Objective: The use of locally produced forage (LPF) in cattle production has economic and environmental advantages over imported forage. The objective of this study was to characterize the nutritional value of LPF commonly used in Korea. Differences in ruminal fermentation characteristics were also examined for the LPF species commonly produced from two major production regions: Chungcheong and Jeolla. Methods: Ten LPF (five from each of the two regions) and six of the most widely used imported forages originating from North America were obtained at least three times throughout a year. Each forage species was pooled and analyzed for nutrient content using detailed chemical analysis. Ruminal fermentation characteristics were also determined by in vitro anaerobic incubations using strained rumen fluid for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h. At each incubation time, total gas, pH, ammonia, volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations, and neutral detergent fiber digestibility were measured. By fitting an exponential model, gas production kinetics were obtained. Results: Significant differences were found in the non-fiber carbohydrate (NFC) content among the forage species and the regions (p<0.01). No nutrient, other than NFC, showed significant differences among the regions. Crude protein, NFC, and acid detergent lignin significantly differed by forage species. The amount of acid detergent insoluble protein tended to differ among the forages. The forages produced in Chungcheong had a higher amount of NFC than that in Jeolla (p<0.05). There were differences in ruminal fermentation of LPF between the two regions and interactions between regions and forage species were also significant (p<0.05). The pH following a 48-h ruminal fermentation was lower in the forages from Chungcheong than from Jeolla (p<0.01), and total VFA concentration was higher in Chungcheong than in Jeolla (p = 0.05). This implies that fermentation was more active with the forages from Chungcheong than from Jeolla. Analysis of gas production profiles showed the rate of fermentation differed among forage species (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the nutritional values of some LPF (i.e., corn silage and Italian ryegrass) are comparable to those of imported forages widely used in Korea. This study also indicated that the nutritional value of LPF differs by origin, as well as by forage species. Detailed analyses of nutrient composition and digestion kinetics of LPF should be routinely employed to evaluate the correct nutritional value of LPF and to increase their use in the field.

A general overview of the lipid peroxidation and its nutritional significance are presented ,with emphasis on the reaction mechaisms, peroxidized products, further interaction and nutritional/biological deterioration in a series of oxidative process. Overall mechanism with various factors and elements for initiation , propagation and termination of free radical reaction is reviewed and the primary /secondary products of peroxidized lipids are defined. Since these products are potentially reactive substances that can cause deterioration of proteins /amino acids and vitamins (carotene, tocopherols and ascorbic acid etc), mechanism and actual damages of their deterioration in some foods and biological models are outlined. Especially , chemical changes caused by interaction of peroxidized products (related hydroperoxides, radicals and malonaldehye etc) and protein are emphasized here. And also, the detailed mechanisms on radical scavenging of the these vitamins which are the most prominent natural antioxidants are presented . Additionally , the possible roles of peroxidicaed lipids and their secondary products in the process of aging an carcinogenesis are briefly discussed . However, it is important to not that more detailed and integrated studies on the reaction kinetics, energetics of peroxidation, their decomposed products , biochemical interaction potential damaging/aging / carcinogenic effects, protection from their oxidative spoilage and novel antioxidants in food and heterogeneous biological systems will be essential in order to assessing the implication of lipid peroxidation to human nutrition and health.
The SSC-K system analysis code is under development at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) as a part of the KALIMER project. The SSC-K code is being used as the principal tool for analyzing a variety of off-normal conditions or accidents of the preliminary KALIMER design. The SSC-K code features a multiple-channel core representation coupled with a point kinetics model with reactivity feedback. It provides a detailed, one-dimensional thermal-hydraulic simulation of the primary and secondary sodium coolant circuits, as well as the balance-of-plant steam/water circuit. Recently a two-dimensional hot pool model was incorporated into SSC-K for analysis of thermal stratification phenomena in the hot pool. In addition, SSC-K contains detailed models for the passive decay heat removal system and a generalized plant control system. The SSC-K code has also been applied to the computational engine for an interactive simulation of the KALIMER plant. This paper presents an overview of the recent activities concerned with SSC-K code model development This paper focuses on both descriptions of the newly adopted thermal hydraulic and neutronic models, and applications to KALIMER analyses for typical anticipated transients without scram.
A nonlinear acoustic instability of subcritical liquid-oxygen droplet flames burning in gaseous hydrogen environment are investigated numerically. Emphases are focused on the effects of finite-rate kinetics by employing a detailed hydrogen-oxygen chemistry and of the phase change of liquid oxygen. Results show that if nonlinear harmonic pressure oscillations are imposed, larger flame responses occur during the period that the pressure passes its temporal minimum, at which point flames are closer to extinction condition. Consequently, the flame response function, normalized during one cycle of pressure oscillation, increases nonlinearly with the amplitude of pressure perturbation. This nonlinear response behavior can be explained as a possible mechanism to produce the threshold phenomena for acoustic instability, often observed during rocket-engine tests.

A numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the inlet buzz and combustion oscillation in an axisymmetric ramjet engine with wedge-type flame holders. The physical model of concern includes the entire engine flow path, extending from the leading edge of the inlet center-body through the exhaust nozzle. The theoretical formulation is based on the Farve-averaged conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species concentration, and accommodates finite-rate chemical kinetics and variable thermo-physical properties. Turbulence closure is achieved using a combined scheme comprising of a low-Reynolds number k-${\varepsilon}$ two-equation model and Sarkar's compressible turbulence model. Detailed flow phenomena such as inlet flow aerodynamics, flame evolution, and acoustic excitation as well as their interactions, are investigated. Mechanisms responsible for driving the inlet buzz are identified and quantified for the engine operating at subcritical conditions.
Lean premix combustion is a best method in low $NO_x$ gas turbine combustor and we must know the characteristics of NO emission in high temperature and pressure condition in premix flame. Numerical analysis was performed to investigate the NO emission characteristics by adopting a counterflow as a model problem using detailed chemical kinetics. Methane $(CH_4)$ was used as a test fuel which is the main fuel of natural gas. The tested parameters were stretch rate, equivalence ratio, initial temperature, and pressure in premix flame. Results showed that NO emission was high in low stretch rate, near stoichiometric equivalence ratio, high initial temperature, and high pressure. Also, the pressure effect was sensitive in high temperature condition.

In this paper, the mass optimization of four bar linkages is carried out using genetic algorithms (GA) with single and dual constraints. The single constraint of bending stress and the dual constraints of bending and buckling stresses are imposed. From the movement response of the bar linkage mechanism, the analysis of the mechanism is developed using the combination of kinematics, kinetics, and finite element analysis (FEA). A penalty-based transformation technique is used to convert the constrained problem into an unconstrained one. Lastly, a detailed comparison on the effect of single constraint and of dual constraints is presented.
This work describes a model development and numerical simulation of detailed combustion mechanisms of RDX/GAP/BTIN propellants. The analysis is based on the conservation equations of mass, energy, and species concentrations for both the condensed and gas phases, and takes into account finite-rate chemical kinetics and variable thermophysical properties. The model has been applied to study the combustion wave structures and burning characteristics of RDX/GAP/BTIN propellants over a broad range of pressures. Reasonably good agreement is achieved between the calculated and measured burning rate at atmospheric pressure. But the model calculation does not result in dark zone experimentally observed.
The present study is aiming at numerically analyze the soot formation processes coupled with gas reaction mechanism in turbulent non-premixed and partially premixed flames. In order to realistically represent turbulence-chemistry interactions with detailed chemical kinetics and soot formation behaviour related to the turbulent non-premixed and partially premixed flames, the transient flamelet[1] and flamelet based level-set approach[2] are coupled with soot formation based on the two equation model [3] and DQMOM (Direct Quadrature Method of Moment)[4].
