  • Recently, a new sintered pellet-type LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si TL detector which has a high sensitivity and good reusability, named KLT-300(KAERI LiF:Mg,Cu,Na,Si TL detector), was developed by the variation of the dopants concentrations and the parameters of the preparation procedure at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). In this study, the thermoluminescent characteristics of the newly developed TL detectors were investigated. The sensitivity of the TL detector was compared with that of the TLD-100 by light integration. The dose linearity of the detector was tested from $10^{-6}$ Gy up to 30 Gy. The dose response was very linear up to 10 Gy and a sublinear response was observed at higher doses. The energy response of the detector was studied for photon energies from 20 keV to 662 keV. The result shows that a maximum response of 1.004 at 53 keV and a minimum response of 0.825 at 20 keV were observed. The reproducibility study for the TL detector was also carried out. The coefficients of variation for each detector separately did not exceed 0.016, and for all the 10 detectors collectively was 0.0054. Lower limit of detection for the detector was investigated at 70 nGy by the Harshaw 4500 TLD Reader and the residual signal of the TL detector was found to be $0.57\%$.

  • Small animal PET using a dual layer phoswich detector has been developed to obtain high and uniform spatial resolution. In this study, a simple analytic model to optimize the lengths of a dual layer phoswich detector was derived and validated by Monte Carlo simulation. For a small animal PET scanner with a 10㎝ ring diameter, the optimal length of the phoswich detector consisting of various crystal materials, such as LSO and LuYAP, were calculated analytically and validated using GATE. The detector module consisted of 8×8 arrays of crystals, with each phoswich detector element having a 2㎜×2㎜ sensitive area. The total crystal length was fixed to 20㎜. The optimal lengths of the phoswich detector layers, as functions of the crystal materials and order, conveniently derived by the analytic equation, showed good agreement with those estimated by the time consuming simulation. The simple analytical model can be used for the fast and accurate design of an optimal phoswich detector for small animal PET to achieve high spatial resolution and uniformity.

  • Due to the importance of vehicle detector which plays an essential role in generating real-life traffic information, maintaining detector data quality is preeminent in advanced traffic management and information systems (ATMIS). To this end, agencies periodically conduct performance tests on detectors. Detector evaluation is generally performed by comparing baseline data with corresponding detector data. Here, two important things need to be addressed; one is errors (or uncertainties) included in baseline data and the other is the confidence interval concept to represent evaluation results of sample data to corresponding ones of population. To resolve these problems, a new detector evaluation scheme is introduced and the scheme is applied to individual level detector evaluations of loop, video image, and radar detectors. The purpose of individual level evaluation is to eliminate the balancing (or cancelling-out) effects of over- and under-counts. As a consequence, the proposed scheme is proven to be effectively applied to real-world detector evaluations.

  • This study was performed to analyze the purity of technical grade ${\alpha}$-naphthylamine, to establish optimal analytical condition of ${\alpha}$-naphthylamine in urine and to determine the urine sample of workers exposed to ${\alpha}$-naphthylamine. The purity of technical grade ${\alpha}$-naphthylamine were $96.5{\pm}2.38%$, $94.1{\pm}0.97%$, $97.0{\pm}0.02%$ by gas chromatography-mass selective detector. To analyze ${\alpha}$-naphthylamine in urine, high performance liquid chromatography-electrochemical detector and gas chromatography-electron capture detector operating conditions have been optimized by preliminary expriment. In high performance liquid chromatography-electrochemical detector, the mobile phase was consisted of acetonitrile(35%) and water(65%), and the flow rate was maintained at 1.0ml per minute. Optimal detective condition was 9.0V(10nA/V) of electrochemical detector. The recovery of sep-pak treatment method was highly estimated as pretreatment of ${\alpha}$-naphthylamine in urine. The free amine was isolated by gas chromatography-electron capture detector after basic hydrosis, sep-pak treatment, toluene elution and HFBA(heptafluoro-butyric anhydride) derivatization of urine. The recovery of ${\alpha}$-naphthylamine in urine was $98.73{\pm}3.29%$ by gas chromatography-electron capture detector. The sensitivity was more higher than that of high performance liquid chromatography-electrochemical detector. Urinary ${\alpha}$-naphthylamine was detected in only one worker among nine workers. The level of ${\alpha}$-naphthylamine in urine was 6.42 ng/ml.

