In this paper, an integrated chaos analysis system for EEG (ICASE) is designed for the analysis of brain functions based on the chaos theory. Nonlinear dynamic characteristics of EEG such as 3-D attractor, Poincare section, correlation dimension, Lyapunov exponents and power spectrum are extracted by this system. The results show that chaotic attractors which indicate the presence of deterministic, dynamics of complex nature could be identified from a routine EEG recording for normal and pathological activity. This proves that the chaotic analysis of EEG may be an appropriate tool in the classification of brain activity and thus a possible diagnostic tool.

In Distributed Batch-processing Systems (DBSs), CPU-intensive jobs are automatically transferred and executed using idle computers across a network, there by increasing the resource usage and throughput. To be successful, the systems must guarantee the scalablility, fault-tolerance, and flexibility of dynamic configurations. In practice, however, it is very difficult to provide such capabilities in a non-deterministic environment in which the available set of resources is unpredictable because of network failures, computer failures, or voluntary withdrawal from a pool by a machine owner. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of the J-JDBS (Jini-based Java Distributed Batch-processing System) system which is based on the core Jini services like Discovery service, Lookup service, Lease service and etc. We show that the Jini core services can be very effectively used to build reliable, scalallle, fault-tolerant, and flexible DBS systems with little effort.
On the basis of the explicit time-domain method, an investigation is performed on the influence of the rotational stiffness and rotational damping of the vehicle body and front-rear bogies on the dynamic responses of the vehicle-bridge coupled systems. The equation of motion for the vehicle subsystem is derived employing rigid dynamical theories without considering the rotational stiffness and rotational damping of the vehicle body, as well as the front-rear bogies. The explicit expressions for the dynamic responses of the vehicle and bridge subsystems to contact forces are generated utilizing the explicit time-domain method. Due to the compact wheel-rail model, which reflects the compatibility requirement of the two subsystems, the explicit expression of the evolutionary statistical moment for the contact forces may be performed with relative ease. Then, the evolutionary statistical moments for the respective responses of the two subsystems can be determined. The numerical results indicate that the simplification of vehicle model has little effect on the responses of the bridge subsystem and the vehicle body, except for the responses of the rotational degrees of freedom for the vehicle subsystem, regardless of whether deterministic or random analyses are performed.
Recently, the adaptive nonlinear static analysis method has been widely used in the field of performance based earthquake engineering. However, the proposed methods are almost deterministic and cannot directly consider the seismic record uncertainties. In the current study an innovative Stochastic Adaptive Pushover Analysis, called "SAPA", based on equivalent hysteresis system responses is developed to consider the earthquake record to record uncertainties. The methodology offers a direct stochastic analysis which estimates the seismic demands of the structure in a probabilistic manner. In this procedure by using a stochastic linearization technique in each step, the equivalent hysteresis system is analyzed and the probabilistic characteristics of the result are obtained by which the lateral force pattern is extracted and the actual structure is pushed. To compare the results, three different types of analysis have been considered; conventional pushover methods, incremental dynamic analysis, IDA, and the SAPA method. The result shows an admirable accuracy in predicting the structure responses.
The problem of scheduling n jobs on a single machine is considered when the machine is subject to stochastic breakdowns. The objective is to minimize the weighted squared deviation of job completion times from a common due date. Two versions of the problem are addressed. In the first one the common due date is a given constant, whereas in the second one the common due date is a decision variable. In each case, a general form of deterministic equivalent of the stochastic scheduling problem is obtained when the counting process N(t) related to the machine uptimes is a Poisson process. It is proved that an optimal schedule must be V-shaped in terms of weighted processing time when the agreeable weight condition is satisfied. Based on the V-shape property, two dynamic programming algorithms are proposed to solve both versions of the problem.

