  • Recently, we have witnessed the definitely negative impacts of large-scale accidents happened in such areas as atomic power plants and high-speed train systems, which result in increased fear for the potential danger. The problems appear to arise due to the deficiency in the design of large-scale complex systems. One of the causes can be attributed to the design process that does not fully reflect the safety requirements in the early stage of the system development because of the substantially increased complexity. In this paper, to enhance the systems safety an integrated process is studied, which considers simultaneously both the system design process and system safety process from the beginning of the system development. In the conceptual system design phase an integrated process model is constructed by analyzing the activities of both the system design and safety processes. As a case study example, an inner city train system is described with the application of the developed process. The computer simulation of the example case is followed by the result discussed. The results obtained in the paper are expected to be the basis for the future study where a detailed process and its associated activities can be developed.

  • IEC 62278 presents a process to implement a consistent approach to the management of reliability for railway applications. A reliability program has to be established at the outset of a project in order to manage reliability activities effectively through the life cycle. The first step of the reliability program is to evaluate reliability requirements and targets based on the system specifications. The system specifications are derived from the customer's needs. The way in which the system requirements reflect the customer's needs is strongly dependent on the characteristics of the product. In general the customer of commercial trains presents the system requirements from their needs. However, the relation between the customer and supplier is equivocal for a project to development a prototype train, and the reliability program should be different from that of an usual commercial project. This paper deals with a process to manage reliability activities for the development of a protype train based on the experiences obtained from the development of the Korea High-Speed Train: Hanvit-350.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the biology contents of elementary schools science textbooks between Korea and Japan. To this end, the organization of subject matter and the type, process and context of inquiry activities were analyzed. The findings of this study were as follows: First, the sheer number of topics presented at each grade level was considerable and the contents of science textbooks were fixed in a set form in Korea. However, the organization and development of contents were made by considering the state of things and seasons in the case of Japan. Second, the amount of inquiry activities in Korea was higher, but the relationship between concepts and inquiry activities was lower than in Japan. Third, actually conducting (or 'doing') inquiry type activities was highest in Korea, on the other hand, 'experimenting' appeared to have a higher priority in Japan. Fourth, inquiry processes of activities in each country were very similar, in that the ratio of performing an inquiry was high, and perceiving a problem or designing an inquiry was low. Fifth, the results of analyzing the inquiry contexts of activities showed that the framework of evaluating inquiry activities based on curriculum objectives should be provided in the earlier stages of science textbook development.

  • Malfunctions and failures linked to medical devices may result in significant damage for human being. Thus, in order to ensure that safety of medical device is achieved, it should be established and applied the international standard. It is required to integrate and customize activities at standards, owing to reference relationship between standards, especially, activities based safety analysis is too expensive. This paper proposes a integration process that integrate activities of development lifecycle and safety process. Additionally, we derived a guidance based on STPA for integration process. As a result, we can be performed systematically from early stage of the development and increased effectiveness of integration process by the guidance.

  • As component-based development (CBD) rapidly spread throughout the software industry, a comprehensive methodology is needed to apply it more systematically. For this purpose, a new CBD methodology named Magic & Robust Methodology Integrated III (MaRMI-III) has been developed. The purpose of this paper is to present MaRMI-III by its constituent processes and claim that it can be used to support system developers conduct CBD in a consistent manner. First, we review the CBD approach to system development and the role of CBD methodology, and then we explain the several characteristics of MaRMI-III which are considered necessary to the CBD environment. Next, we explain a process model of MaRMI-III which separates the development process from the project management process and prescribes well-ordered activities and tasks that the developer should conduct. Each phase forming the Process Model is explained in terms of its objectives and main constituent activities. Some techniques and workproducts related to each phase are also explained. Finally, to examine the usefulness of MaRMI-III, an analytical comparison with other CBD methodologies and the results of a questionnaire survey are described.

  • The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the relationships between the Boundary Spanning Activities (BSA) of project team and system performance in ERP system development projects. We could theoretically classify the BSA in the ERP development projects into five categories on the basis of existing studies on the BSA in the research fields of organization theory, new product development, and information systems development. These five categories are 'Ambassador' activities, 'Task-coordinator' activities, 'Scout' activities, 'Sentry' activities and 'Guard' activities. And the relationship between the implementation level of activities included in each category and the project performance (system usage and users' satisfaction) was hypothesized with respect to five BSA categories. In order to test the hypotheses, we conducted on/offline survey of the participants who were involved in the ERP system development projects, and received 345 valid responses. The unit of analysis was the project team, and the total number of teams that survey participants belonged to were 103 ones. The Structural Equation Model Analysis using the SMART PLS 3.0 was applied to statistically testing the hypotheses. The results showed that 10 hypotheses among 12 hypotheses could be supported. The theoretical implications of this study can be summarized as following; first, redefining and categorizing the BSA (Boundary Spanning Activities) in the ERP system development projects, secondly, deriving measurement indicators of the implementation level for each BSA category and statistically proving the validity and the reliability of them, and finally, suggesting the theoretical background of expanding the management area of ERP systems development projects. Furthermore, the practical implication of this study is that concrete BSA items which are empirically derived can be utilized as effective guidelines for successfully implementing the BSA in the process of managing the ERP system development projects.

  • Software quality is classified by quality of process and product. In experience of Quality Management, it is known that quality level of product as it depends on goodness and badness of process and organization. As a result, improvement of software process has been important subject. According as this trends, ISO 12207 is publicated as standard of software life cycle process by ISO. For UML based object oriented development process, it is necessary that we should research detailed definition of activity and task of ISO 12207 process which is added, deleted or tailored in according to organization and project characteristics. In this thesis, by according with ISO 12207 software life cycle process, UML based object oriented development process is proposed. This process is composed of 7 steps and 19 activities including development phase, activity and product to improve quality of reliability. Usefulness of object oriented process for improvement of software quality is proved at three ways, which are comparative analysis of process characteristics, SPICE process evaluation and SPICE rick analysis.
