This paper highlights research being conducted to identify ground motion and structural characteristics that control the response of concentrically braced frames using hysteretic damper, unbonded brace, and to identify improved design procedures and code provisions. The focus of this paper is on the seismic response of six story concentrically braced frames utilizing hysteretic damper. A brief discussion is provided regarding the mechanical properties of such braces and the benefit of their use. Results of detailed nonlinear dynamic analyses are then examined for specific cases to characterize the effect on key response parameters of structural configurations and proportions.

Hybrid-type magnetic bearings using both permanent magnets and electromagnets have been used for rotating machinery. In the case of conventional thrust hybrid magnetic bearings supporting axial loads, radially magnetized permanent ring magnets, which have several demerits such as difficult magnetization and assembly, have been used to generate bias flux. In this study, a novel thrust hybrid magnetic bearing using an axially magnetized permanent ring magnet is presented. Because it is easy to magnetize a ring magnet in the axial direction, the segmentation of the ring magnet for magnetization is not required and the assembly process can be simplified. For verifying the performance of the proposed method, a test rig that consists of a proposed thrust magnetic bearing and variable loads is constructed. This paper presents the detailed design procedures and the obtained experimental results. The results show that the developed thrust magnetic bearing has the potential to replace conventional thrust magnetic bearings.
The recent surge in the production and handling of hazardous materials in Korea necessitates developing and implementing robust emergency response plans. These plans are crucial in safeguarding the well-being of workers and residents in the event of an incident. The consequence analysis methodology outlined in the KOSHA guidelines provides a foundation for designing emergency response plans in the event of chemical accidents. However, the consequence analysis is evaluated based on assumed accident cases or worst-case scenarios. Consequently, the emergency response plan based on the consequence analysis may overestimate the damage area, complicating rescue efforts and unnecessarily increasing costs. More information and parameters become available after an accident, enabling more accurate consequence analysis. This implies that the results of consequence analysis based on this detailed information provide more realistic results than those based on assumed accidents. This study attempts to optimize the resource allocation and cost-effectiveness of emergency response plans for chemical accidents. Existing procedures and manuals are revised to elucidate the proposed model and conduct real-time consequence analysis. The existing emergency response plan is compared to verify the proposed model's efficacy. The obtained results indicate that the proposed model can exhibit better performance.

The aim of this study is to present the handover procedures and the performance comparisons of layered mobility management schemes for wireless mobile Internet. To investigate efficient mobility management schemes providing seamless information services in a mobile environment, this paper provided the detailed discussions of existing network layered mobility management scheme, including Mobile IPv4, Mobile IPv6, and new transport layer mobility management scheme, stream control transmission protocol (SCTP) based mobility architecture (SMA). Network simulator-2 (ns-2) was used to compare the performance between Mobile IPv6 and SMA in the wireless mobile Internet environment. Simulation results show that for typical network configuration and parameters, SMA has a lower handover latency, lower packet loss rate, and higher throughput than Mobile IPv6.

Rehabilitation of historical unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings is a priority in many parts of the world, since those buildings are a living part of history and a testament of human achievement of the era of their construction. Many of these buildings are still operational; comprising brittle materials with no reinforcements, with spatially distributed mass and stiffness, they are not encompassed by current seismic assessment procedures that have been developed for other structural types. To facilitate the difficult task of selecting a proper rehabilitation strategy - often restricted by international treaties for non-invasiveness and reversibility of the intervention - and given the practical requirements for the buildings' intended reuse, this paper presents a practical procedure for assessment of seismic demands of URM buildings - mainly historical constructions that lack a well-defined diaphragm action. A key ingredient of the method is approximation of the spatial shape of lateral translation, ${\Phi}$, that the building assumes when subjected to a uniform field of lateral acceleration. Using ${\Phi}$ as a 3-D shape function, the dynamic response of the system is evaluated, using the concepts of SDOF approximation of continuous systems. This enables determination of the envelope of the developed deformations and the tendency for deformation and damage localization throughout the examined building for a given design earthquake scenario. Deformation demands are specified in terms of relative drift ratios referring to the in-plane and the out-of-plane seismic response of the building's structural elements. Drift ratio demands are compared with drift capacities associated with predefined performance limits. The accuracy of the introduced procedure is evaluated through (a) comparison of the response profiles with those obtained from detailed time-history dynamic analysis using a suite of ten strong ground motion records, five of which with near-field characteristics, and (b) evaluation of the performance assessment results with observations reported in reconnaissance reports of the field performance of two neoclassical torsionally-sensitive historical buildings, located in Thessaloniki, Greece, which survived a major earthquake in the past.