This research work presents a study that aims to assess the dynamic structural behaviour and also investigate the human comfort levels of a reinforced concrete building, when subjected to nondeterministic wind dynamic loadings, considering the effect of masonry infills on the global stiffness of the structural model. In general, the masonry fills most of the empty areas within the structural frames of the buildings. Although these masonry infills present structural stiffness, the common practice of engineers is to adopt them as static loads, disregarding the effect of the masonry infills on the global stiffness of the structural system. This way, in this study a numerical model based on sixteen-storey reinforced concrete building with 48 m high and dimensions of $14.20m{\times}15m$ was analysed. This way, static, modal and dynamic analyses were carried out in order to simulate the structural model based on two different strategies: no masonry infills and masonry infills simulated by shell finite elements. In this investigation, the wind action is considered as a nondeterministic process with unstable properties and also random characteristics. The fluctuating parcel of the wind is decomposed into a finite number of harmonic functions proportional to the structure resonant frequency with phase angles randomly determined. The nondeterministic dynamic analysis clearly demonstrates the relevance of a more realistic numerical modelling of the masonry infills, due to the modifications on the global structural stiffness of the building. The maximum displacements and peak accelerations values were reduced when the effect of the masonry infills (structural stiffness) were considered in the dynamic analysis. Finally, it can be concluded that the human comfort evaluation of the sixteen-storey reinforced concrete building can be altered in a favourable way to design.
The optimum design of base isolation system considering model parameter uncertainty is usually performed by using the unconditional response of structure obtained by the total probability theory, as the performance index. Though, the probabilistic approach is powerful, it cannot be applied when the maximum possible ranges of variations are known and can be only modelled as uncertain but bounded type. In such cases, the interval analysis method is a viable alternative. The present study focuses on the bounded optimization of base isolation system to mitigate the seismic vibration effect of structures characterized by bounded type system parameters. With this intention in view, the conditional stochastic response quantities are obtained in random vibration framework using the state space formulation. Subsequently, with the aid of matrix perturbation theory using first order Taylor series expansion of dynamic response function and its interval extension, the vibration control problem is transformed to appropriate deterministic optimization problems correspond to a lower bound and upper bound optimum solutions. A lead rubber bearing isolating a multi-storeyed building frame is considered for numerical study to elucidate the proposed bounded optimization procedure and the optimum performance of the isolation system.

In this paper, we investigate the nonlinear dynamic behavior of TPP (thiamine pyrophosphate) riboswitches in E. coli (Escherichia coli). TPP riboswitches are highly conserved RNA regulatory elements, embedded within the 5’'untranslated region of three TPP biosynthesis operons. The three operons thiCEFSGH, thiMD, and thiBPQ are involved in the biosynthesis, salvage, and transport of TPP, respectively. TPP riboswitches modulate their expressions in response to changing TPP concentration, without involving protein cofactors. Interestingly, the expression of thiMD is regulated at the translational level, while that of thiCEFSGH at both levels of transcription and translation. We develop a mathematical model of the TPP riboswitch’s regulatory system possessed by thiCEFSGH and thiMD, so as to simulate the time-course experiments of TPP biosynthesis in E. coli. The simulation results are validated against three sets of reported experimental data in order to gain insight into the nature of steady states and the stability of TPP riboswitches, and to explain the biological significance of regulating at level of transcription or translation, or even both. Our findings suggest that in the TPP biosynthesis pathway of E. coli, the biological effect of down-regulating thiCEFSGH operon at the translational level by TPP riboswitch is less prominent than that at the transcriptional level.

It is main objective of this approach to present a method to analyse stochastic design sensitivity for problems of structural dynamics with randomness in design parameters. A combination of the adjoint variable approach and the second order perturbation method is used in the finite element approach. An alternative form of the constant functional that holds for all times is introduced to consider the time response of dynamic sensitivity. The terminal problem of the adjoint system is solved using equivalent homogeneous equations excited by initial velocities. The numerical procedures are shown to be much more efficient when based on the fold superposition method: the generalized co-ordinates are normalized and the correlated random variables are transformed to uncorrelated variables, whereas the secularities are eliminated by the fast Fourier transform of complex valued sequences. Numerical algorithms have been worked out and proved to be accurate and efficient : they can be readily adapted to fit into the existing finite element codes whose element derivative matrices can be explicitly generated. The numerical results of two cases -2 dimensional portal frame for the comparison with reference and 3-dimensional frame structure - for the deterministic sensitivity analysis are presented.

This paper presents a heuristic method for solving the discrete-time ordering problem with quantity discounts and deterministic, time-varying demand. This algorithm utilizes a variation of the incremental cost approach(ICA) to determine a near optimal solution. The ICA is the method which reduces the total cost with reduction of the number of orders by one. In order to reduce the number of orders, if the incremental cost for one of the periods is negative, the demand of the period should be purchased in its immediate preceding period. In order to test the performance of this algorithm, an experiment is conducted that involves a large number of test problems covering a wide variety of situations. The result of the experiment shows that the proposed algorithm has 80.5% better solutions than the adjusted part period algorithm(APPA), which is known to be the best heuristic method.
