  • Two types of baby corn silk detachment systems called fixing and moving baby corn and based on applying frictional force on the silk were developed and evaluated. In the fixing mode the baby corn was fixed on a pin and a hollow frictional cylinder was moved concentrically and vertically along the baby corn towards the branch end. In the moving mode the baby corn was forced vertically towards the tip to pass through the same silk detachment cylinder. Traveling speeds of the detachment cylinder and the baby corn were 44.5 and 166.9 mm/s. In the fixing mode at silk moisture content of 91 % (w.b) silk detachment efficiencies at low and high speeds were 99.1 and 99.2%. The silk detachment efficiencies in the moving mode at low and high speeds were 96.6 and 98.5%. Damaged baby corn at low speed was less than at high speed in both modes. Minimum damage was nil in the fixing mode at low speed and the maximum was 47.5% in the moving mode at high speed. The damaged was due to ovaries r moval at the base near the joint between the baby corn and the branch.

  • Mechanical and physical properties of various parts of jujube (Zizyphus jojoba Miller) such as fruits, leaves, secondary branches, and leafy stems were measured and analyzed. The physical dimensions of the fruits were measured using a digital caliper, and the detachment force of the fruit and leafy stems was measured using a force gauge. The physical characteristics of the secondary branches such as the modulus of elasticity and the torsional rigidity were tested using a universal testing machine (UTM). The physical characteristics of leafy stems such as length and weight were also measured using a digital caliper and a digital scale, respectively. The detachment force of leafy stems and the area of the leaf also measured. The terminal velocities of the jujube fruits, leaves, and leafy stems were measured using a custom made terminal velocity experiment system. Diameter of the major and minor axis of the jujube fruit, weight of the fruit, and detachment force of the fruit stem was average of 32.02 mm, 23.92 mm. 10.0 ${\times}$ 10$\^$6/ ㎥, 8.99 g, and 5.43 N. respectively. The detachment forces of the jujube fruits increased and the force-to-weight ratio of the jujube fruits decreased as the weight of the jujube fruits increased. The modulus of elasticity of the secondary branches of the jujube was average of 7.01 ${\times}$ 10$\^$8/ N/㎡ and decreased as diameter of the secondary branches increased. The average torsional rigidity of the secondary jujube branches was 5.2 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-/ N/㎡, and the torsional rigidity decreased as the secondary branch diameter increased. The distribution of the torsional rigidity data associated with the diameter of the branches, however. widely scattered and it was difficult to find any relationship between the diameter of the branches and the torsional rigidity of tile branches. The weight of the leafy stems, number of loaves attached to the leafy stems, diameter of the stem side of the leafy stems, diameter of the leafy stem end was average or 0.7 g, 6.6 ea, 12.2 cm, 4.5 mm, and 2.7 mm, respectively. The major and minor axis of the .jujube loaves, area of leaves, weight of the leaves. and detachment force of the leaves was average of 5.7 cm, 3.3 cm, 12.98 cm$^2$, 0.20 g, and 4.39 N, respectively. The terminal velocity of the .jujube fruits increased as the weight of the fruits increased. The terminal velocity of the leafy stems, however, did not show a relationship with the weight of the leafy stems and the number of leaves attached to the leafy stem. The terminal velocity, however, slightly increased as the length of the leafy stems increased.

  • In this paper, we propose a new design of the permanent magnet reluctance wheel which will make it possible to attach the robot to a vertical plane and move it. In the newly suggested design, a permanent magnet is utilized to enhance the adhesive force during attachment, and an electromagnet is produced to weaken the magnetic field of the permanent magnet and reduce the adhesive force for easier detachment of wheels from steel plates. To characterize the performance of this new wheel design, a 3-D finite element analysis is executed using a commercial FE program. The results show that the adhesive force is reduced effectively by the electromagnet which flows in the reverse direction of the magnetic loop of the permanent magnet when the current is supplied to the coil.

  • Persimmon occupied the second largest cultivation area next to apple among the fruits in Korea. Since 70 % of its cultivating field is located at slope, the efficiency of its harvesting operation is very low. Also, the traditional persimmon harvest apparatus does not seem to be efficient to use due to a structural problem. In this paper, the author has analyzed the physical properties of persimmon friut-stem system and compared detachment force with developed persimmon harvest apparatus and traditional persimmon harvest apparatus in order to solve the problems mentioned above. The results of the research are summarized as follows : 1. The weight of the persimmon is shown as 157 g on average, the lengths of stem's major axis and minor axis is shown as 4.6 mm and 3.7 mm on average, respectively, sectional area of stem is shown as $13.9mm^2$ on average and the stem length is shown as 13.6 mm on average. 2 In case of the traditional persimmon harvest apparatus, the detachment force needed when a persimmon was detached from its stem was shown as 86.3 N on average. 3. In case of the developed persimmon harvest apparatus, detachment force needed when a persimmon was detached from its stem was shown as 72.6 N on average.

