The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of vibration of a steel frame structure is performed to extract modal parameters. The theoretical background of the POD method is introduced briefly, and this technique is further applied to free vibration displacements of one bay-two story steel frame structure to extract the modal parameters. From the POD analysis of the steel frame structure, it is found that important modal parameters such as true mode shapes, modal kinematic energy, natural frequencies, and damping ratios can be obtained for the building efficiently and in detail. Therefore, it is concluded that the POD method could be one of the useful techniques in analysis of vibration of structures.
This paper presents an under-actuated robotic hand inspired by the ligamentous structure of the human hand for a prosthetic application. The joint mechanisms are based on the concept of a tensegrity structure formed by elastic strings. These rigid bodies and elastic strings in the mechanism emulate the phalanx bones and primary ligaments found in human finger joints. As a result, the proposed hand inherently possesses compliant characteristics, ensuring robust adaptability during grasping and when interacting with physical environments. For the practical implementation of the tensegrity-based joint mechanism, we detail the installation of the strings and the routing of the driving tendon, which are related to extension and flexion, respectively. Additionally, we have designed the palm structure of the proposed hand to facilitate opposition and tripod grips between the fingers and thumb, taking into account the transverse arch of the human palm. In conclusion, we tested a prototype of the proposed hand to evaluate its motion and grasping capabilities.
This paper presents a method for detecting damage in irregular 2D and 3D continuum structures based on combination of wavelet transform (WT) with fuzzy inference system (FIS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Many damage detection methods study regular structures. This method studies irregular structures and doesn't need response of healthy structures. First the damaged structure is analyzed with finite element methods, and damage response is obtained at the finite element points that have irregular distance, secondly the FIS, which is optimized by PSO is used to obtain responses at points, having equal distance by response at those points that previously obtained by the finite element methods. Then a 2D (for 2D continuum structures) or a 3D (for 3D continuum structures) matrix is performed by equal distance point response. Thirdly, by applying 2D or 3D wavelet transform on 2D or 3D matrix that previously obtained by FIS detail matrix coefficient of WT is obtained. It is shown that detail matrix coefficient can determine the damage zone of the structure by perturbation in the damaged area. In order to illustrate the capability of proposed method some examples are considered.
This paper proposed a discrete wavelet transform based method for time-varying physical parameter identification of shear type structures. The time-varying physical parameters are dispersed and expanded at multi-scale as profile and detail signal using discrete wavelet basis. To reduce the number of unknown quantity, the wavelet coefficients that reflect the detail signal are ignored by setting as zero value. Consequently, the time-varying parameter can be approximately estimated only using the scale coefficients that reflect the profile signal, and the identification task is transformed to an equivalent time-invariant scale coefficient estimation. The time-invariant scale coefficients can be simply estimated using regular least-squares methods, and then the original time-varying physical parameters can be reconstructed by using the identified time-invariant scale coefficients. To reduce the influence of the ill-posed problem of equation resolving caused by noise, the Tikhonov regularization method instead of regular least-squares method is used in the paper to estimate the scale coefficients. A two-story shear type frame structure with time-varying stiffness and damping are simulated to validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. It is demonstrated that the identified time-varying stiffness is with a good accuracy, while the identified damping is sensitive to noise.
In terrain visualization, the quadtree is the most frequently used data structure for progressive mesh generation. The quadtree provides an efficient level-of-detail selection and view frustum culling. However, most applications using quadtrees are performed by the CPU, since the hierarchical data structure cannot be manipulated in a programmable rendering pipeline. For this reason, quadtree-based methods show lower performance and higher dependancy of CPU in comparison to GPU-based methods. We present a quadtree-based terrain-rendering method for GPU execution that uses vertex multiplication. It offers higher performance than previous CPU-based quadtree methods, without loss of image quality.

There are a lot of openings, holes and slots in ship structural members. It is not easy to solve the troubles around the openings adequately at the detail design stage, because there are a lot of concerning locations. There are not also clear design rules of classification societies and it is not possible to apply direct calculation for all the concerning members. Therefore, it is necessary to set up simplified approach such as a standard or guidance in order to decide the opening design quickly. For this study, guidance and regulations of each classification and several companies were surveyed. Grillage analysis and the refined mesh method were used to evaluate the strength around hole considering boundary condition and more detailed member arrangement. As a result, the standard for opening design was established and verified.
GIS (Geographic Information Systems) need faster access and better visualization. For faster access and better visualization in GIS, map generalization and levels of detail are needed. Existing spatial indexing methods do not support map generalization. Also, a few existing spatial indexing methods supporting map generalization do not support ail map generalization operations. We propose a new index structure, i.e. the LR-tree, supporting ail map generalization operations. This paper presents algorithms for the searching and updating the LR-tree and the results of performance evaluation. Our index structure works better than other spatial indexing methods for map generalization.
This paper proposes an indirect current control technique based on a proportional resonant (PR) approach for the seamless mode transfer of utility interactive inverters. Direct-current and voltage hybrid control methods have been used for inverter control under grid-connected and islanded modes. A large bandwidth can be selected due to the structure of single-loop control. However, this results in poor dynamic transients due to sudden changes of the controller during mode changes. Therefore, inverter control based on indirect current is proposed to improve the dynamic transients by consistently controlling the output voltage under all of the operation modes. A PR-based indirect current control topology is used in this study to maintain the load voltage quality under all of the modes. The design processes of the PR-based triple loop are analyzed in detail while considering the system stability and dynamic transients. The mode transfer techniques are described in detail for both sudden unintentional islanding and islanded mode voltage quality improvements. In addition, they are described using the proposed indirect control structure. The proposed method is verified by the PSiM simulations and laboratory-scale VDER-HILS experiments.

Hybrid precast concrete panel is a wall element that is able to quickly construct the core wall structure for moderate-rise modular buildings. Hybrid precast concrete panel has unique characteristics which is a pair of C-shaped steel beams combined at the top and bottom of a concrete wall, In this study, an improved anchorage detail for vertical rebar is proposed to ensure the lateral force resistance performance of hybrid precast concrete panel emulating monolithic concrete wall. Also, the structural performance of horizontal connection is investigated experimentally with the bolt spacing parameter. And the behavior of hybrid precast concrete panel with the improved detail is compared with the monolithic concrete wall tested in a previous study. Finally, the required thickness of C-shaped steel beam to eliminate or minimize the deformation in horizontal connection is calculated by prying action equation.

Since 1980's, optimum design techniques for ship structural design have been developed to the preliminary design which aims at minimum weight or minimum cost design of mid-ship section based on analytic structural analysis. But the optimum structural design researches about the application for the detail design of local structure based on FEA have been still insufficient. This paper presents optimization technique for the detail design of a racing motor boat. To improve the performance and reduce the damage of a real existing racing boat, direct structural analyses; static and non-linear transient dynamic analyses, were carried out to check the constraints of minimum weight design. As a result, it is shown that the optimum structural design of a racing boat has to be focused on reducing impulse response from pitching motion than static response because the dynamic effect is more dominant. Optimum design algorithm based on nonlinear finite element analysis for a racing motor boat was developed and coded to ANSYS, and its applicability for actual structural design was verifed.
