As one of the most important parameters in structural health monitoring, structural frequency has many advantages, such as convenient to be measured, high precision, and insensitive to noise. In addition, frequency-change-ratio based method had been validated to have the ability to identify the damage occurrence and location. However, building a precise enough finite elemental model (FEM) for the test structure is still a huge challenge for this frequency-change-ratio based damage detection technique. In order to overcome this disadvantage and extend the application for frequencies in structural health monitoring area, a novel method was developed in this paper by combining the cross-model cross-mode (CMCM) model updating algorithm with the frequency-change-ratio based method. At first, assuming the physical parameters, including the element mass and stiffness, of the test structure had been known with a certain value, then an initial to-be-updated model with these assumed parameters was constructed according to the typical mass and stiffness distribution characteristic of shear buildings. After that, this to-be-updated model was updated using CMCM algorithm by combining with the measured frequencies of the actual structure when no damage was introduced. Thus, this updated model was regarded as a representation of the FEM model of actual structure, because their modal information were almost the same. Finally, based on this updated model, the frequency-change-ratio based method can be further proceed to realize the damage detection and localization. In order to verify the effectiveness of the developed method, a four-level shear building was numerically simulated and two actual shear structures, including a three-level shear model and an eight-story frame, were experimentally test in laboratory, and all the test results demonstrate that the developed method can identify the structural damage occurrence and location effectively, even only very limited modal frequencies of the test structure were provided.
In this paper, we propose a novel approach to improve the performance of a voice activity detection(VAD) which is based on the adaptive band-partitioning with the likelihood ratio(LR). The previous method based on the adaptive band-partitioning use the weights that are derived from the variance of the spectral. In our VAD algorithm, the weights are derived from LR, and then the weights are incorporated with the entropy. The proposed algorithm discriminates the voice activity by comparing the weighted entropy with the adaptive threshold. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm yields better results compared to the conventional VAD algorithms. Especially, the proposed algorithm shows superior improvement in non-stationary noise environments.
In this paper we detect edges using stutistical methods of the change-point problem. For this, we perform the hypothesis testing for differences in gray levels to see whether any $n\timesn$ subimage contains edge segments. The proposed method based on the twosample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is introduced and the likelihood ratio test and the \VolfeSchechtman test for change-point problem arc also applied for edge detection. \Ve perform the experimental study to assess the performance of these methods in both noisy and uncontaminated sample noises.

In the phase locked AM signal detection, phase locked loop is used to extract a synchronous carrier from an input AM signal. Under the assumption that input noise is white Gaussian and free-running frequency of voltage controlled oscillator is the same that of an input carrier, operational behaviours of phase locked loop is analyzed and signal to noise ratio of the detection is derived quentitatively. The results show that the phase locked AM signal detection method offers a higher degree of noise mmunity than conventional AM signal detections.
Because existing reactant coolant system (RCS) leakage detection mechanisms are insensitive to small leaks, a real-time, direct detection system with a detection threshold below 0.5 gpm·hr-1 was studied. A beta-ray detection system using a silicon detector with good energy resolution for beta rays and a low gamma-ray response was proposed. The detection performance in the leakage condition was evaluated through experiments and simulations. The concentration of 16N in the coolant corresponding to a coolant leakage of 0.5 gpm was calculated using the analytic method and ORIGEN-ARP. Based on the concentration of 16N and the measurement of the silicon detector with 90Sr/90Y, the beta-ray count rate was estimated using MCNPX. To evaluate the effect of gamma rays inside the containment building, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was calculated. To evaluate the count rate ratio, the radiation field inside the containment building was simulated using MCNPX, and response evaluation experiments were performed using beta and gamma rays on the silicon detector. The expected beta-ray count rate at 0.5 gpm leakage was 7.26 × 105 counts/sec, and the signal-to-background count rate ratio exceeded 88 for a transport time of 10 s, demonstrating its suitability for operation inside a reactor containment building.

