This study was performed to investigate the effect of washing with water and detergent on the vitamin C content in strawberry and perilla leaf. Vitamin C was extracted with the solution of metaphosphoric acid and quantitated by high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC). There was no significant difference of vitamin C content between the washing with distilled water and tap water. Three available detergents reduced the vitamin C content of samples to 92.5%, 92.2% and 78.5%, respectively. The content of vitamin C in samples was decreased by increasing the concentration of detergent and washing time.
Detergent-degrading bacteria isolated from the Han River downstream running through the center of Seoul area were identified. Samples were monthly taken from the surface waters at four designated sites from October, 1980 to August, 1981. Isolated strains were characteristically Gram-negative bacteria in all, and they were classified within 18 genera, 43 spceies. The dominant strains of detergent -degrading bacteria were within geneus Pseudomonas. On the regional distribution of detergent-degrading bacteria, Euterobacteriaceae and genus Aeromonas were suddenly increased at the Third Bridge of site 2 and the First Bridge of site 3, and others were almost the same regardless of sites.
To utilize the alkaline protease produced by Halomonas sp. ES-10 as an enzyme detergent, the crude enzyme was obtained by methanol precipitation and lyophilization. And it was processed to coated enzyme. The best mixing ratio of components such as coated enzyme, builders, actives, fillers and adjuvants on detergency was examined, and temperature and pH influencing detergency were also tested. Detergency test 0.15% detergent solution was carried out on EMPA test cloth #116 with shaking(90 rpm) for 10 min after 30 min of pretreatment. The detergent which contained coated-enzyme 1%, Zeolite 4A 20%, Tween 80 1. 5%, sodium borate 30%, sodium meta silicate 7.5% and water 40% showed about 90% of washing efficiency at 40$\circ $C and pH 10.0.
The distribution and annual variation of detergent-degrading bacteria which were isolated from the Han River downstream running through the center of Seoul area were studied. The concentration of dissolved detergent was the lowest, 2.16 ppm at site 1 and it was gradually increased to downstream, the highest, 2.67 ppm at site 4. Population density of detergent degrading bacteria was about $10^2{\sim}10^3 cells/ml$. The density of LAS degrading bacteria was 1.1 - 1.8 times larger than that of SDBS-degrading bacteria. In annual variation the lowest density was appeared on January and the highest on July. In seasonal distribution of LAS-degrading bacteria, annual dominant group was genus Pseudomonas. There were few except genus Pseudomonas in winter and the subdomiannt group in spring and summer was genus Aeromonas and Enterobacteriaceae respectively. In autumn genus Pseudomonas, Aeromonas and Enterobacteriaceae were equally distributed. In SDBS-degrading bacteria, the annual dominant group was also genus Pseudomonas.
According to consumer's washing behavior, the washing efficiency of three different types of washing machines-pulsator, agitator, and drum was studied. Their detergency, rinsing efficiency, and the degree of fabric damage, tangle, and wrinkle were evaluated. The results showed that efficient washing capacity was different from the specified capacity of washing machine. Detergency and rinsing efficiency frere apparently decreased when more than 50% of capacity was loaded in washing machine of pulsator type, and 80% for agitator or drum types. They were also affected by detergent adding methods, and decreased in the order of water-detergent-washing load> washing load-detergent-water> washing load-water-detergent. Rinsing efficiency was significantly improved when the rinsing temperature was set above washing temperature. In addition, it was revealed that detergency, fabric damage, wrinkle, and tangle were highly correlated. The relationships between detergency and tangle were different for different types of washing machine. Positive relationships were found for agitator and drum types, whereas negative for pulsator type.
This study investigated the effects of the alkaline detergent and acid rinse used for cleaning milking machines on the eight commercially available teatcup liner materials. The sample liners prepared for use in the clean-in-place process were analyzed by ultraviolet spectrophotometer, ion chromatography and liquid chromatography. Among the eight liner materials, the ultraviolet spectra of 3 sample liners were shown to have a similar peak shape after cleaning, but the ultraviolet spectra peak shape of 5 sample liners was noticeably changed. No products were detected by ion chromatography in any of the liner materials used in this study. When the liner materials were only treated with alkaline detergent, some additional peaks were observed using liquid chromatography which indicate the creation of molecular substance and elution from liner materials, however, these peaks disappeared when the liner materials were cleaned with the acid rinse. Therefore, we propose that an acid rinse should be applied, after cleaning the milking machine with the alkaline detergent.
As the result of the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the surfactant mixture, the main surfactant of the fast biodegradable detergent which were derived from vegetable oil was Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. The Detergents contained sodium lauryl sulfate, nonionic surfactant, soap, etc, as the rest sufactants. Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate and ${alpha}-Olefin$ Sulfonate which were derived from petroleum were not detected. The biodegradation rate of the detergent prepared from vegetable oil was faster than that of the detergent derived from petroleum stood in 7 days.
During cosmetic treatments, SURFACTANTS penetrate into KERATINOUS TISSUES (hair, skin and nails). Whereas some of these surfactant molecules migrate to the vital tissues, a considerable fraction remains bound to the keratin. The extent of binding depends both on the nature of the head group and the length of the hydrophobic tail of the detergent molecules. In addition to entering the amorphous region of the keratin, some of the detergents also penetrate into the crystalline microfibrils and change their structures affecting their tensile properties. Owing to an uneven distribution of detergent molecules in the tissues, an anisotropy of the elastic moduli will occur, resulting in considerable internal stresses which, in rum, might lead to a deterioration of hair, skin and nails. The chemical behavior of keratins is also influenced by the presence of absorbed detergent in their structures. Depending on the detergents and the conditions, these effects can be either protective or detrimental. The deposition of detergent molecules into keratin can be enhanced or diminished by the inclusion of appropriate ingredients into the product formulae.
Nowadays, Korean consumers prefer drum-type washing machines to pulsator-type washers. Washing is a complex process involving the interaction of numerous physical and chemical influences. The main factors in the washing operations are the washing chemistry of the detergent along with the mechanical input, the wash temperature, and the time provided by the washing machine. Heavy-duty detergents that are used in drum-type washing machines contain different components from those used in vertical-axis washing machines. The bath ratio and the mechanical actions to which laundry is subjected are different between the drum-type and the vertical-axis washing machines. In this study we examined the effects of wash temperature, wash time, detergent concentration, and revolution speed on the removal of soils from artificially soiled cloths in a drum-type washing machine with heavy-duty commercial detergent. We used multiple regression analyses to find the relative importance of the factors and the optimum washing conditions. The results of these experiments showed that the washing temperature was the most important factor in the effective removal of most soils. This was followed by the washing time, the detergent concentration, and finally the revolution speed. In this study it was found that superfluous amounts of detergent did not sufficiently increase the soil removal rate. Koreans who are used to washing with cold water should increase the wash time to launder more efficiently.
