Recently two breeding programs were carried out for isolation of new parental inbred lines in Iran. This study was undertaken in order to estimate the combining ability effects and heterosis of these lines. For this purpose an $8\times8$ diallel cross analysis including eight inbred lines of silkworm with four lines from each program were studied for their five quantitative traits. The results indicated that reciprocal effects appeared insignificant for most of traits. Japanese lines of 111 and 113 were best combiners for shell weight, cocoon weight and shell percentage traits. With respect to pupation rate, Chinese line 110 was the best and according to general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) variances, it is superior in specific combinations. Hybrid $109\times110$ showed better characters for both productive and viability traits. Hybrids with high heterosis had high SCA too.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the degrees and directions of dominance, and gene distributions by analysing diallel crosses of oriental varieties. The analysis of Wr-Vr indicated non-allelic gene interaction for days to (lowering and number of leaves. Five Plant characteristics showed different degrees of dominance : incomplete dominance for Plant height and leaf shape, over dominance for , wield and sugar, and complete dominance for nicotine. It was shown that additive genetic variance was predominant for plant height, leaf shape, and total sugar. More number of dominant genes were present in Kavala and canthi for Plant height; Basma, Samsun and Izmir for leaf shape ; and Basma and Samsun (or nicotine. Their directions of dominance were tall height, narrow leaves, and low nicotine, respectively.

The studies were conducted to test for combining ability and to evaluate resistance to maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) by diallel crosses of corn inbreds. For the genetic analysis of the resistance, a diallel set of crosses without reciprocals was made using the eight corn inbreds which had different degrees of resistance to MDMV. Twenty eight $F_1$ hybrids showed different symtom severity. the highest value is 3.63 and the lowest value is 1.87 in disease ratings (1-4). General combining ability (GCA) for resistance to MDMV was highly significant, but specific combining ability (SCA) was not significant. Two inbreds, A632 and KS15 showed negative GCA effects, indicating that these parents were good general combiners and that resistance to MDMV increased in hybrid combinations. Hyrid A632 x KS5, showed the highest negative SCA effect and several combinations showed negative SCA effects. The analysis of parent-offspring covariance (Wr) and array variance (Vr), suggest that there may be many dominant genes in the resistant inbreds and many recessive genes in the susceptible inbreds.
The experiment was conducted to get basic information for cotton breeding program through four-variety diallel cross population. Additive, dominant, maternal, and reciprocal effect were observed significantly for days to maturity. Based on the Vr-Wr graphical analysis, the characters, number of bolls per plant, boll weight, seed and lint weight per boll, lint weight per boll, width of seed, 100-seed weight, days to flowering, and days to maturity were found to inherit incomplete dominance, and the characters of number of bolls per plant, width of seed, number of seeds per boll, and length of seed were assumed to inherit over dominance. The component of genetic variance analysis for boll weight, seed and lint weight per boll, lint weight per boll, number of seeds per boll, length of seed, and days to flowering showed that additive effects were higher than dominant effects. The narrow-sense heritability(h$_2$N) for boll weight, seed and lint weight per boll, lint weight per boll, days to flowering, and days to maturity showed high values as more than 43.19%. The estimate of broad-sense heritability(h$_2$B) value was higher than that of h$_2$N because of the low importance of dominance effects.
The studies were conducted to obtain basic informations on inheritance of some quantitative characters in kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Seven parents (Felibon, Renka, Processor, Kaboom, $BO_{22}$, Local variety $\#1$ and Local variety $\#2)$ and $F_1$ hybrids of 21 crosses from a set of diallel cross among varieties were used to estimate combining ability for eight agronomic characters such as days to flowering, days to maturity, stem length, pod numbers per plant, pod length, grain numbers per plant, 100-grain weight and grain weight per plant. General combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were significantly different among all characters, and values of GCA were greater than those of SCA in all characters except number of grains per plant. In effect of GCA, Felibon expressed high GCA effect for days to flowering and number of grains per plant. Local variety $\#1$ showed high GCA effect for 100-grain weight and stem length. Local variety $\#2$appeared to high GCA effect for 100-grain weight and grain weight per plant. Processor expressed high GCA effect for days to maturity and grain weight per plant. Kaboom showed high GCA effect days to flowering and days to maturity. $BO_{22}$ appeared high GCA effect for all characters except for days to flowering, days to maturity and stem length. In the SCA effect, crosses of Felibonx Renka and Local variety $\#2{\times}Processor$ exhibited in high negative effect for days to flowering. Thus, these crosses were evaluated to useful for breeding early maturing variety. Crosses of breeding high yield variety were considered of $Felibon{\times}Local$ variety $\#1$, $Felibon{\times}Renka$ and Local variety $\#2{\times}BO_{22}$.

