  • This study has been mainly motivated to numerically model the supercritical mixing and combustion processes encountered in the liquid propellant rocket engines. In the present approach, turbulence is represented by the extended k-e model. To account for the real fluid effects, the propellant mixture properties are calculated by using generalized cubic equation of state. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction in the turbulent nonpremixed flames, the flamelet approach based on the real fluid flamelet library has been adopted. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the effects of swirl number on flame structure of supercritical kerosene/LOx double swirl coaxial injector.

  • The two-equation soot model based on the transient laminar flamelet model is implemented for soot formation of laminar non-premixed $CH_4/Air$ flame with detailed chemical reaction mechanism and complex thermodynamic properties. The soot model represents nucleation, growth and oxidation with gas-phase chemistry. This represented unsteady flamelet soot model has been tested and compared using well verified reference calculation result obtained solving the Full Transport Equations method.

  • The present study is aiming at numerically analyze the soot formation processes coupled with gas reaction mechanism in turbulent non-premixed and partially premixed flames. In order to realistically represent turbulence-chemistry interactions with detailed chemical kinetics and soot formation behaviour related to the turbulent non-premixed and partially premixed flames, the transient flamelet[1] and flamelet based level-set approach[2] are coupled with soot formation based on the two equation model [3] and DQMOM (Direct Quadrature Method of Moment)[4].

  • The present paper reports high-fidelity simulation of direct initiation processes of cylindrical detonation waves by concentrated energy deposition. The goal is to understand the underpinning mechanisms in failed or successful detonation initiation processes. We employed the Space-Time CESE method to solve the reacting flow equations, including realistic finite-rate chemistry model of the nine species and twenty-four reactions for H$_2$-O$_2$-Ar mixtures. Detailed results of sub-critical, critical. and supercritical initiation process are reported.

  • Radiation-induced oscillatory instability in CH$_4$/Air diffusion flames is numerically investigated by adopting detailed chemistry. Counterflow diffusion flame is employed as a model flamelet and optically thin gas-phase radiation is assumed. Attention is focused on the extinction regime induced by radiative heat loss, which occurs at low strain rate. Once a steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of initial strain rate, transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of strain-rate perturbation is imposed on the steady flame. Depending on the initial strain rate and the amount of perturbed strain rate, transient evolution of the flame exhibits various types of flame-evolution behaviors. Basically, the dynamic behaviors can be classified into two types, namely oscillatory decaying solution and diverging solution leading to extinction.

  • Several nitrile-functionalized ionic liquids have been prepared and characterized. An attempt was made to systematically characterize nitrile-functionalized ionic liquids on the basis of a few kinds of cations and anions. The detailed comparison of the differences in physicical characteristics such as UV-Vis spectroscopy, thermal stability, viscosity, solubility property, and electrochemical property before and after incorporation of a nitrile group were studied. The results showed that the incorporation of a nitrile group to cations could result in remarkable changes in these properties.

  • The conditional moment closure(CMC) model has been implemented in context with the unstructured-grid finite-volume method which efficiently handle the physically and geometrically complex turbulent reacting flows. The validation cases include a turbulent nonpremixed CO/$H_2$/$N_2$ Jet flame and a turbulent nonpremixed $H_2$/CO flame stabilized on an axisymmetric bluff-body burner. In terms of mean flame field, minor species and NO formation, numerical results has the overall agreement with expermental data. The detailed discussion has been made for the turbulence-chemistry interaction and NOx formation characteristics as well as the comparative performance for CMC and flamelet model.

  • Flame onset and propagation within hydrogen premixed gas mixture are numerically investigated in an rectangular enclosure. A detailed chemistry for hydrogen reaction is applied to anticipate the thermochemical behavior of intermediate species appropriately. To facilitate computation, 10 species and 16 elementary reaction steps for hydrogen combustion are taken into account. On the basis of 30 % of hydrogen concentration in hydrogen-air mixture, the effects of position and quantity of ignition sources on the flame evolution are analyzed. From the simulation results, the means that can lessen the possible hazard caused by flame propagation are suggested.

  • In previous studies investigating the genus Xanthoparmelia, thirteen different species have been reported from South Korea alone. However, there currently has been no revisional study performed until now. To explore the genus Xanthoparmelia, a phenotypic analysis was performed based on morphological, anatomical and chemical characters, while an investigation of Xanthoparmelia phylogeny was based on nuclear ribosomal (nr) DNA ITS sequences. A thorough examination of the specimens deposited in the Korean Lichen Research Institute (KoLRI) confirmed that eight species of Xanthoparmelia occur inside South Korea. Our analysis further confirmed the colors of the lower surface and medullar chemistry are important taxonomic characters in Xanthoparmelia. This study also presents a detailed description of each species and a key to the genus.

  • By utilizing a semi-empirical soot model, the applicability of the laminar flamelet concept for simulating the formation and oxidation of soot in the laminar diffusion flame has been studied. The source terms for two transport equations of the soot formation and oxidation are calculated in the mixture fraction/scalar dissipation rate space for laminar flamelets and stored in a library. In this study, emphasis is given to the interaction associated with radiation and soot formation. The radiative heat loss is obtained by solving the radiative transfer equation using the unstructured grid finite volume method with the WSGGM. The calculated temperatures and soot volume fractions agree relatively well with the experimental data and the previous numerical results of Kaplan et al. using the detailed chemistry.
