One of the most common defects in reinforced concrete bridge decks is corrosion of steel reinforcing bars. This invisible defect reduces the deck stiffness and affects the bridge's serviceability. Regular monitoring of the bridge is required to detect and control this type of damage and in turn, minimize repair costs. Because the corrosion is hidden within the deck, this type of damage cannot be easily detected by visual inspection and therefore, an alternative damage detection technique is required. This research develops a non-destructive method for detecting reinforcing bar corrosion. Experimental modal analysis, as a non-destructive testing technique, and finite element (FE) model updating are used in this method. The location and size of corrosion in the reinforcing bars is predicted by creating a finite element model of bridge deck and updating the model characteristics to match the experimental results. The practicality and applicability of the proposed method were evaluated by applying the new technique to a two spans bridge for monitoring steel bar corrosion. It was shown that the proposed method can predict the location and size of reinforcing bars corrosion with reasonable accuracy.
In an industrial field, non-destructive testing (NDT) is commonly used to inspect industrial products. Among NDT methods using radiation sources, X-ray laminography has several advantages, such as high depth resolution and low computational costs. Moreover, an X-ray laminography system with stationary source array and compact detector is able to reduce mechanical motion artifacts and improve inspection efficiency. However, this system, called stationary inverse-geometry X-ray laminography (s-IGXL), causes truncation artifacts in reconstructed images due to limited fields-of-view (FOVs). In this study, we proposed a projection data correction (PDC) method to reduce the truncation artifacts arisen in s-IGXL images, and the performance of the proposed method was evaluated with the different number of focal spots in terms of quantitative accuracy. Comparing with conventional techniques, the PDC method showed superior performance in reducing truncation artifacts and improved the quantitative accuracy of s-IGXL images for all the number of focal spots. In conclusion, the PDC method can improve the accuracy of s-IGXL images and allow precise NDT measurements.

This study is concerned with reliability technology. In order to achieve the quality level of items for consumer's satisfaction, tests for the item's reliability are essential. This article deals with a method and real field application to plan reliability testing. Especially the environmental conditions and methods such as screening test for electronic components will be shown. As well, we will explore methods and field applications with respect to mechanic destructive tests and non destructive tests.

Reconstruction of the radial two-dimensional of fission products using projections obtained by nondestructive transversal direction gamma scanning was evaluated, and then compared with the destructive sectional gamma scanning results. Although the nondestructive method has a little drawback compared to the destructive method in the accuracy, the former seemed to be sufficiently applicable.
The aim of the paper is to introduce the statistical definition of the specified compressive strength of the concrete to be used for safety evaluation of the existing structure in domestic practice and to present the practical method to obtain the specified strength by utilizing the non-destructive test data as well as the limited number of core test data. The statistical definition of the specified compressive strength of concrete in the design codes is reviewed and the consistent formulations to statistically estimate the specified strength for assessment are described. In order to prevent estimating an unrealistically small value of the specified strength due to limited number of data, it is proposed that the information from the non-destructive test data is combined to that of the minimum core test data. The the sample mean, standard deviation and total number of concrete test are obtained from combined test data. The proposed procedures are applied to an example test data composed of the artificial numerical values and the actual evaluation data collected from the bridge assessment reports. The calculation results show that the proposed statistical estimation procedures yield reasonable values of the specified strength for assessment by applying the non-destructive test data in addition to the limited number of core test data.

PURPOSES : This study is to evaluate moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures by using non-destructive impact wave and to determine durability so as to decrease the gap between before and after freezing in the future. METHODS : Using non-destructive impact wave, this study is to determine the dynamic modulus of asphalt specimen. Furthermore, the results obtained from two experiment accelerometers are used for the dynamic modulus determination. The dynamic moduli of specimens are compared with those of the freezing-thawing specimens. RESULTS : Test results showed that the dynamic modulus before freezing and thawing environment loads at each temperature dropped about 3.7% after the environmental loads. Furthermore, correlation analysis indicates that transition of dynamic modulus at each point is about 89.59%. CONCLUSIONS: Evaluation of asphalt mixtures using non-destructive impact wave has excellent repeatability and simple equipment for the test. Consequently, the method in the study will be useful for evaluating the characteristics of a various asphalt mixtures.

In recent years, discoloration defects, called as snail trail, have been observed at many crystalline photovoltaic modules after a period of time ranging from several months to several years after initial installation. It has been reported that this phenomenon doesn't impact on the performance of photovoltaic modules, but it can be detected through simple visual inspection. The origin and detailed mechanism for the formation have not been identified. In this study, non-destructive analysis by Raman spectroscopy has been carried out to investigate the origin of this phenomenon. In parallel, destructive analysis by scanning electron microscopt and transmission electron microscopy was also performed in order to confirm the results from non-destructive method. Through the extensive analysis, it was found that the main cause for discoloration is the formations of $Ag_2CO_3$ and $AgC_2H_3O_2$. Detailed mechanism for the formation of these particles was indentified through systematic studies.
The ultrasonic non-destructive method was used for wood decay test. The temperature change and moisture contents of wood were estimated how the ultrasonic wave velocity changes. The relationship between weight loss of wood decayed by T. palustris and ultrasonic wave velocity was investigated. The non-destructive methods of different condition of logwood were estimated. Decay map of old wood was made by non destructive methods. Through these tests, we can accumulate the data to judge the degree of wood decay. The decay map of wood could be used for the analysis of old wood.

This study was to measure the properties of logs and classify them by non-destructive methods. The purpose of this experiment was focused at mensurability of logs by non-destructive methods. The non-destructive instrument, Stress-Wave Timer 239A which was made by Metriguard in U.S.A., was used. The stress wave velocities of log's cross direction were measured and compared with three different methods; 1. with hammer, 2. with hammer and D.B.H. meter, 3. with manufactured instrument. Number of used logs were seven logs, which were classified by naked eye into six groups; very severe rot, severe rot, mild rot & knot, mild rot & check, mild rot, sound log, and in diameter were into three groups; large(57.4cm), medium(36~41.2cm), small(28.9cm) log. The results, which were classified by mensurability with non-destructive methods, were followed; 1. The stress wave velocities were very different between rot and sound log. So it meant the possibility of mensurability of logs by non-destructive method even if high standard error. 2. The stress wave velocities decreased with checks more than with rots, which meant the checks affected speeds more. 3. The stress wave velocities increased with knot. 4. The velocities with manufactured instrument showed lower standard error, so more accurate results than other methods. Especially the required labour decreased from 3~4 to 2 persons. 5. Finally, the mensurability showed more accurate results and made the classification of logs scientific.

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) was developed, it is successfully commercialized in the field of transportation vehicles. In this study, we analyzed the defects of A2024-T4 alloy using non-destructive test of radiograph, ultrasonic, electrical conductivity and destructive test of microstructure observation, tensile strength. As the results of experiment, mapping of defects was obtained. Fine defects which were not detected in radiograph test were detected in ultrasonic test, and it enabled efficient detection of defects by difference of sound pressure and color. The values of electrical conductivity was decreased as amount of defects was increasing. Joint efficient of defect-free weldment that found by non-destructive and destructive test was 91%. Therefore it was considered that non-destructive test of friction stir welded A2024-T4 Alloy was an efficient method.