We conducted a 4 × 4 diallel cross-mating test using 934 chickens from four grandparent stock lines to develop a new synthetic breed of Korean native chicken. The mean values, combining ability, and reciprocal effects on survival rate, body weight, and hen-day egg production were analyzed. In phenotypes, most chickens have yellowish-brown, reddish-brown and mixed color feathers. The average survival rate was 86.8±12.3%, with the highest in YH combination. Specific combining ability (SCA) had a greater effect on survival rate than general combining ability (GCA), and the SCA of HY combination was the highest. The 16 cross-combinations were distinctly divided into three weight groups according to their genetic characteristics. At 12 weeks of age, GCA showed a greater effect on weight than SCA, and the SCA of FH combination was the highest. The age at first egg laying was 157 days, and the crosses reached sexual maturity faster than the pure lines. The egg production rate was highest in SY at 79.5±2.1%. The GCA and SCA for hen-day egg production were similar, and the SCA was highest in the HS and FY combinations. The reciprocal effect showed that the offspring's egg production rate was high when S and Y were maternal parents in almost all combinations. In conclusion, FH and HF combinations, which have excellent growth performance, are the most desirable paternal parent stock strains, and FY, FS, HY, and SY combinations, which have excellent laying performance with moderate weight, are the preferred maternal strains.
In order to obtain the basic information on the response of different day-length to heading date and on the inheritance of heading date of barley varieties. the 8 parents F$_1$ diallel crosses were tested with 4 different day-length. Varietal differences in photo-sensitivity were observed and Haganemugi was the most photo-insensitive variety. The inheritance of earliness were appeared to be partial dominance or partial ressesive and the inheritance of photo-insensitivity over photo-sensitivity were controlled by the single ressesive factor.
Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) accumulate in the leaves of barley during cold acclimation, where they may inhibit ice recrystallization and produce freezing resistance of the plant. Four parental diallel crosses of the barley varieties were used to determine the heritability of AFPs and the relationship between the accumulation level of AFPs and freezing resistance. The concentration of apoplastic proteins in the cold-acclimated leaves was increased in the mean by four-fold over as compared with that of nonacclimated. The diallel cross analyses revealed that the gene of Sacheon 6 was dominant and those of Reno and Dongbori 1 were recessive. The AFPs had high narrow-sense heritabilities. The general combining ability effects of Reno and Dongbori 1 were much higher than the other parents. The bands of 32-kD for GLP, 35-& 28-kD for CLP and 25-, 22- & 16-kD for TLP were observed in the apoplastic extracts from cold-acclimated plants, but there were no clear differences between the parents and Fl hybrids. The concentrations of AFPs were significantly correlated with the degree of freezing resistance, indicating that the concentration of AFPs in the plant is the very important factor for freezing resistance.
This study was conducted to clarify the genetic effect on the duration of grain filling with using the eight corn inbreds. In diallel cross analysis, the grain filling during the lag period showed partial dominance with great additive effects. Inbreds FR14A and A508 showed greater recessive gene effects for lag period, while FR25 showed greater effects of dominant genes. The genetic analysis for the effective filling period(EFP) showed over dominance without additive gene effects. FR25 of 8 inbreds showed greatest effects of dominant genes for EFP, while YUBC208 showed greater recessive gene effects for EFP than other inbreds. The genetic analysis for total grain filling period(TGFP) seemed to be due to partial dominance with greater additive effects. Early inbred line, YUBC208 especially showed greater recessive gene effects for TGFP than others. No. of effective genes related to EFP and TGFP were estimated by at least 5.