Here we present a simple flame detection method for an infrared (IR) thermal camera based real-time fire surveillance digital signal processor (DSP) system. Infrared thermal cameras are especially advantageous for unattended fire surveillance. All-weather monitoring is possible, regardless of illumination and climate conditions, and the data quantity to be processed is one-third that of color videos. Conventional IR camera-based fire detection methods used mainly pixel-based temporal correlation functions. In the temporal correlation function-based methods, temporal changes in pixel intensity generated by the irregular motion and spreading of the flame pixels are measured using correlation functions. The correlation values of non-flame regions are uniform, but the flame regions have irregular temporal correlation values. To satisfy the requirement of early detection, all fire detection techniques should be practically applied within a very short period of time. The conventional pixel-based correlation function is computationally intensive. In this paper, we propose an IR camera-based simple flame detection algorithm optimized with a compact embedded DSP system to achieve early detection. To reduce the computational load, block-based calculations are used to select the candidate flame region and measure the temporal motion of flames. These functions are used together to obtain the early flame detection algorithm. The proposed simple algorithm was tested to verify the required function and performance in real-time using IR test videos and a real-time DSP system. The findings indicated that the system detected the flames within 5 to 20 seconds, and had a correct flame detection ratio of 100% with an acceptable false detection ratio in video sequence level.

In this study, we have developed a prototype of the automatic defects detection system for capsule inspection using the computer vision techniques. The subjects for inspection are empty hard capsules of various sizes which are made of gelatine. To inspect both sides of a capsule, 2-stage recognition is performed. Features we have used are various lengths of a capsule, area, linearity, symmetricity, head curvature and so on. Decision making is performed based on average value which is computed from 20 good capsules in training and permission bounds in factories. Most of time-consuming process for feature extraction is computed by hardware to meet the inspection speed of more than 20 capsules/sec. The main logic for control and arithmetic computation is implemented using EPLD for the sake of easy change of design and reduction in time for developement. As a result of experiment, defects on size or contour of binary images are detected over 95%. Because of dead zone in imaging system, detection ratio of defects on surface, such as bad joint, chip, speck, etc, is lower than the former case. In this case, detection ratio is 50-85%. Defects such as collet pinch and mashed cap/body seldom appear in binary image, and detection ratio is very low. So we have to process the gray-level image directly in partial region.
A study is performed for the effective detection method of a fault which is occurred during operation in a small turbojet engine with non-linear characteristics used by unmanned air vehicle. For this study the non-linear dynamic model of the engine is derived from transient thermodynamic cycle analysis. Also for inducing real operation conditions the controller is developed associated with unscented Kalman filter to estimate noises. Sequential probability ratio test is introduced as a real time method to detect a fault which is manipulated for simulation as a malfunction of rotational speed sensor contaminated by large amount of noise. The method applied to the fault detection during operation verifies its effectiveness and high feasibility by showing good and definite decision performances of the fault.

The effect of cationization agent concentration on glycan detection via matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) was investigated using $Na^+$ ions in the form of NaCl as the cationization agent. NaCl solution concentrations ranging from 1 mM to 1 M were investigated. Glycans from ovalbumin were mixed with the cationization agent solution and the 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,5-DHB) matrix solution in a volume ratio of 1:1:1. The resulting mixture was loaded onto the MALDI plate. Two MALDI-TOF MS instruments (Voyager DE-STR MALDI-TOF MS and Tinkerbell RT MALDI-TOF MS) were used for detection of glycans. The best detection, in terms of the number of identified glycans, the peak intensity, and the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, was obtained with NaCl concentrations of 0.01-0.1 M for both MALDI-TOF MS instruments.

In this paper, a high impedance fault detection on 22.9kV multigrounded distribution system that has been very difficult by any existing conventional protective relaying systems is studied. Because the fault current is very low, it cannot be distinguished from neutral current caused by load unvalanced on multigrounded distribution system. We developed the new and best algorithms of high impedance ground fault detection. This algorithms are 'the even order power method, even order ratio method', 'and even order ratio varience method'. Using this algorithms, a detection device for high impedance faults is constructed and tested in the laboratory. And continually, it is installed and has been tested in KEPCO substations.
