The activation of adenylate cyclase of human thyrocytes in primary cell culture and the release of c-AMP into the medium are used to detect b-TSH and TSAb in sera of patients with autoimmune thyroid disease. Sera of patients are used directly as a part of cell culture without immunoglobulin precipitation. In the above TSI bioassay, TSAb pooled serum show c-AMP concentration between that of 1mU/ml and 10 mU/ml b-TSH but normal control pooled serum doesn't show any detectable c-AMP response. Ninety fiye percent of untreated Graves' patients shows TSAb activity above normal range, 20% of Hashimoto's and 36% of euthyroid Graves' patients show detectable TSAb activity.
In this paper, an auto-diagnosis method of rotor bar fault for small induction motor is suggested. Usually FFT of stator currents are given the good results, but to detect the fault, slip is needed for calculating the feature frequency. The slip is varied as the load is changed. So in this paper, some alternative method for estimating the load is suggested. This method is based on the Park's vector pattern. The magnitudes of the feature frequency are compared with the threshhold that is predefined in the bounded range of load. The healthy rotor, single rotor bar fault and double rotor bar fault are tested with no load, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% rated load. From 50% to 100% rated load case, the rotor bar faults are detectable using indirect estimation of the load and the comparing the magnitudes of feature frequency. The no load case and under 40% rated load case, rotor fault are un detectable.
Health complaints among vinylhouse workers in Sungjoo county, Kyungpook province led to the investigation of heavy metal levels of air, soil and humans as well as physical conditions of the vinylhouse. The average temperature and humidity inside the vinylhouse were 8 higher and 10% point lower, respectively, as compared to the outside. While discomfort index(D. I.) outside was pleasant level(69.2), D. I. inside was 82 at which point 100% of people feels discomfort. Cadmium concentration of soils inside the vinylhouse(0.116 mg/kg) was 1.8 times higher than the soils outside. Arsenic concentration of soils inside the vinylhouse(4.882 mg/kg) was only slightly higher than the soils outside(4.182 ng/kg). However, both heavy metal concentrations detected in soils inside or outside the vinylhouse were within the normal range. Analysis of 10 air samples taken inside the vinylhouse showed that only one sample had a cadmium concentration above the detectable level and the rest of samples were below the detectable levels. While there were no difference of arsenic concentrations in urine between male and female, cadmium concentrations in urine samples of female (3.31 ug/l) was slightly higher than male(2.38 ug/l). Age-dependent increases of cadmium concentrations in urine samples were also observed. However, there was no concentration difference of these heavy metals in urine between vinylhouse workers and non-vinylhouse workers. Urine concentrations of cadmium and arsenic detected from vinylhouse workers or non-vinylhouse workers were within the normal range. The present study represents a first attempt to evaluate physical and environmental risk factors of the vinylhouse affecting the vinylhouse farmer's health. The study revealed that, while physical conditions of the vinylhouse such as temperature and humidity are the possible factors associated with the farmer's complaints, environmental contamination as judged from heavy metal levels in soil, air and humans is not a risk factor contributing to the vinylhouse farmer's health problem.
Recent results from microlensing surveys show that a free-floating planet or a wide-separation planet is more numerous than a main-sequence star in the Galaxy. Moreover, the detection efficiency of the planets will be improved in next-generation experiments with a high survey monitoring frequency. However, microlensing events produced by both planets appear similar light curves with a short duration timescale, thus it is difficult to distinguish them. In this paper, we investigated the detectable separation range of a wide-separation planet as the planet bound to its host star. We construct the fractional deviation maps using the magnifications of the planetary lensing and the single-lensing by planet itself for various parameters such as a mass ratio, separation, and source radius. As a result, we found that the pattern of the fractional deviation is related to the ratio of source radius to caustic size, and the ratio satisfying the detection criterion (i.e., ${\geq}5%$ in the fractional deviation) varies with a separation. Hence, we derived a fitting formula as the function of a mass ratio and a source radius to reflect the variation in the calculations of the detectable separation range of a wide-separation planet as the planet bound to its host star. In addition, we estimated the condition that a wide-separation planet can be detected as a single-lensing event under the finite source effect. We found that such a case is possible provided that the source radius is smaller than ~2.5 times of Einstein ring radius of a planet, regardless of a separation or a mass ratio.
This article describes the system architecture of KUVE (KIST Unmanned Vehicle Electric) and unmanned autonomous navigation of it in KIST. KUVE, which is an electric light-duty vehicle, is equipped with two laser range finders, a vision camera, a differential GPS system, an inertial measurement unit, odometers, and control computers for autonomous navigation. KUVE estimates and tracks the boundary of road such as curb and line using a laser range finder and a vision camera. It follows predetermined trajectory if there is no detectable boundary of road using the DGPS, IMU, and odometers. KUVE has over 80% of success rate of autonomous navigation in KIST.
