  • A general procedure of obtaining reliable one-step kinetics model for hydrocarbon mixture from the fully detailed chemistry is described iin this study. One-step theoretical formulation of the induction parameter model IPM uses a theoretical reconstruction of the induction time database obtained from a detailed kinetics library. Non-dimensional induction time calculations is compared with that of detailed kinetics. The IPM was latter implemented to fluid dynamics code and applied for the numerical simulation of detonation wave propagation. The numerical results including the numerical smoked-foil record show the all the details of the detonation wave propagation characteristics at the cost around 1/100 of the detailed kinetics calculation.

  • In this study a new hysteretic damper for seismic retrofit of soft-first story structures is proposed and its seismic retrofit effect is evaluated. The damper consists of one steel column member and two flexural fuses at both ends made of steel plates with reduced section, which can be placed right beside existing columns in order to minimize interference with passengers and automobiles in the installed bays. The relative displacement between the stories forms flexural plastic hinges at the fuses and dissipate seismic energy. The theoretical formulation and the design procedure based on plastic analysis is provided for the proposed damper, and the results are compared with a detailed finite-element (FE) model. In order to apply the damper in structural analysis, a macromodel of the damper is also developed and calibrated by the derived theoretical formulas. The results are compared with the detailed FE analysis, and the efficiency of the damper is further validated by the seismic retrofit of a case study structure and assessing its seismic performance before and after the retrofit. The results show that the proposed hysteretic damper can be used effectively in reducing damage to soft-first story structures.

  • Perforated wall has long been employed to control a variety of flow phenomena. It has been, in general, characterized by a porosity of the perforated wall. However, this porosity value does not take account of the number and detailed shape of porous holes, but is defined by only the ratio of the perforated area to total wall surface area. In order to quantify the porous wall effects on the flow control performance, an effective porosity should be known with the detailed flow properties inside the porous holes. In the present study, a theoretical analysis using a small disturbance method is performed to investigate detailed flow information through porous hole and a computational work is also carried out using the two-dimensional, compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Both the results are compared with existing experimental data. The gasdynamical porosity is defined to elucidate the effect of perforated wall.

  • This paper presents a theoretical analysis and comparisons of active power filter (APF) and hybrid power filter (HPF) systems, given terminal constraints of harmonic compensations in nonlinear loads. Despite numerous publications for the two types of filters, the features and differences between them have not been clearly explained. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the operations of a HPF inverter along with those of passive power filters (PPFs). It also includes their effects on the power factor at the grid. In addition, a theoretical analysis and a systematic comparison between the APF and HPF systems are addressed based on system parameters such as the source voltage, output power, reactive component size, and power factor at the grid terminals. The converter kVA ratings and dc-link voltage requirements for both topologies are considered in the presented comparisons

  • The span record of cable-stayed bridges has exceeded 1,000 m, which makes research on the maximum possible span length of cable-stayed bridges an important topic in the engineering community. In this paper, span limit is discussed from two perspectives: the theoretical span limit determined by the strength-to-density ratio of the cable and girder, and the engineering span limit, which depends not only on the strength-to-density ratio of materials but also on the actual loading conditions. Closed form equations of both theoretical and engineering span limits of cable-stayed bridges determined by the cable and girder are derived and a detailed parametric analysis is conducted to assess the engineering span limit under current technical conditions. The results show that the engineering span limit of cable-stayed bridges is about 2,200 m based on materials used available today. The girder is the critical member restricting further increase in the span length; its compressive stress is the limiting factor. Approaches to increasing the engineering span limit are also presented based on the analysis results.

  • Suction anchors are widely adopted and play an important role in mooring systems. However, how to reliably predict the failure mode and ultimate pullout capacity of the anchor in sand, especially by an easy-to-use theoretical method, is still a great challenge. Existing methods for predicting the inclined pullout capacity of suction anchors in sand are mainly based on experiments or finite element analysis. In the present work, based on a rational mechanical model for suction anchors and the failure mechanism of the anchor in the seabed, an analytical model is developed which can predict the failure mode and ultimate pullout capacity of suction anchors in sand under inclined loading. Detailed parametric analysis is performed to explore the effects of different parameters on the failure mode and ultimate pullout capacity of the anchor. To examine the present model, the results from experiments and finite element analysis are employed to compare with the theoretical predictions, and a general agreement is obtained. An analytical method that can evaluate the optimal position of the attachment point is also proposed in the present study. The present work demonstrates that the failure mode and pullout capacity of suction anchors in sand can be easily and reasonably predicted by the theoretical model, which might be a useful supplement to the experimental and numerical methods in analyzing the behavior of suction anchors.

  • This paper introduces a new soft switched AC-DC boost converter with power factor correction (PFC). In the introduced converter, all devices are turned on and off under soft switching (SS). The main switch is turned on under zero voltage transition (ZVT) and turned off under zero current transition (ZCT). The main diode is turned on under zero voltage switching (ZVS) and turned off under zero current switching (ZCS). Meanwhile, there is not any current or voltage stress on the main devices. Besides, the auxiliary switch is turned on under ZCS and turned off under ZVS. The detailed theoretical analysis of the converter is presented, and also theoretical analysis is verified by a prototype with 100 kHz and 500 W. Also, the proposed converter has 99.8% power factor and 97.5% total efficiency at soft switching operation.
