Previously, we showed that a chronic-low-dose nonylphenol (NP) exposure resulted in histological changes with sexually dimorphic pattern in rat adrenal glands. We hypothesized that such structural changes are closely related to the hormonal secretory patterns. To test this hypothesis, we developed the short-term adrenal incubation method, and measured the levels of catecholamines and cortical steroids using the high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ECD) and specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. The norepinephrine (NE) levels in media from NP-treated female adrenal, except 100 pM NP, were significantly increased [control (CTL) vs 1 nM NP, p<0.001; vs 10 nM NP, p<0.05; vs 100 nM NP, p<0.001; vs 1 µM NP, p<0.01]. The NE secretion from male adrenal was higher when treated with 100 nM and 1 µM NP (CTL vs 100 nM NP, p<0.05; vs 1 µM NP, p<0.05, respectively). The aldosterone level in the female adrenal media treated with 100 pM NP was significantly decreased, on the other hand, that of media treated with 10 nM NP was significantly increased (CTL vs 100 pM NP, p<0.05; vs 10 nM NP, p<0.01). In male adrenal media, the aldosterone levels of 10 nM, 100 nM and 1 µM NP-treated media were significantly declined (CTL vs 10 nM NP, p<0.001; vs 100 nM NP, p<0.001; vs 1 µM NP, p<0.001). These results showed the NP treatment altered secretory pattern of aldosterone from adrenals of both sexes, showing sexual dimorphism. It may be helpful for understanding possible adrenal pathophysiology, and endocrine disrupting chemicals-related sexually dimorphic phenomena in adrenals.

The purpose of this study is to provide meaningful basic materials for organizing a science curriculum in future by analyzing the status and changes of contents about astronomical phenomena in textbooks according to the changes of the science curriculum of elementary school. A main target of analysis is science textbooks of elementary school in curriculums from 1st to 7th. For the analysis, the analytic frame based on contents in astronomy textbooks of teachers colleges and colleges of education was used. The result of the analysis is as in the following. First, astronomy accounted for average about 7% of all pages of textbooks in all of science curriculums. The 1st educational curriculum had the most learning quantity of 10.40%, and the 6th curriculum had the least quantity of 4.39%. These results show that astronomy was not a small part and was considered important in each science curriculum of elementary school considering that earth science accounted for 17-26% of all pages in elementary school science curriculum. Second, the things that have been dealt with in common in all science curriculums from 1st to 7th of elementary school are the shape of the earth, the rotation and the revolution of the earth, the occurrence of the seasons, the apparent motion of the sun, the status and motion of the moon, the movement of a star, the brightness and distance of a star, constellations, the sun, planets and others. These contents are expected to be dealt with continuously as basic contents to organize astronomy regardless of the changes of curriculum. Third, in science curriculum of elementary school, astronomical phenomena based on life experiences regarding the earth, the moon and the sun are mainly dealt with in the first and the second grade. Contents requiring principles-understanding and research are dealt with in the fifth and sixth grade. These results show that elementary school science curriculum dealing with astronomy reflects the developmental stages of students and considers principle of learning possibility.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 1 is characterized by the presence of pain, which is severe, diffuse and associated with allodynia, and is also associated with autonomic and trophic changes. The sensitization phenomena of CRPS also cause allodynia and itching, as well as pain. These symptoms are the issues associated with the treatment of CRPS. Under normal conditions, an antagonistic interaction exists between the pain and itching, but the patterns of peripheral and central sensitization phenomena for the pain and itching are very similar. The chronic pain and chronic itch have similar characteristics in their developmental and therapeutical principles. Herein, our experience of 2 cases of CRPS, which showed improvement of these facial symptoms after sphenopalatine ganglion radiofrequency thermocoagulation, but were not controlled by spinal cord stimulation or other conservative treatments, is reported.
