  • A rotating magnetic field (RMF) ${\Phi}_1-{\Phi}_2$ model was developed in consideration of the skin effect. The rotating magnetic field's induced three-dimensional flow was simulated numerically, and the influence of the skin effect was investigated. The rotating magnetic field drives the rotating convection in the azimuthal direction, and a secondary convection appears in the radial-meridional direction. The results indicate that ignoring the skin effect results in a smaller azimuthal velocity component and larger radial and axial velocity components, and that the deviation becomes more obvious with the larger dimensionless shielding parameter K.

  • This paper presents a statistical analysis of empirical fragility curves for bridge. The empirical fragility curves are developed utilizing bridge damage data obtained from the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu(Kobe) earthquake. Two-parameter lognormal distribution functions are used to represent the fragility curves with the parameters estimated by the maximum likelihood method. This paper also presents methods of testing the goodness of fit of the fragility curves and estimating the confidence intervals of the two parameters(median and log-standard deviation) of the distribution. An analytical interpretation of randomness and uncertainty associated with the median is provided.

  • In the thermal-hydraulic design, the effect of fuel rod bow is quantified tv the rod bow DNBR penalty which is a key design parameter to assure the coolability of fuel assembly in the pressurized water reactor. In this work, a computer program for the evaluation of the rod bow DNBR penalty based on Westinghouse methodology is developed and its application procedure is proposed. The computer simulation is based on the Monte-Carlo method. The qualification of developed computer program is performed by a comparison of calculational result with that given by Westinghouse's document. A new application procedure is built using batch mean and batch standard deviation. The normality of sample population generated by the batch calculation is confirmed by means of a chi-square test for goodness of fit. On the view point of statistics it is effected that the more reliable design value may be produced by the new application procedure.

  • This paper presents a geometrical error analysis of wheel curve generation method for micro aspheric surface machining using parallel grinding method. In aspheric grinding, wheel wear in process is crucial parameter for profile error of the ground surface. To decrease wheel weal parallel grinding method is adopted. Wheel and work piece (Tungsten carbide) contact point changes during machining process. In truing process of the wheel radius is determined by the angle and distance between wheel and truer. Wheel radius error is predominantly affected by vertical deviation between the wheel rotation center and the truer center Simulation for vertical error and wheel radius error shows same tendency that expected by geometrical analysis. Experimental results show that the analysis of curve generation method matches with simulations and wheel radius errors.

  • A study has been made of the interaction parameters of Zn other elements in dilute solutesd solution of molten cadmium alloys over the temperature range of 450 to 570$^{\circ}C$. The experi-mental measurementss were made in a touch instant cell using a fusedd Licl-KCl electrolyte. The activity of zinc in binary and ternary solutions sexhibiteds a strong positive deviation from Raoult's law. The addition of silver, indium or lead increased the activity of zinc whereas addition of copper, bismuth or tin decreased the zinc activity slightly. The results for all the metallic solutions showed a linear dependence of reciprocal of ab-solute temperature over the experimental range. The interaction parameters obtained are as follows.

  • Published correlation equations of the enthalpy of vaporization are reviewed and a new four-parameter correlation equation is proposed. Performance of the proposed equation is examined using the ASHRAE data for 22 pure substance refrigerants as reference data. The new equation yields an average absolute deviation of $0.05\%$, which is smaller than those of published equations, such as equations of Guermouche-Vergnaund $(0.08\%)$, Aerebrot $(0.13\%)$, Radoz-Lydersen $(0.08\%)$, and Somayajulu $(0.08\%)$. The three adjustable parameters of the modified correlation are optimized and reported for 22 substances. The equation proposed in this work is valid over the entire temperature range where data points exist.

  • In this paper we design implement the speaker verification system for verifying personal identification using voice. Filter bank magnitude was used as a feature parameter and code-book was made using LBG a1gorithm. The code book convert feature parameters into code sequence. The difference between reference pattern and input pattern measures using DTW(Dynamic Time Warping). The similarity measured using DTW and threshold value derived from deviation were used to discriminate impostor from client speaker.

  • The robust controller synthesis and analysis of the water level process in the U-tube system generator (UTSG) is addressed in this paper. The parameter uncertainties of the steam generator (SG) are modeled as multiplicative perturbations which are normalized by designing suitable weighting functions. The relative errors of the nominal SG model with respect to the other operating power level models are employed to specify the weighting functions for normalizing the plant uncertainties. Then, a robust controller is designed based on ${\mu}$-synthesis and D-K iteration, and its stability robustness is verified over the whole range of power operations. A gain-scheduled controller with $H_{\infty}$-synthesis is also designed to compare its robustness with the proposed controller. The stability analysis is accomplished and compared with the previous QFT design. The ${\mu}$-analysis of the system shows that the proposed controller has a favorable stability robustness for the whole range of operating power conditions. The proposed controller response is simulated against the power level deviation in start-up and shutdown stages and compared with the other concerning controllers.

  • By far, studies on the effect of oral administration of peppermint essential oil on blood pressure are not consistent, increasing or decreasing. And the effect of inhalation of peppermint essential oil on blood pressure was not reported. This study was designed to clarify the effect of peppermint essential oil inhalation on the blood pressure and autonomic nervous system. Blood pressure and heart rate variability (HRV) as an indicator of autonomic nervous system activity were measured. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure was not changed significantly by inhalation of peppermint essential oil. Standard deviation of normal to normal (SDNN), a parameter of total activity of autonomic nervous system also was not changed significantly. High frequency (HF) power level, an indicator of parasympathetic nervous system activity was not changed by peppermint. These results indicate that action mechanism of peppermint essential oil on blood pressure is different by the method of administration, oral or inhalation.

  • Experiment on isomorphous substitution of Al by Fe in sodalite framework was carried out using dry way method at 800-900$^{\circ}$C in nitrogen atmosphere. The substitution of Fe was possible up to 25 mole% with some deviation of symmetry in sodalite cage. The cubic unit cell parameter increased with increasing Fe content. It showed ionic semiconducting property, especially the highest conductivity and the lowest activation energy in 10 mole% Fe-substituted sodalite which could behave as a superionic conductor at above 400$^{\circ}$C. When more Fe was introduced into sodalite the electronic conductivity was improved at high temperature. But the relative electronic contribution was found to be lower compared with ionic contribution at high temperature. In infrared spectra some major absorption bands of sodalite shifted to lower wave numbers due to heavier Fe atoms substitution in Al lattice sites.