  • A Compensation-type fire detector (CFD) is operated with two functions of a differential-temperature detector and as a fixed-temperature detector. The differential-temperature detector observes a rate of temperature increase, and the fixed-temperature detector measures a given fixed temperature. The differential-temperature detector does not observe the outbreak of fire in slowly increasing temperature conditions, whereas the fixed-temperature detector is not able to observe the outbreak of fire in conditions under predetermined temperature level. We developed a CFD to compensate for weaknesses of both detectors. To compensate for the disadvantages, a sensor of the sensor metal-insulator-transition critical-temperature sensor was used. Temperature coefficient of resistance is the sensitivity for sensor. At $55^{\circ}C$, temperature coefficient of resistance of metal-insulator-transition critical-temperature sensor was 14.15%. Temperature coefficient of resistance of thermistor was about 0.5%. This CFD was operated as two ways that fixed-temperature detector and differential-temperature detector in one sensor.

  • This paper presents a simulation model of the Quadrature detector to demodulate FSK signal, which is widely used in wireless paging system for its simple hardware implementation and economics of It fabrication. Quadrature detecter has nonlinear phase characteristic for changes linear changes of input signal frequency. So until now Quadrature detector system analysis remained a difficult problem and performance analysis has not been carried out adequately On these backgrounds, this paper presents the FSK signal demodulation process using Quadrature detector and optimal performance derived from digital simulation technique. First, PSN(Phase Shift Network) which is composed of analog RLC tank circuit is transformed into its equivalent digital transfer function using First-order-hold theorem. Though the demodulated outputs of the Quadrature detector for 4FSK are 4-level signals, only 2 comparators are used and it is shown that optimal performance can be obtained by choosing operation parameter Q value and threshold level decision which are proposed herein.

  • Background: To prevent small leakage accidents, a real-time and direct detection system for small leaks with a detection limit below that of existing systems, e.g. $0.5gpm{\cdot}hr^{-1}$, is required. In this study, a small-size beta detector, which can be installed inside the reactor containment (CT) building and detect small leaks directly, was suggested and its feasibility was evaluated using MCNPX simulation. Materials and Methods: A target nuclide was selected through analysis of radiation from radionuclides in the reactor coolant system (RCS) and the spectrum was obtained via a silicon detector simulated in MCNPX. A window was designed to reduce the background signal caused by other nuclides. The sensitivity of the detector was also estimated, and its shielding designed for installation inside the reactor CT. Results and Discussion: The beta and gamma spectrum of the silicon detector showed a negligible gamma signal but it also contained an undesired peak at 0.22 MeV due to other nuclides, not the $^{16}N$ target nuclide. Window to remove the peak was derived as 0.4 mm for beryllium. The sensitivity of silicon beta detector with a beryllium window of 1.7 mm thickness was derived as $5.172{\times}10^{-6}{\mu}Ci{\cdot}cc^{-1}$. In addition, the specification of the shielding was evaluated through simulations, and the results showed that the integrity of the silicon detector can be maintained with lead shielding of 3 cm (<15 kg). This is a very small amount compared to the specifications of the lead shielding (600 kg) required for installation of $^{16}N$ gamma detector in inside reactor CT, it was determined that beta detector would have a distinct advantage in terms of miniaturization. Conclusion: The feasibility of the beta detector was evaluated for installation inside the reactor CT to detect small leaks below $0.5gpm{\cdot}hr^{-1}$. In future, the design will be optimized on specific data.

  • The nature of the signals collected by an SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) in order to form images are all dependent on the detector used to collect them, and the quality of an acquired image is strongly influenced by detector performance. Therefore, the development of detector with high performance is very important in pulling up the resolution of SEM. In this article, electron beam-specimen interactions, the detection principle of secondary electrons and backscattered electrons, and the structure of a conventional detector are described. The structure of an experimental apparatus for the future study on our hopeful novel electron detector is presented as well.

  • Zero-Cross Detector makes pilot signal to control the power to CEDM(Control Element Drive Mechanism). Existing Zero-Cross Detectors has had a problem which can cause unexpected reactor trip resulted from fluctuating frequency of input signal coming from M/G Set. The existing Zero-Cross Detector can't work properly when power frequency is varying because it was designed to work under stable M/G Set operation, and produces wrong pilot signal and output voltage. In this report the Zero-Cross Detector is improved to resolve voltage fluctuating problem by using new devices such as digital noise filtering circuit, variable cycle compensator and alarm circuit. And through the performance verification it shows that new circuit is better than old one. If suggested detector is applied to plant, it is possible to use it under House Load Operation because stable voltage can be generated by new Zero-Cross Detector.