This study was carried out to examine the development of physical knowledge in children. Eighty children aged 3- to 11-year-old and 16 adults were participated in this study. Participants' knowledge about failing, sliding and sinking/floating objects was investigated to understand what kind of knowledge they had, whether their knowledge was organized as theory and what was the nature of the developmental change in physical knowledge. Results showed that, for falling object task children of all age had correct knowledge about object's falling phenomena. However, there were age differences in children's understanding of the cause of object's falling. As the children's age decreased, the frequency of explanation referring to the absence of supper rather than the gravity as the cause of falling phenomena increased. For the sliding object task, children of all age could predict the motion of sliding object correctly. But only a few 9- and 11-year-old children could understand the effect of object weight and relations between gravity, frictional force and their interactions. Children under age 7 showed no evidence of possessing these knowledge. For sinking or floating object task, children of all age and even adults showed difficulties in understanding the sinking or float phenomena per se. For the cause of these phenomena although a few 9- and 11-year-old children referred to buoyancy as the cause, they had no correct knowledge about the buoyancy. This was also true for the adults. As a conclusion, the results of this study suggested that, not 3, but as young as 5-year-old children's physical knowledge exited as a form of naive theory in terms of their use as a causal devise in explaining the cause of object motion. However, even the theory of 9- and 11-year-old children was lack of the abstractness and coherence, which were also important characteristics of a theory. Finally, developmental change in physical knowledge proceeded toward more frequent and consistent use of physical knowledge as causal device and more abstract and coherently organized theory.

Mesiodens is developmental tooth anomaly which is commonly found in clinical pediatric dentistry. however, it may cause many partial problem in tooth alignment when congenitally missing teeth was accompanied by mesiodens. The terms, concomitant hypodontia and hyperdontia' and oligo-pleiodontia' have been used to describe the condition in witch developmental absence of teeth and supernumerary teeth are present in the same individual. Only a few case reports of this rare condition which is opposite developmental phenomena exist in the literature. The purpose of this study is survey of congenitally missing teeth in mesiodens case and to compare previous literature of congenitally missing teeth in normal. The subjects were 310 children(247 male and 63 female) at the age from 5 to 12 years visiting the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Pusan National University Hospital with mesiodens for last 3 years. With their pantomograms we studied congenitally missing teeth except permanent 3rd molar. 1. The preference of congenitally missing teeth in mesiodens cases was revealed to be 17.1%(53 out of 310 in total), and there was a higher prevalence in females(22.2%) than in males(15.8%). 2. The most frequently missing teeth were maxillary lateral incisors(22.7%) and mandibular second premolars(22.7%), followed by maxillary second premolar(17.3%), and mandibular lateral incisors(16.0%). There was no significant differences between maxilla(49.3%) and mandible(50.7%). 3. In number of congenitally missing teeth per person, 69.9% had one missing tooth, 22.7% had two missing teeth and 9.4% had three missing teeth.
This study aimed to investigate the role of domain-specific causal mechanism information and domain-general conditional probability in young children's causal reasoning on psychology and biology. Participants were 121 3-year-olds and 121 4-year-olds recruited from seven childcare centers in Seoul, Kyonggi Province, and Busan. After participants watched moving pictures on psychological and biological phenomena, they were asked to choose appropriate cause and justify their choices. Results of this study were as follows: First, young children made different inferences according to domain-specific causal mechanisms. Second, the developmental level of causal mechanisms has a gap between psychology and biology, and biological knowledge was proved to be separate from psychological knowledge during the preschool period. Third, young children's causal reasoning was different depending on the interaction effect of domain-specific mechanisms and domain-general conditional probability: children could make more inferences based on domain-specific causal mechanisms if conditional probability between domain-appropriate cause and effect was evident. To conclude, it can be inferred that the role of domain-specific causal mechanisms and domain-general conditional probability is not competitive but complementary in young children's causal reasoning.
The effect of oxygen tension on embryonic development in co-culture was evaluated from the standpoint of the reduction of dissolved oxygen concentration by the oxygen consumption of feeder cells. Three co-culture systems using bovine oviductal epitherial cells (BOEC), African green monkey kidney cells (Vero cells) or buffalo rat liver cells (BRLC) have been compared in terms of development of bovine embryos derived from oocytes matured and fertilized in vitro. Among the co-cultured embryo, Vero cells su, pp.rted the highest developmental rate (29%) and the other two showed the similar rates. When the co-cultures were incubated in three different oxygen tension such as 5, 10, 20% oxygen atmosphere, embryos co-cultured with Vero cells at 10%-O2 resulted in the highest percentage of development. From the measurement of oxygen consumption of feeder cells, BRLC consumed 1.38 10-10 mg-O2/min/cell which was higher than 0.94 10-10 and 0.26 10-10mg-O2/min/cell for Vero cells and BOEC, respectively. Based on the oxygen consumption data, the phenomena of optimum oxygen tension required in embryo development in vitro has been analyzed, and we suggested that gas phase oxygen concentration, oxygen consumption rate of feeder cells and the number of feeder cells should be considered for the design of optimal co-culture system for effective fertilization of embryos in vitro.

