In recent years, additive manufacturing (AM) processes have emerged as an important manufacturing technology for a multi-item small sized production to lead the 4th industrial revolution. The layer-by-layer deposition characteristics of AM process can rapidly produce physical parts with three-dimensional geometry and desired functionality in a relatively low cost environment. The goal of this paper is to investigate the applicability of AM process to appropriate technologies for developing countries. Through the review of examples of appropriate technology of the AM process, the possibility of a practical usage of the AM process for the appropriate technologies is examined. In addition, significant applications of the AM process to the appropriate technology are introduced. Finally, future issues related to production of physical parts for developing countries using the AM process are discussed from the viewpoint of the appropriate technology.
In recent years, the U.S, Japan, Europe and other developed countries are strategically developing technologies in order to prepare for paradigm shift affecting the electric power industry in a preemptive way. In particular, a chance for new business models and innovation in the electric power industry would rapidly increase with convergence of various technologies including Information and communication technologies. This study gathered up the theories and methodologies, and sorted out emerging technologies for the electric power industry with those theories. In order to find the emerging technologies, first, we identified the possible key issues of the electric power industry in the future using four mining techniques such as STEEP. Second, we drew agenda related with each key issue. Third, we organized candidates of the emerging technologies for solving the agenda and set the priority after evaluating the possibility of technical innovation and business. Finally, we selected the top fourteen of emerging technologies and assessed their feasibility. This study has a methodological significance because the emerging technologies were developed with a market-oriented approach rather than technical-push one that has been primarily used in another studies. The results of this study are able to be used in establishment of technology policy and R&D planning in the electric power industry.

Recently advanced countries are making every effort to promote the efficiency of electric power production and supply, to deal with the environmental problems, and to develop the new energy. In particular, they are driving forward to develop various technologies for electric power in mid-long term, that are technology for building infrastructure of power transportation, establishing service network for account management using electronic technologies, elevating economic productivity by innovative electronic technologies, control-ling the discharge of global warming gas, using clean efficient energy, and so forth. However, power technology of Korea lagged behind than technology of advanced countries. Also, resources for developing power technology are limited in our country. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the efficiency of R&D investment. For it, our country must compare and analyze with technologies of advanced countries which are taking competitive advantage in the main future energy. Through comparative analysis, limited R&D resources of our country must be concentrated on technologies that can secure competitive advantage from now on.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Fuel Cycle Technologies R&D program under the Office of Nuclear Energy is working to advance technologies to enhance both the existing and future fuel cycles. One thrust area is in developing enabling technologies for next generation nuclear materials management under the Materials Protection, Accounting and Control Technologies (MPACT) Campaign where advanced instrumentation, analysis and assessment methods, and security approaches are being developed under a framework of Safeguards and Security by Design. An overview of the MPACT campaign's activities and recent accomplishments is presented along with future plans.
The difficulty of securing freshwater sources is increasing with global climate change. On the other hand, seawater is less affected by climate change and regarded as a stable water source. For utilizing seawater as freshwater, seawater desalination technologies should be employed to reduce the concentration of salts. However, current desalination technologies might accelerate climate change and create problems for the ecosystem. The desalination technologies consume higher energy than conventional water treatment technologies, increase carbon footprint with high electricity use, and discharge high salinity of concentrate to the ocean. Thus, it is critical to developing green desalination technologies for sustainable desalination in the era of climate change. The energy consumption of desalination can be lowered by minimizing pump irreversibility, reducing feed salinity, and harvesting osmotic energy. Also, the carbon footprint can be reduced by employing renewable energy sources to the desalination system. Furthermore, the volume of concentrate discharge can be minimized by recovering valuable minerals from high-salinity concentrate. The future green seawater desalination can be achieved by the advancement of desalination technologies, the employment of renewable energy, and the utilization of concentrate.
This paper describes the evolutionary trajectory of the missions of public research institutes(PRIs) in Korea since 1960s and analyses the newly highlighted role of PRIs as the facilitators of regional innovation system, with questionnaire surveys and the case study of Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology(GIST). PRIs have played important roles in Korean rapid economic development by introducing and improving foreign high-technologies in 1970s and 1980s and by creating new advanced high-technologies in 1990s. In recent years, the functions as regional technology innovators have been considered important as regional innovation system has come to the center of discussion. According to the result of this study, Korean PRIs have recognized their roles relevant to regional innovation, such as developing the technologies of regional strategic industries and awakening regional innovative actors to a sense of research. Regardless of the functions as industrial technology suppliers, however, the bilateral networks between PRIs and regional industries are not revealed strong, whereas those with universities and other research institutes are relatively strong. In addition, the research cooperation of PRIs with regional innovative actors are different by where they are located. The case of GIST shows how a regional PRI operates, commercializes its academic achievement and encourages the regional transfer of the achievement systematically. Finally, this study draws some policy implications on developing regional PRIs.
Traditional wisdom on how late industrialized countries follow the technology trajectories of preceding economies is in need of reformation as these countries have attained industrial leadership in a growing number of fields. However, current understandings about these countries' development of their emerging technologies have yet to investigate the divergence of idiosyncratic technology trajectories. The aim of this paper was to explore how their knowledge production strategies in emerging technology sectors are diverging. Specifically, this research examines the changing patterns of knowledge production in quantum technology in South Korea and China by developing a knowledge portfolio and knowledge strategic diagram. According to the knowledge portfolio, the relative literature position differs. In the knowledge strategic diagram, there are diverging patterns in the emerging keywords sector. This paper contributes to the literature by demonstrating the diverging strategies of late industrialized countries in their transition from catch-up to post-catch-up paradigms and provides policy implications for countries developing an idiosyncratic trajectory in emerging technology sectors.
Southeast Asia, a typical tropical region, plays an important role in exporting a variety of fruits worldwide. The market for fresh fruits has been growing consistently, and this is a chance for Southeast Asian countries to increase their national income. However, export of tropical fruits has limitations such as a short shelf life and difficulty in maintaining the quality because of tropical climate conditions and undeveloped postharvest technologies in Southeast Asia. An important objective for developing postharvest technologies is to extend the shelf life of fresh fruits without deterioration in fruit quality. Therefore, it is essential to determine factors that affect the shelf life of fruits. The shelf life of tropical fruits is significantly dependent on the inherent properties of the fruits, extrinsic conditions, postharvest treatment, and microbial contamination. Recently, Southeast Asian countries have supported agricultural research groups for developing new postharvest technologies and minimizing postharvest losses and maintaining export fruit quality so that the total sales of tropical fruit farms can increase. This review introduces how the primary factors for extending the shelf life of tropical fruits can be determined and discusses the development of postharvest technologies for tropical fruits in Southeast Asian countries.

As various mobile technologies, sensor technologies, remote control and network infrastructure are developing and expectations on quality of life are increasing, a lot of researches and developments on home network technologies and services are actively on going. Until now, home network is just beginning, and we are developing home network services necessary to users, incrementing easiness, however we need to research on the safety of home network system guaranteeing the easiness as the services are going actively. So, in this paper, we propose the access control mechanism for protecting the home network system against indoor/outdoor illegal accesses and unauthorized accesses.
