Nine tests to failure are performed on full-scale eight composite beams with unreinforced web opening having ribbed slabs with formed deck which are perpendicular to the steel section and one steel beam. The effects of slab width, reinforcing of stud, moving of rib, moment-shear ratio are studied. At the low M/V ratio, Vierendeel action around the high moment end of the opening is occurred and the large deflection across the opening and transverse cracking are occurred with increasing of applied load. As the M/V ratio increases, the relative deflection across the opening decreases. And at failure, full tensile strain are occurred at bottom T section of steel beam, and concrete crushes at the High Moment End of the opening. With narrow slabs, diagonal tension failure at the high moment end of the opening is occurred. And with wide slabs, rib punch-through failure is occurred near the high moment end of the opening. The implications for design are discussed.
Reinforced concrete frame buildings with masonry infill walls are one of the most popular structural systems in the world. In most cases, the effects of masonry infill walls are not considered in structural models. The results of earthquakes show that infill walls have a significant effect on the seismic response of buildings. In some cases, the buildings collapsed as a result of the formation of a soft story. This study developed a simple method, called corner opening, by replacing the corner of infill walls with a very flexible material to enhance the structural behavior of walls. To evaluate the proposed method a series of experiments were conducted on masonry infill wall and reinforced concrete frames with and without corner openings. Two 1:4 scale masonry infill walls with and without corner openings were tested under diagonal tension or shear strength and two RC frames with full infill walls and with corner opening infill walls were tested under monotonic horizontal loading up to a drift level of 2.5%. The experimental results revealed that the proposed method reduced the strength of infill wall specimens but considerably enhanced the ductility of infill wall specimens in the diagonal tension test. Moreover, the corner opening in infill walls prevented the slid shear failure of the infill wall in RC frames with infill walls.
Steel fiber and Polymer are used widely for the reinforcement material of RC structures because of its excellence of durability, serviceability as well as mechanical properties. Polymer-Steel fibrous high strength concrete beam's input ratio are 1.0%. The shear span-to-depth ratio are 1.5, 2.8 and 3.6, compressive strength of specimens 320kg/㎠, 436kgf/㎠ and 520kgf/㎠ in 28 days. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural crack and of diagonal crack, from which crack patte군 and fracture modes are earned. Also, stress-strain, load-strain and load-deflection are examined during the test cracks(shear crack, flexural crack, and diagonal tension crack), when the load values are sketched according to the growth of crack. Result are as follows; (1) The failure modes of the specimens increase in rigidity and durability in accordance with the increase of mixing steel fiber and polymer. (2) The load of initial crack was the same as the theory of shear-crack strength (3) Polymer-Steel fibrous high strength concrete beams have increased the deflection and strain at failure load, improving the brittleness of the high strength concrete. (4) In this result of study, an additional study need to make a need formular because the study is different from ACI formular and Zsutty formular.
The study is part of an experimental program on full-scale Un-Reinforced Masonry (URM) wall panels strengthened with Textile reinforced mortars (TRM). Eight brick walls (two with and five without central opening), were tested under the diagonal tension (shear) test method in order to investigate the strengthening system effectiveness on the in-plane behaviour of the walls. All the URM panels consist of the innovative components, named "Orthoblock K300 bricks" with vertical holes and a thin layer mortar. Both of them have great capacity and easy application and can be constructed much more rapidly than the traditional bricks and mortars, increasing productivity, as well as the compressive strength of the masonry walls. Several parameters pertaining to the in-plane shear behaviour of the retrofitted panels were investigated, including shear capacity, failure modes, the number of layers of the external TRM jacket, and the existence of the central opening of the wall. For both the control and retrofitted panels, the experimental shear capacity and failure mode were compared with the predictions of existing prediction models (ACI 2013, TA 2000, Triantafillou 1998, Triantafillou 2016, CNR 2018, CNR 2013, Eurocode 6, Eurocode 8, Thomoglou et al. 2020). The experimental work allowed an evaluation of the shear performance in the case of the bidirectional textile (TRM) system applied on the URM walls. The results have shown that some analytical models present a better accuracy in predicting the shear resistance of all the strengthened masonry walls with TRM systems which can be used in design guidelines for reliable predictions.