The curriculum especially in Korea plays a crucial role in developing instructional materials. It serves as a criterion for selecting and organizing content of teaching materials. Therefore, the validity of a curriculum can be justified through testing effectiveness of an instructional material developed in accordance with the curriculum. This paper presents an instructional method and material developed based on the current tendency of educational thoughts that emphasize STS and students - centered teaching strategies in science education. The instructional material was organized around the concept and its subconcept of "nutrition" as presented in the high school biology textbooks now in use in the nation as well as in a few world-wide countries. It was also organized by the use of biological events and phenomena which high school students in rural areas can easily encounter through their everyday lives. The significant findings in this study are : ${\circ}$ The achievement levels in experimental groups were higher than one in controlled groups. ${\circ}$ The students as well as the teachers involved in this study showed positive attitude toward the instructional method developed in the process of this study. ${\circ}$ The greater part of the students among the controlled groups hoped that biology would be taught by this kind of teaching procedure and materials.
Previous studies, including our own, indicate that distinct morphological changes in rodent adrenal cortex could be induced by exposure of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC). In the present study, we conducted histological analyses of adrenocortical substructure using a nonylphenol-treated F1 rat model. The adrenal weight of NP-5000 group was significantly declined in female rats (p<0.001), while the adrenal weights of NP-treated groups were not significantly changed in male rats. The thickness of zona glomerulosa layers of female rats in NP-5000 group was significantly declined (p<0.001) but zona fasciculata layers were not changed. The zona reticularis layers of NP-treated group were significantly thinner than those of control group (NP-50, p<0.05; NP-5000, p<0.01). In male adrenal glands, there was no significant change of zona glomerulosa layers in NP-treated groups while the thickness of zona fasciculata in NP-5000 group was significantly decreased (p<0.01). Like female rats, the thickness of zona reticularis in NP-treated groups was significantly decreased (NP-50, p<0.001; NP-5000, p<0.05). Present study demonstrated that the adrenal histology could be altered by low-dose NP exposure in F1 rats, and the effect might be sexually dimorphic. Further study will be helpful for understanding possible adrenal pathophysiology induced by EDC exposure, and EDC-related sexually dimorphic phenomena in rodent adrenals.
To find the mechanism underlying the ADP-induced increase in the outward current in ovulated mouse oocytes, we examined changes in voltage-dependent currents using the whole cell voltage clamp technique and the internal perfusion technique. Eggs were collected from the oviduct of superovulated mice with PMSG and hCG. Membrane potential was held at -60 mV (or -80 mV in the case of recording $Ca^{2+}$ currents) and step depolarizations or hyperpolarizations were applied for 300 ms. By step depolarizations, outward currents comprising steady-state and time-dependent components were elicited. They were generated in response to the positive potential more than 20 mV with severe outward rectification and were blocked by external TEA, a specific $K^{+}$ channel blocker, suggesting that they be carried via $K^{+}$ channels. Internally-perused 5 mM ADP gradually increased outward $K^{+}$ currents (IK) 1 min after perfusion of ADP and reached slowly to maximum (150~170%) 5 min later over the positive potential range, implying that ADP might not be acted directly to the $K^{+}$ channels. IK were decreased by 5 mM ATP without affecting the steady-state component of outward current. In contrast to the effect of ADP and ATP on IK, both effect of ATP and ADP on inward $Ca^{2+}$ currents (ICa) could not be detected due to the continuous decrease in current amplitudes with time-lapse ("run-down" phenomena). To check if there is a G protein-involved regulation in the ionic current of mouse oocytes, 1 mM GTP was applied to the cytoplasmic side, and the outward current and inward currents were recorded. ICa was promptly increased in the presence of GTP whereas IK was not changed. from these results, it is concluded that the ATP-dependent regulation is likely linked in the ADP-induced increase in the outward $K^{+}$ current, and G protein-involved cellular signalling might affect ion channels carrying $Ca^{2+}$ and $K^{+}$ in mouse oocytes.
