concave and convex meshes with different size inner hole are used to find the air core can suppress. The study is carried out with different values of inner hole of mesh and different install direction of semi spherical mesh using PIV and measured velocity distribution. By providing a mesh, the air core can be prevented, even if the ratio of inner hole of mesh and diameter of cylinder is around 0.66. The experimental results show that a convex mesh type is more effective to suppress the air core generation than a concave mesh type.

  • Dispersion of coolant jets in a film cooling flow field is the result of a highly complex interaction between the film cooling jets and the mainstream. In order to investigate the effect of blowing ratios on the film cooling of turbine blade, cylindrical body model was used. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was $7.1{\times}10^4$. The effect of coolant flow rates was studied for blowing ratios of 0.7, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5, respectively. The temperature distribution of the cylindrical model surface is visualized by infrared thermography (IRT). Results show that the film-cooling performance could be significantly improved by the shaped injection holes. For higher blowing ratio, the spanwise-diffused injection holes are better due to the lower momentum flux away from the wall plane at the hole exit.

  • This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a helical flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one is rotating. The pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of Non-Newtonian fluid, aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC) and bentonite with inner cylinder rotational speed of 0~400 prm. Also, the visualization of helical flows has been performed to observe the unstable waves. The results of present study reveal the relation of the Reynolds number Re and Rossby number Ro with respect to the skin friction coefficients. In somehow, they show the existence of flow instability mechanism. The pressure losses increase as the rotational speed increases, but the gradient of pressure losses decreases as the Reynolds number increases in the regime of transition and turbulence. And the increase of flow disturbance by Taylor vortex in a concentric annulus with rotating inner cylinder results in the decrease of the critical Reynolds number with the increase of skin friction coefficient.
