  • Since the inner barrel assembly of the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 reactor vessel is a new design feature introduced instead of CEA(control element assembly) shroud assembly, the inner barrel assembly can be a significant object of structural integrity assessment. This paper covers the structural responses of top plate, which is a component of the inner barrel assembly, against the deterministic hydraulic load induced by pump pulsation and the random hydraulic load induced by turbulence of coolant. The top plate responds to the deterministic hydraulic load more than to the random hydraulic load and shows enough structural integrity. The results of this paper will be important basis for the selection of instruments and measurement location.

  • The analysis of distribution line faults is essential to the proper protection of power system. A high impedance fault(HIF) dose not make enough current to cause conventional protective device operating, so it is well known that undesirable operating conditions and certain types of faults on electric distribution feeders cannot be detected by using conventional protection system. In this paper, we prove that the nature of the high impedance faults is indeed a deterministic chaos, not a random motion. Algorithms for estimating Lyapunov spectrum and the largest Lyapunov exponent are applied to various fault currents detections in order to evaluate the orbital instability peculiar to deterministic chaos dynamically, and fractal dimensions of fault currents which represent geometrical self-similarity are calculated. Wavelet transform analysis is applied the time-scale information to fault signal. Time-scale representation of high impedance faults can detect easily and localize correctly the fault waveform.

  • In this study, an optimized deterministic water-quality model was constructed to estimate water quality of a river and lake in the upstream basin of a dam. A stochastic water-quality analysis using reliability analysis technique was applied to the model. The model was tested in the 13.9 km reach from Maeil stage station of Kyechun to Hoengsung Dam of Sum River. After finding hydraulic characteristics from nonuniform flow analysis, Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) optimization technique for model calibration was applied to determine optimum reaction parameters, and model verification was performed based on these. The stochastic model, using Mean FirstOrder Second-Moment (MFOSM) and Monte-Carlo methods, was applied to the same reach as the deterministic study. Variations of discharge and water quality in headwater were considered, as well as variations of hydraulic coefficients and reaction coefficients. The statistical results of output variables from MFOSM were similar to those from the Monte-Carlo method. Risk analysis using MFOSM and Monte-Carlo methods presented the probabilities of some locations in the Hoengsung Lake violating existing water-quality standards in terms of DO and BOD.

  • This paper provides methods for the deterministic and reliability-based design of the support pressures necessary to prevent tunnel face collapse. The deterministic method is developed by extending the use of the unique load multiplier, which is embedded within OptumG2/G3 with the intention of determining the maximum load that can be supported by a system. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional examples are presented to illustrate the applications. The obtained solutions are validated according to those derived from the existing methods. The reliability-based method is developed by incorporating the Response Surface Method and the advanced first-order second-moment reliability method into the bisection algorithm, which continuously updates the support pressure within previously determined brackets until the difference between the computed reliability index and the user-defined value is less than a specified tolerance. Two-dimensional reliability-based support pressure is compared and validated via Monte Carlo simulations, whereas the three-dimensional solution is compared with the relationship between the support pressure and the resulting reliability index provided in the existing literature. Finally, a parametric study is carried out to investigate the influences of factors on the required support pressure.

  • This paper illustrates potential applications of POM/OPM/BOR, which are used for deterministic reliability evaluation in the operation mode (operational planning and operating) in Korea Power System. Deterministic reliability evaluation in this paper bases the philosophy of the marginality and the limitation of physical quantity (voltage and thermal in main) under contingency analysis. The POM/OPM/BOR tools have been developed by V&R (Vaimann and Research) in USA. Before case studies, main frame and feature of the tools are introduced in brief. Case studies of the actual power system of Korea are demonstrated for checking the application possibility of POM/OPM/BOR.

  • The deterministic analysis method has generally used to evaluate the slope stability and it evaluates the slope stability with decision value that is a representative value of design variables. However, one of disadvantages in the deterministic approach is there is not able to consider the uncertainty of soil strength properties, even though it is the biggest influential parameter of the slope stability. On the other hand, the limit state design(LSD) can take a consideration of uncertainties and computes both the reliability index and the probability of failure. LSD method is capable of overcoming the disadvantages of deterministic method and evaluating the slope stability more reliably. In this study, both the mean value and standard deviation of the internal land's representative soil strength properties applied to process the LSD method. The major purpose of this study is to gauge the general applicability of the limit state design in soil slope and to weigh the comparative validity of the proposed partial safety factor. In order to reach the aim of this study, the partial safety factor and resistance factor which totally satisfied the slope's overall safety factor were calculated by the load and resistance safety factor design (LRFD).

  • This paper presents a design methodology for determining configurations of slider air bearings considering the randomness of the air-bearing surface (ABS) geometry by using the iSIGHT. A reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) problem is formulated to minimize the variations in the mean values of the flying heights from a target value while satisfying the desired probabilistic constraints keeping the pitch and roll angles within a suitable range. The reliability analysis is employed to estimate how the fabrication tolerances of individual slider parameters affect the final flying attitude tolerances. The proposed approach first solves the deterministic optimization problem. Then, beginning with this solution, the RBDO is continued with the reliability constraints affected by the random variables. Reliability constraints overriding the constraints of the deterministic optimization attempt to drive the design to a reliability solution with minimum increase in the objective. The simulation results of the RBDO are listed in comparison with the values of the initial design and the results of the deterministic optimization, respectively. To show the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the reliability analyses are simply carried out by using the mean value first-order second-moment (MVFO) method. The Monte Carlo simulation of the RBDO's results is also performed to estimate the efficiency of the proposed approach. Those results are demonstrated to satisfy all the desired probabilistic constraints, where the target reliability level for constraints is defined as 0.8.

  • The purpose of this study compares determinants of eldery medical cost inflation with those of other age groups by analysing aggregated data with a deterministic model. The deterministic model of per capita medical cost inflation consists of increases in price, intensity of services, and medical utilization. We used a time series data($1985{\sim}1991$) from National Medical Insurance and analyzed by age groups. In total population, the average increase rates of inpatient and outpatient medical costs were respectively 9.5% and 8.8% during 6 years and the major cause of inflation was the increase in service intensity in both of inpatient and outpatient cases. But in the population of 65 years old and over, the average increase rates of inpatient and outpatient medical costs were respectively 13.8% and 14.8% and the major cause of inflation was the increase in per-capita medical utilization in both of inpatient and outpatient cases. Also, the increase in service intensity of 65 years old and over was the highest of other age groups. This pattern was similar during study periods. We concluded that the level of medical cost-inflation and the determinants in eldery was the highest-especially in per capita medical utilization, therfore, the inflation of medical costs in eldery will be higher than other age groups for the furture in Korea.