In the present study, a large-area hybrid gamma imaging system was designed by adopting coded aperture imaging on the basis of a large-area Compton camera to achieve high imaging performance throughout a broad energy range (100-2000 keV). The system consisting of a tungsten coded aperture mask and monolithic NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors was designed through a series of Geant4 Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations, in consideration of both imaging sensitivity and imaging resolution. Then, the performance of the system was predicted by Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations for point sources under various conditions. Our simulation results show that the system provides very high imaging sensitivity (i.e., low values for minimum detectable activity, MDA), thus allowing for imaging of low-activity sources at distances impossible with coded aperture imaging or Compton imaging alone. In addition, the imaging resolution of the system was found to be high (i.e., around 6°) over the broad energy range of 59.5-1330 keV.
A 100 kW thermal power pool-type light water reactor and Pu(Be) as a fast neutron source were used to determine the appropriate carrier for irradiating boron-containing samples with neutron beams. The tested materials (carriers) were subjected to neutron beams in the reactor's tangential channel. The geometrical arrangement of experimental facilities relative to the neutron beam trajectory, as well as the effect of sample thickness on the count rate, were investigated. The majority of the detectable charged particles emitted by the neutron beam's interaction with tested materials and the detector's detecting layer are protons (recoiled hydrogen) and particles generated in nuclear reactions (protons and alpha particles), respectively. Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter (SRIM) software was used to do theoretical calculations for the range of expected released particles in various materials, including human tissue. The results of measurement and calculation are in good agreement. According to experiments and theoretical calculations, the number of protons emitted by tissue-like materials may commit a dose comparable to that of boron capture reactions. Furthermore, the range of protons is significantly larger than that of alpha particles, which most probably changes dose distribution in healthy cells surrounding the tumor, which is undesirable in the BNCT approach.
Present guided missiles are equipped with infrared seeker to find the infrared sources radiating from target plane and then chase, which results in an improvement of the hitting success rate when in striking target objects. To interrupt the chases from the guided missile, the target plane spreads the flare, avoiding the missile attracts. Our research is to develop a 2-color infrared identification technique to discern the flare and real thermal source from target plane. Considering flare radiation properties and EM atmosphere transmission rates, two channels were selected, in which main channel (MC) was in a range of 3.7 μm∼4.8 μm and auxiliary channel (AC) in 1.7 μm∼2.3 μm. A 2500K heat source was used for an artificial flare source, while a 570K heat source was utilized for airplane infrared source in experimental testing. Two infrared sensors detectable only at each chanel were employed in order to measure the voltage ratio from two channels, identifying the flare and real target plane via comparison the voltage ratio. Several experimental conditions were imported in order to prove that our proposed 2-color infrared identification technique is very efficient way to discern heat sources from aircraft and flare, demonstrating that our proposed technique is very promising means for our force’s InfraRed Counter Counter Measure (IRCCM) in order to countermeasure opposite force’s InfraRed Counter Measures (IRCM).
Tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) were quantitatively determined in surface sediments and two molluscan species, Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and rock shell (Thais ctavigera), from Gwangyang Bay, Korea. Butyltin compounds were detectable in almost all sediment and biota samples. Tributyltin concentrations in surface sediment ranged<2∼33 ng g$\^$-1/, which is at a lower end of TBT concentrations in industrialized bays in Korea. However, TBT levels in sediments were related to boating activities around the bay. In biota samples, TBT concentrations were in the range of 178∼2,458 ng g$\^$-1/ toy oyster and 47∼236 ng g$\^$-1/ for rock shell. Relatively high TBT concentrations in biota were found near wharves for fisherboats and harbor areas. About 90∼100% of the female T. clavigera displayed imposex, and relative penis length index of the imposexed-female was in the range of 20.9∼107.9%. Furthermore, TBT body residue had a significant positive relationship with degree of imposex in T. clavigera. Overall, TBT concentrations in Gwanyang Bay were much lower than other major bays in Korea.
Distribution of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) in Seoul surface soils was investigated with a simple micro-analytical method consisting of ultrasonic extraction, one-dimensional dual band thin-layer chromatographic separation (TLC) and spectrofluorometric determination. The TLC was done in the following condition: thin-layer plate; Kieselguhr G/Acetylated cellulose, Developer; 1st; ether, 2nd; methanol-ether-water (4:4:1, V/V). The results thus obtained were as follows; 1. All the samples collected from various areas were contained detectable amount of benzo(a)pyrene. The range and average of benzo(a)pyrene contents in Seoul areas are 0.20 $\sim$5.90ppm and 1.01 ppm, respectively. 2. Benzo(a)pyrene contents in soils obtained from commercial areas were much higher than those in industrial and residential areas. The contents range in commercial, industrial, and residential areas are 0.31 $\sim$ 5.90 ppm, 0.36 $\sim$ 1.22 ppm and 0.20 $\sim$ 0.67 ppm, respectively. 3. Benzo(a)pyrene contents in soils from major roads were far higher than those from side or park roads. The ranges of benzo(a)pyrene contents in major, park and side road are 0.40 $\sim$ 5.9 ppm, 0.20 $\sim$ 0.70 ppm, 0.31 $\sim$ 1.30 ppm, respectively. These findings suggest strongly that surface soils in Seoul city are polluted by benzo(a)pyrene probably emitted automobiles.
