  • This paper suggests a method of detecting traffic lights for vehicles by combining the HSV(hue saturation value) color model, morphometric characteristics, and location information appearing on consecutive images in daytime. In order to detect the traffic light, the color corresponding to the signal lights should be explored. It is difficult to detect traffic lights among colors of lights from buildings, taillight of cars, leaves, placards, etc. The proposed algorithm searches for the traffic lights from many candidates using morphometric characteristics and location information in consecutive images. The recognition process is divided into three steps. The first step is to detect candidates after converting RGB channel into HSV color model. The second step is to extract the boundaries between the housing of traffic lights and background by exploiting the assumption that the housing has lower brightness than the surrounding background. The last step is to recognize the signal light after eliminating the false candidates using morphometric characteristics and location information appearing on consecutive images. This paper demonstrates successful detection results of traffic lights from various images captured on the city roads.

  • Recently, many frequency sharing technology including CR (Cognitive Radio) technology have been studied actively because of frequency scarcity. For implementing CR systems, spectrum sensing technology plays key role. In IEEE 802.22 WRAN, the first standard aimed at Internet service in a TV channel with CR technology. This paper explained the various spectrum sensing schemes detecting narrowband ATSC signal in the IEEE 802.22 such as Energy detector, Spectral Correlation Sensing scheme, Covariance based Sensing algorithm and analyzed in terms of the probability of misdetection when the probability of false alarm is 10%. Based on simulation results, this paper proposed a duplex sensing scheme based on Energy detector and analyzed the capability of the proposed sensing scheme comparing with each sensing scheme.

  • In this paper, we propose a detection method that automatically detects concrete surface cracks using fuzzy method in the image of concrete surface cracks. First, the proposed method detecting concrete surface cracks detects the candidate crack areas by applying R, G, B channel values of the concrete crack image to fuzzy method. We finally detect cracks by the density information about the detected candidate areas after we remove the detailed noises on the image of the concrete surface cracks. The experiments using real concrete images showed that the proposed method is greatly improved of crack detection compared with the conventional methods.

  • We propose a new channel reservation protocol which can reduce message delay by using a counter for detection of d source conflict in a WDM single-hop network with non-equivalent propagation delay. A source convict occurs when a source node has the right to transmit more than or equal to two messages simultaneously, which are transmitted using different wavelengths. In such a case, the source node has to newly obtain the right to transmit the message. In the proposed protocol, by using a source conflict counter a source node can detect a source conflict before a wave-length assignment is performed. Therefore, the source node can start a procedure to newly obtain the right to transmit the message which cannot be transmitted due to a source conflict. We analyse the throughput performance by taking the effect of a source conflict into account, and show that the approximate analysis and the computer simulated results are close. Also, from computer simulated results, we show that our proposed protocol can reduce mean message delay dramatically without degrading throughput performance as the offered load becomes large.

  • In this paper we suggested an automated method for detecting and counting rapid eye movement(REM) using EOG during sleep. This method is formulated by two step fuzzy logic. At first step, the velocity and the distance of single channel eye movement are used for the fuzzy input to get the possibility of being REM at each EOG. At second step, the two possibility values of both EOG from the first step and the correlation coefficient of both eye movements are used for the fuzzy logic input, and the output is the final possibility of being Rapid Eye Movement. We applied this algorithm to the normal and narcoleptic sleep data and compared the difference. We found the possibility that the count of REM can be a parameter that has significant physiological meanings.

  • Several repeater systems are used to enhance the cell coverage to location such as shadow and rural areas in mobile systems. But the general RF repeater solutions are not suitable for high power outdoor environment because it has the weakness such as self oscillation problem With adoption of a adaptive digital filter technology, feedback interference cancellation repeater prevents oscillation by detecting and canceling the unwanted feedback signal between transmission and receiver antenna. In this paper, dual NLMS based interference cancellation method is proposed and the step size adaptation can be implemented by the estimation of the feedback channel Doppler frequency characteristics. The performance of the proposed algorithm is quantified via analysis and simulation for the static and multipath fading feedback channels.

  • During tunnel excavation, drawdown of groundwater table or discharge from tunnel faces may not only reduce stability of tunnel and work efficiency but cause environmental problems. We have investigated the applicability of electrical resistivity survey for the establishment of the monitoring system for groundwater behavior and detecting flow channel of groundwater during tunnel excavation. The groundwater level was continuously measured at several points for 1 year. Survey was conduted at every 3 months using preinstalled electrical resistivity cables on site. The results show that observed changes in resistivity ratios in the area can be explained with observed changes in groundwater level. Thus, we believed that electrical resistivity analysed together with groundwater data can be applied for the monitoring of groundwater in tunnel area.

  • The present work is aimed at further discussing the effectiveness of dimensionless parameters recently proposed for the analysis of flow stability in heated channels with supercritical fluids. In this purpose, after presenting the main motivations for the introduction of these parameters in place of previously proposed ones, additional information on the theoretical bases and on the consequences of this development is provided. Stability maps, generated by an in-house program adapted from a previous application to boiling channels, are also shown for different combinations of the operating parameters. The maps are obtained as contour plots of an amplification parameter obtained from numerical discretization and subsequent linearization of governing equations; as such, they provide a quantitatively clear perspective of the effect of different boundary conditions on the stability of heated channels with supercritical fluids. In order to assess the validity of the assumptions at the basis of the in-house model, supporting calculations have been performed making use of the RELAP5/MOD3.3 computer code, detecting the values of the dimensionless parameters at the threshold for the occurrence of instability for a heated channel representative of SCWR proposed core configurations. The obtained results show reasonable agreement with the maps, supporting the applicability of the proposed scaling parameters for describing the dynamic behaviour of heated channels with supercritical fluids.

  • A small-sized gas identification system has been fabricated and characterized using an integrated gas sensor array and artificial neural-network. The sensor array consists of four thick-film oxide semiconductor gas sensors whose sensing layers are $In_{2}O_{3}-Sb_{2}O_{5}-Pd-doped\;SnO_2$ + Pd-coated layer, $La_{2}O_{5}-PdCl_{2}-doped\;SnO_2,\;WO_{3}-doped\;SnO_{2}$ + Pt-coated layer and $ThO_{2}-V_{2}O_{5}-PdCl_{2}\;doped\;SnO_{2}$. The small-sized gas identification instrument is composed of a GMS 81504 containing an internal ROM (4k bytes), a RAM (128 bytes) and four-channel AD converter as MPU, LEDs for displaying alarm conditions for three gases (liquefied petroleum gas: LPG, liquefied natural gas: LNG and carbon monoxide: CO) and interface circuits for them. The instrument has been used to identify alarm conditions for three gases among the real circumstances and the identification has been successfully demonstrated.

  • To increase the bit rate over than 1 Gb/s in LED visible light communications, we need to reduce the multipath effect of the light in indoor environment. In this paper, we propose a MAC protocol for LED visible light wireless LAN with beamforming technique. We assumed that spatial light modulator is used for beamforming function. We use polling method since detecting another uplink channel is difficult in visible light communication. We also estimated the performance of the proposed MAC protocol.
