  • The purpose of this study is to compare the quality of digital radiography image with that of classical film images for welded structure in power plants. The CMOS(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) flat panel detecter and Agfa D5 film are used to image flaw specimens respectively. In the test, CMOS flat panel detector has been determined to have a better image than that of film image. In the IQI(Image Quality Indicator) transmission test, one or two more line can be seen in digital image than in film image. Digital Radiography Test enabled to successfully detect all defects on the weld specimens fabricated with real reheat stem pipe and boiler tube as well. In the specific comparison test, Digital radiography test detected micro flaws in the size of 0.5 mm in length by 0.5 mm in depth. However, film test has limited it to 1.0 mm in length by 1.0 mm in depth. As a result of this study, digital radiography technology is estimated well enough to perform the inspection in the industry with far more cost effective way, compared to the classical film test.

  • In the measurement using DMA and CPC in series, there is some time delay for particles classified in DMA to detect in CPC. During this time, the DMA time-response changes due to the velocity profile of sampling tube and the diffusion of particles in the volume that exists between the DMA exit and the detector of ultra-fine CPC. This is called mixing effect. In the accelerated measurement methods like the TSI -SMPS, the size distribution is obtained from the correlation between the time-varying electrical potential of the DMA and the corresponding particle concentrations sampled in DMA. If the DMA time -response changes during this delay time, this can cause the error of a size distribution measured by this accelerated technique. The kernel function considering this mixing effect using the residence time distribution is proposed by Russell et al. In this study, we obtained a size distribution using this kernel to compare to the result obtained by the commercial accelerated measurement system, TSI -SMPS for verification and considered the errors that result from the mixing effect with the geometric mean diameters of originally sampled particles, using virtually calculated responses obtained with this kernel as input data.

  • Objectives: Lung cancer occurred with worker working in an urban bus garage. A survey was conducted to investigate whether lung cancer had causal relationship with work. Exposure to asbestos and diesel engine exhaust were suspected. Methods: Airborne asbestos was sampled on membrane filter and analyzed using phase-contrast microscopy. Airborne diesel exhaust was sampled using quartz filter and analyzed with thermal-optical analyzer. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons was sampled using PTFE filter and XAD-2 tube and analyzed with gas chromatography-mass selective detector. Results: Airborne asbestos concentration was under 0.01 fiber/cc. Worker who warmed up an engine of urban bus for 2 hours was exposed to elemental carbon concentration, $15.5{\mu}g/m^3$. Only naphtalene among polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons was detected. Conclusions: It was difficult to conclude about worker exposure to asbestos because working hour related asbestos was too short. In reviewing papers, the exposure to asbestos over 0.01 fiber/cc during exchange brake lining was found. It was identified that worker's occupational exposure to diesel exhaust based on elemental carbon was higher than the other occupational exposure to diesel exhaust.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate desorption efficiency and storage stability on activated carbon acquired form domestic market. Materials: Mixture of acetone, benzene, normal hexane and toluene was injected on four types of charcoal 100 mg. After overnight, charcoal was desorbed by carbon disulfide $1m{\ell}$ and analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector. Results: Desorption efficiency of benzene, normal hexane and toluene in charcoal tubes were 95% ~ 105%. But desorption efficiency of acetone in charcoal tubes was below 75% and different from types of charcoal. The more injected amount of acetone on charcoal showed higher desorption efficiency. Acetone injected on charcoal tubes migrated from front section into back section after 10 days storage at room temperature. Conclusions: Desorption efficiency and storage stability of activated carbon acquired from domestic market was good for benzene, normal hexane and toluene. The activated carbon acquired from domestic market has ability to be used as sampling media.

  • A high performance liquid chromatography using photoreduction fluorescence detection was described for the analysis of saikosaponins. Saikosaponins were separated on an $NH_2$ column using acetonitrile and aqueous 2-tert-butylanthraquinone(t-BAQ) as mobile phase. Column effluent was passed through a 40cm PTFE capillary tube coiled around a 10W UV lamp to reduce t-BAQ to a highly fluorescent dihydroxyanthracene derivative which was detected by a fluorescence detector. The optimal concentration of t-BAQ was found to be $6{\times}10^{-5}M$ and the optimal reaction time to be 2 seconds. The detection limit for saikosaponin a and d by this method was found to be about 280ng and 80ng. The dynamic linear range was over two orders and the correlation coefficient of the calibration curve of them was 0.998.