  • The trajectories of PCB(Printed Circuit Board) particles in the corona discharge electrostatic separation was simulated. The PCB particles are prepared by crushing bare board, which disassembled from electronic components, consist mostly of copper and FR-4(Flame Retardant Level-4) Firstly, a model was established for calculating of detachment points of PCB particles from the rotating electrode in separator. The model of detachment points was derived from equilibrium of force such as gravity force, centrifugal force, electrostatic force. The trajectories of particles after detachment was calculated by acceleration derived from time-integrating method of motion equation. In this simulation, particle size, supplied voltage, rotation speed of rotating roll electrode and angle of induction electrode were adopted as variables. While the trajectories of FR-4 particles were affected by all variables, rotation speed of rotating roll electrode was dominant variables affecting trajectories of copper particles.

  • Quantitative evaluation of substrates for cells is essential to understanding cell-material adhesive interaction and it is also necessary for the development of new biomaterials. Many cells on adhesive molecules will form an organization of actin into bundles and production of the large, highly organized structures termed focal adhesions. To better understand adhesion formations between cells and substrata, we have quantified the force required to displace attached cell. we allowed rabbit knee chondrocyte to attach on a substratum of microscope slide glass. Our results demonstrate that a force is required to detach cells is changed according to detachment time variation.

  • Dynamics of molten drop detachment in the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding is investigated using the Volume of Fluid(VOF) method. The electromagnetic effects are included in the formulation of the VOF method which has been widely used to analyze the dynamics of the fluid having a free surface. The molten drop geometry, pressure and velocity profiles within the drop are calculated numerically in the cases of globular and spray transfer modes. It appears that the velocity and current distribution affect metal detachment. It is found that the taper is formed and maintained during the spray transfer by the electromagnetic force. Predicted results show reasonably good agreement with the available experimental data which validates the application of the VOF method to metal transfer analysis.

  • In order to develop the mechanical fruit harvest system the detachment force, type and torque investigated and analyse as several loading modes were applied on the fruit-stem of the persimmon fruit. A proving ring with strain gauges was used for the experiment. The following conclusions were drawn from the results : The mode of withdrawl of the stem from the calyx appeared highly as the persimmon fruit matured. The mode of failure at the junction of the stem and calyx which was desirable mode for mechanical fruit harvest increased as the angular displacement of the fruit with respect to the stem axis increased from zero to ninety degrees. However the mode of failure of the fruiting branch decreased for the same degree of angle pull as above. The range of detachment force of the persimmon fruit was from 13 to 5 kg. The detachment force decreased from 47 to 8 % as the fruit matured. Also, the force decreased from 31 to 24 % for the same maturity levels as the angular displacement of the fruit with respect to the stem axis increased from zero to ninety degrees. The range of detachment force to weight ratio(F/W) of the fruit was from 130 to 54 approximately. The detachment force to weight ratio (F/W) decreased from 36 to 8 % as the fruit matured. Also, the ratio (F/W) decreased from 49 to 33 % for the same maturity levels as the same degree of angle pull as above. In order to remove fruit from tree the desirable force applied to the stem is approximately from 1,280 to 530 kg. Also, the desirable torque to remove the fruits was approximately from 1.1 to $0.5kg{\cdot}cm$.

  • PURPOSE. Although magnetic attachment is used frequently for overdenture, it is reported that attractive force can be decreased by abrasion and corrosion. The purpose of this study was to establish the clinical basis about considerations and long term prognosis of overdenture using magnetic attachments by investigating the change in attractive force of magnetic attachment applied to the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Among the patients treated with overdenture using magnetic attachments in Dankook University Dental Hospital, attractive force records of 61 magnetic attachments of 20 subjects who re-visited from July 2013 to June 2014 were analyzed. Dental magnet tester (Aichi Micro Intelligent Co., Aichi, Japan) was used for measurement. The magnetic attachments used in this study were Magfit IP-B Flat, Magfit DX400, Magfit DX600 and Magfit DX800 (Aichi Steel Co., Aichi, Japan) filled with Neodymium (NdFeB), a rare-earth magnet. RESULTS. Reduction ratio of attractive force had no significant correlation with conditional variables to which attachments were applied, and was higher when the maintenance period was longer (P<.05, r=.361). Reduction ratio of attractive force was significantly higher in the subject group in which attachments were used over 9 years than within 9 years (P<.05). Furthermore, 16.39% of total magnetic attachments showed detachment of keeper or assembly. CONCLUSION. Attractive force of magnetic attachment is maintained regardless of conditional variables and reduction ratio increased as the maintenance period became longer. Further study on adhesive material, attachment method and design improvement to prevent detachment of magnetic attachment is needed.