Since rolling contact fatigue cracks can always occur on the rail surface, which is the contact surface between wheels and rails, railway rails require thorough inspection and diagnosis to thoroughly inspect the condition of the cracks and prevent breakage. Recent detailed guidelines on the performance evaluation of track facilities present the requirements for methods and procedures for track performance evaluation. However, diagnosing and grading rail surface damage mainly relies on external inspection (visual inspection), which inevitably relies on qualitative evaluation based on the subjective judgment of the inspector. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a deep learning model study for rail surface defect detection using Fast R-CNN. After building a dataset of rail surface defect images, the model was tested. The performance evaluation results of the deep learning model showed that mAP was 94.9%. Because Fast R-CNN has a high crack detection effect, it is believed that using this model can efficiently identify rail surface defects.

The recently enacted detailed guidelines on the performance evaluation of track facilities presented the necessary requirements regarding the evaluation procedures and implementation methods of track performance evaluation. However, the grade of rail surface damage is determined by external inspection (visual inspection), and there is no choice but to rely only on qualitative evaluation based on the subjective judgment of the inspector. Therefore, in this study, we attempted to develop a diagnostic application that can diagnose rail internal defects using rail surface damage. In the field investigation, rail surface damage was investigated and patterns were analyzed. Additionally, in the indoor test, SEM testing was used to construct image data of rail internal damage, and crack length, depth, and angle were quantified. In this study, a deep learning model (Fast R-CNN) using image data constructed from field surveys and indoor tests was applied to the application. A rail surface damage diagnosis application (App) using a deep learning model that can be used on smart devices was developed. We developed a smart diagnosis system for rail surface damage that can be used in future track diagnosis and performance evaluation work.
Software development based on product lines has been proved a promising technology that can drastically reduce cycle time and guarantee quality by strategically reusing quality core assets that belong to an organization. However, how to measure within a product line is different from how to measure within a single software project in that we have to consider the aspects of both core assets and projects that utilize the assets. Moreover, the performance aspects of overall project lines need to be considered within a product line context. Therefore, a systematic approach to measure the performance of product lines is essential to have consistent, repeatable and effective measures within a product line. This paper presents a context-based measurements elicitation approach for product lines that reflects the performance characteristics of product lines and the diversity of their application. The approach includes both detailed procedures and work products resulting from implementation of the procedures, along with their templates. To show the utility of the approach, this paper presents the elicited measurements, especially for technical management practices among product line practices. This paper also illustrated a real application case that adopt this approach. The systematic approach enables management attributes, i.e., measurements to be identified when we construct product lines or develop software product based on the product lines. The measurements will be effective in that they are derived in consideration of the application context and interests of stakeholders.
The purpose of this paper is to develop a fire HRA (Human Reliability Analysis) procedure for full power operation of domestic NPPs (Nuclear Power Plants). For the development of fire HRA procedure, the recent research results of NUREG-1921 in an effort to meet the requirements of the ASME/ANS PRA Standard were reviewed. The K-HRA method, a standard method for HRA of a domestic level 1 PSA (Probabilistic Safety Assessment) and fire related procedures in domestic NPPs were reviewed. Based on the review, a procedure for the fire HRA required for a domestic fire PSA based on the K-HRA method was developed. To this end, HRA issues such as new operator actions required in the event of a fire and complexity of fire situations were considered. Based on the four kinds of HFE (Human Failure Event) developed for a fire HRA in this research, a qualitative analysis such as feasibility evaluation was suggested. And also a quantitative analysis process which consists of screening analysis and detailed analysis was proposed. For the qualitative analysis, a screening analysis by NUREG-1921 was used. In this research, the screening criteria for the screening analysis was modified to reduce vague description and to reflect recent experimental results. For a detailed analysis, the K-HRA method and scoping analysis by NUREG-1921 were adopted. To apply K-HRA to fire HRA for quantification, efforts to modify PSFs (Performance Shaping Factors) of K-HRA to reflect fire situation and effects were made. For example, an absence of STA (Shift Technical Advisor) to command a fire brigade at a fire area is considered and the absence time should be reflected for a HEP (Human Error Probability) quantification. Based on the fire HRA procedure developed in this paper, a case study for HEP quantification such as a screening analysis and detailed analysis with the modified K-HRA was performed. It is expected that the HRA procedure suggested in this paper will be utilized for fire PSA for domestic NPPs as it is the first attempt to establish an HRA process considering fire effects.
DATS which is one of three subsystems of IDACS is responsible to receive Sensor Data, LRIT and HRIT in L-Band and transmit LRIT and HRIT in S-Band from/to COMS satellite. This paper shows detailed test procedures used to verify the performance and functionality of DATS after its implementation was completely finished. As a part of efforts to verify key DATS performance, G/T and EIRP were measured by using solar flux density as radio source. Regarding the verification of DATS functionality, RF loop-back test was conducted to validate if there is no BER degradation excepting MODEM/BB implementation loss occurred in the integrated DATS. Integrated with 13m antenna, DATS successfully restored image from received MTSAT-1R broadcasting data, LRIT and HRIT, of which frequencies are all L-Band. S-Band transmission was also verified through test antenna placed away from 13m antenna by measuring real LRIT and HRIT spectrum in S-Band. From those test results, DATS is determined to be fully ready to communicate with COMS in L-Band and S-Band.