  • We measured the absorbed dose and the area dose using an ionization chamber type of area dose product (DAP) meter and measured the calibration factor in the X-ray examination. In the indirect dose measurement method, the detector was installed in the radiation part of the X-ray equipment, and the measured value was calculated as the dose at the exposure part. The instrument used to calculate the calibration factor was an X-ray equipment (DK-550R / F, DongKang Medical Co., Ltd., Seoul, Korea). The calibration method for the calibration factor was to connect the DAP meter (PD-8100, Toreck Co. Ltd., Japan) to the calibration dosimeter tube voltage of 70 kV, tube current of 500 mA, 0.158 sec. The reference dosimeter used a semiconductor (DOSIMAX plus A, Scanditronix, $Wellh{\ddot{o}}fer$, Germany). After installing the DAP meter on the front of the multi-collimator of the ionization chamber, the calibration factor of the dosimeter was obtained using the reference dosimeter for accurate dose measurement. Experimental exposure values and values from the calibration dosimeter were calculated by multiplying each calibration factor. The calibration factor was calculated as 1.045. In order to calculate the calibration coefficient according to the tube voltage in the ionization type DAP dosimeter, the absorbed dose and the area dose were calculated and the calibration factor was calculated. The corrective area dose was calculated by calculating the calibration factor of the DAP meter.

  • Recently, Glass Dosimeter (GD) with thermoluminescent Dosimeter (TLD) are comprehensively used to measure absorbed dose from diagnostic field to therapy field that means from low energy field to high energy field. However, such studies about dose characteristics of GD, such as reproducibility and energy dependency, are mostly results in high energy field. Because characteristic study for measurement devices of radiation dose and radiation detector is performed using 137Cs and 60Co which emit high energy radiations. Thus, this study was evaluated the linearity according to Piranha dose which measured by changing tube voltage (50kV, 80kV and 100kV which are low energy radiations), reproducibility and reproducibility according to delay time using GD. Measurement of radiation dose is performed using internal detector of Piranha 657 which is multi-function QA device (RTI Electronic, Sweden). Condition of measurement was 25mA, 0.02sec, 2.5mAs, SSD of 100 cm and exposure area with $10{\times}10cm^2$. As above method, GD was exposed to radiation. Sixty GDs were divided into three groups (50kV, 80kV, 100kV), then measured. In this study, GD was indicated the linearity in low energy field as high energy existing reported results. The reproducibility and reproducibility according to delay time were acceptable. In this study, we could know that GD can be used to not only measure the high energy field but also low energy field.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of various technical parameters for the dose optimization in pediatric chest radiological examinations by evaluating effective dose and effective detective quantum efficiency (eDQE) including the scatter radiation from the object, the blur caused by the focal spot, geometric magnification and detector characteristics. For the tube voltages ranging from 40 to 90 kVp in 10 kVp increments at the FDD of 100, 110, 120, 150, 180 cm, the eDQE was evaluated at the same effective dose. The results showed that the eDQE was largest at 60 kVp when compares the eDQE at different tube voltage. Especially, the eDQE was considerably higher without the use of an anti-scatter grid on equivalent effective dose. This indicates that the reducing the scatter radiation did not compensate for the loss of absorbed effective photons in the grid. When the grid is not used the eDQE increased with increasing FDD because of the greater effective modulation transfer function (eMTF). However, most of major hospitals in Korea employed a short FDD of 100 cm with an anti-scatter grid for the chest radiological examination of a 15 month old infant. As a result, the entrance surface air kerma (ESAK) values for the hospitals of this survey exceeded the Korean DRL (diagnostic reference level) of $100{\mu}Gy$. Therefore, appropriate technical parameters should be established to perform pediatric chest examinations on children of different ages. The results of this study may serve as a baseline to establish detailed reference level of pediatric dose for different ages.

  • We studied optical behavior of scintillation light generated in NaI(TI) crystal using Monte Carlo simulation method. The simulation was performed for the model of NaI(TI) scintillator (size: 60 mm ${\times}$ 60 mm ${\times}$ 6 mm) using an optical tracking code. The sensitivity as a function of surface treatment (Ground, Polished, Metal-0.95RC, Polished-0.98RC, Painted- 0.98RC) of the incident surface of the scintillator was compared. The effects of NaI(TI) scintillator thickness and the refractive index of light guide optically coupling between the NaI(TI) scintillator and photomultiplier tube (PMT) were simulated. We also evaluated intrinsic position resolution of the system by calculating the spread of scintillation light generated. The sensitivities of the system having the surface treatment of Ground, Polished, Metal-0.95RC, Polished-0.98RC and Painted-0.98RC were 70.9%, 73.9%, 78.6%, 80.1% and 85.2%, respectively, and the surface treatment of Painted-0.98RC allowed the highest sensitivity. As increasing the thickness of scintillation crystal and light guide, the sensitivity of the system was decreased. As the refractive index of light guide increases, the sensitivity was increased. The intrinsic position resolution of the system was estimated to be 1.2 mm in horizontal and vertical directions. In this study, the performance of NaI(TI)-PMT detector system was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. Based on the results, we concluded that the NaI(TI)-PMT detector array is a favorable configuration for small gamma camera imaging breast tumor using Tc-99m labeled radiopharmaceuticals.