Strength of reinforced concrete beams can easily be increased by the use of externally bonded CFRP composites. However, the mode of failure of CFRP strengthened beam is usually brittle due to tension-shear failure in the concrete substrate or bond failure near the CFRP-Concrete interface. In order to improve the ductility of CFRP strengthened concrete beams, critical variables need to be investigated. This experimental and analytical research focused on a series of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP composites to enhance the flexural capacity and ductility. The main variables were the amount of CFRP composites, the amount of longitudinal and shear reinforcement, and the effect of CFRP end diagonal anchorage system. Sixteen full-scale beams were investigated. A new design guideline was proposed according to the effects of the above-mentioned variables. The experimental and analytical results were found to be in good agreement.
In this paper, an analytical model is proposed to predict the shear strenth of RC beams strengthened by FRP. This predictional model is composed of two basic models-the upper bound theorem for shear failure (shear tension or shear compression criteria) and a truss model based on the lower bound theorem for diagonal tension creteria. Also, a simple flexural theory based on USD is used to explain flexural failure. The major cause of destruction of RC beams shear strengthened by FRP does not lie in FRP fracture but in the loss of load capacity incurred by rip-off failure of shear strengthening material. Since interfacial shear stree between base concrete and the FRP is a major variable in rip-off failure mode, it is carefully analyzed to derive the shear strengthening effect of FRP. The ultimate shear strength and failure mode of RC beams, using different strengthening methods, estimated in this predictional model is then compared with the result derived from destruction experiment of RC beams shear strengthened using FRP. To verify the accuracy and consistency of the analysis, the estimated results using the predictional model are compared with various other experimental results and data from previous publications. The result of this comparative analysis showed that the estimates from the predictional model are in consistency with the experimental results. Therefore, the proposed shear strength predictional model is found to predict with relative accuracy the shear strength and failure mode of RC beams shear strengthened by FRP regardless of strengthening method variable.
Interfacial and microfailure properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites were evaluated using both tensile fragmentation and compressive Broutman tests. A monomeric and two polymeric coupling agents were applied via the electrodeposition (ED) and the dipping applications. A monomeric and a polymeric coupling agent showed significant and comparable improvements in interfacial shear strength (IFSS) compared to the untreated case under both tensile and compressive tests. Typical microfailure modes including cone-shaped fiber break, matrix cracking, and partial interlayer failure were observed under tension, whereas the diagonal slipped failure at both ends of the fractured fiber appeared under compression. Adsorption and shear displacement mechanisms at the interface were described in terms of electrical attraction and primary and secondary bonding forces.
The ultimate behavior of a reinforced concrete hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell under uniformly distributed vertical load is investigated using an inelastic, large displacement finite-element program originally developed at North Carolina State University. Unlike with the author's previous study which shows that the saddle shell possesses a tremendous capacity to redistribute the stresses, introducing tension stiffening in the model the cracks developed are no longer through cracks and formed as primarily bending cracks. Even though with small tension stiffening effect, the behavior of the shell is changed markedly from the one without tension stiffening effect. The load-deflection curves are straight and the slope of the curves is quite steep and remains unchanged with varying the tension stiffening parameters. The failure of the shell took place quite suddenly in a cantilever mode initiated by a formation of yield lines in a direction parallel to the support-to-support diagonal. The higher the tension stiffening parameters the higher is the ultimate load. The present study shows that the ultimate behavior of the shell primarily depends on the concrete tensile characteristics, such as tensile strength (before cracking) and the effective tension stiffening (after cracking). As the concrete characteristics would vary over the life of the shell, a degree of uncertainty is involved in deciding a specified ultimate strength of the saddle shell studied. By the present study, however, the overload factors based on ACI 318-95 are larger than unity for all the cases studied except that the tension stiffening parameter is weak by 3 with and without the large displacement effect, which shows that the Lin-Scordelis saddle shell studied here is at least safe.
In a companion paper, a rational mechanical model to predict the entire behavior of point-loaded RC slender beams (a/d > 2.5) without shear reinforcement was developed. This paper presents the test results of 9 slender shear beams and compares them with analytical results performed by the proposed model. They are grouped by two parameters, which are shear span ratio and concrete strength. Three kinds of concrete strength the 26.5, 39.2, and 58.8 MPa were included as a major experimental parameter together with different shear span ratios ranging from 3 to 6 depending on the test series. Tests were set up as a traditional 3 point bending test. Various measurements were taken to monitor abrupt shear failure. Test results were not only compared with analytical results from the proposed model, but also other formulas, to consider the various aspects of shear failure such as kinematical conditions or shear capacity. Finally, a review of the proposed model is presented with respect to the shear transfer mechanisms and the effect of test parameters. Results show that several assumptions and proposals adopted in the proposed model are rational and reasonable.
