  • For over 100 years, the tall building has largely advanced in technological innovation; however very little has been done in the terms of understanding the changing needs of the occupant needs and experience. The vast changes occurring due to technology and mobility demand reconsidering the tall building today and for the future. This paper will briefly survey the past eras of tall building design and will propose considerations and solutions for the future.

An Ergonomic Shape Design for Automotive Push-Return Switches

  • Objective: The objective of this study is to understand the effect of angle and curvature of push-return switches, which are external factors in the operation environment inside the cars, on the feel of operation and to propose optimum alternatives. Background: Customers' needs for products are changing from functional and performance aspects to customer-led type where customers can reflect on their needs on the products. The operation inside cars is executed by HMI. The push-return switch is utilized as the most intuitive mode of HMI; therefore, this push-return switch, which is widely used, has to be developed by assessing the preference and satisfaction of the customer. Method: The angle and curvatures, which are external factors that affect the feel of operation, are drawn through surveying the preceding research literatures. The stages to construct alternatives in experiments are as follows: (1) the tactile switch is replaced after dismantling the switch assembly to evaluate the internal characteristics proposed by preceding researches, (2) a drawing is prepared by using a design software, is printed using 3D printer, and then it is attached on the switch assembly, and (3) evaluation for satisfaction of operation is carried out by using a driving simulator. Results: Both the angle and curvature that are external factors of switch significantly affect the feel of operation. However, interaction between the two factors is found insignificant. Therefore, an optimum alternative is proposed considering the experimental outcomes. Conclusion: This study evaluates the satisfaction in operation that affects the feel of operation environment inside the cars. Based on the study results, a guideline for switch design in the center fascia is proposed. Application: This study is expected to be used as basic data for designing automotive switches, as well as switches in the industries similar with the operation environments of cars.

Development of Microfluidic Radioimmunoassay Platform for High-throughput Analysis with Reduced Radioactive Waste

  • Microfluidic radioimmunoassay (RIA) platform called µ-RIA spends less reagent and shorter reaction time for the analysis compared to the conventional tube-based radioimmunoassay. This study reported the design of µ-RIA chips optimized for the gamma counter which could measure the small samples of radioactive materials automatically. Compared with the previous study, the µ-RIA chips developed in this study were designed to be compatible with conventional RIA test tubes. And, the automatic gamma counter could detect radioactivity from the 125I labeled anti-PSA attached to the chips. Effects of the multi-layer microchannels and two-phase flow in the µ-RIA chips were investigated in this study. The measured radioactivity from the 125I labeled anti-PSA was linearly proportional to the number of stacked chips, representing that the radioactivity in µ-RIA platform could be amplified by designing the chips with multi-layers. In addition, we designed µ-RIA chip to generate liquid-gas plug flow inside the microfluidic channel. The plug flow can promote binding of the biomolecules onto the microfluidic channel surface with recirculation in the liquid phase. The ratio of liquid slug and air slug length was 1 : 1 when the 125I labeled anti-PSA and the air were injected at 1 and 35 µL/min, respectively, exhibiting 1.6 times higher biomolecule attachment compared to the microfluidic chip without the air injection. This experimental result indicated that the biomolecular reaction was improved by generating liquid-gas slugs inside the microfluidic channel. In this study, we presented a novel µ-RIA chips that is compatible with the conventional gamma counter with automated sampler. Therefore, high-throughput radioimmunoassay can be carried out by the automatic measurement of radioactivity with reduced radiowaste generation. We expect the µ-RIA platform can successfully replace conventional tube-based radioimmunoassay in the future.

회전익항공기용 연료셀 피탄 수치모사 연구 (Numerical Simulation of Bullet Impact for Fuel Cell of Rotorcraft)

  • 회전익항공기의 연료셀 내부는 연료보관 및 연료를 엔진으로 공급하기 위한 배관과 구성품들이 배치되어 있다. 특히, 기동헬기는 전장에서 사용되는 헬기로써, 수 km 고도에서 비행하는 고정익기보다 비행고도가 낮기 때문에 피탄될 가능성이 높다. 따라서, 항공기의 생존성을 극대화하기 위해서는 피탄시 유체내부 상승압력에 의한 내부 구성품들이 받는 영향성을 검토하여 설계되어야 함은 주지의 사실이다. 그러나 내탄시험은 연료셀 자체의 제작비용 및 준비기간이 상당히 소요되고, 실탄 사용에 따른 시험수행의 제약 때문에 수치모사를 통한 관련 데이터의 확보가 필요하다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 유체-구조 수치모사 프로그램인 Autodyn을 이용하여 회전익항공기 연료셀의 내탄 수치모사를 수행하여, 피탄 후 연료셀 내부에서의 탄 거동을 분석하고 유체내부의 압력과 연료 셀 자체의 등가응력을 평가하였다.

차량 정보 시스템의 설계를 위한 인간공학적 연구 및 가이드라인 고찰 (A Review of Ergonomic Researches for Designing In-Vehicle Information Systems)

  • Objective: This study is to provide a foundation for developing comprehensive ergonomic design guidelines for in-vehicle information systems (IVIS) by giving an overview of existing researches as well as setting further research directions. Background: The drivers get much more information recently while interacting with new safety functions of the cars. To avoid cognitive overload of the drivers, IVIS should be deigned appropriately by considering various human factors and task conditions. Method: We gathered, analyzed, and summarized ergonomic researches concerned with IVIS design conducted inside and outside Korea according to a categorization system proposed in the study. Frequency analysis was conducted for figuring out what kind of issues took major part of the researches, and their trends across time and regions. Results: Compared to domestic researches, those done in overseas tend to deal with more variety of independent, dependent and extraneous variables. The overseas researches also showed a tendency to get ahead in making ergonomic guidelines for IVIS design by adapting and integrating the results from previous researches. Conclusion and Application: There have been many researches regarding with ergonomic IVIS design, but some of their results became old-fashioned as the technology evolved. Not many researches have considered diverse human factors regarding the drivers' characteristics except age and gender. It is expected that researchers and designers take advantage of this study to find and review relevant results and set out issues of their own for more progressive researches of the field.

Evolutionary Optimization of Pulp Digester Process Using D-optimal DOE and RSM

  • Optimization of existing processes becomes more important than the past as environmental problems and concerns about energy savings stand out. When we can model a process mathematically, we can easily optimize it by using the model as constraints. However, modeling is very difficult for most chemical processes as they include numerous units together with their correlation and we can hardly obtain parameters. Therefore, optimization that is based on the process models is, in turn, hard to perform. Especially, f3r unknown processes, such as bioprocess or microelectronics materials process, optimization using mathematical model (first principle model) is nearly impossible, as we cannot understand the inside mechanism. Consequently, we propose a few optimization method using empirical model evolutionarily instead of mathematical model. In this method, firstly, designing experiments is executed fur removing unecessary experiments. D-optimal DOE is the most developed one among DOEs. It calculates design points so as to minimize the parameters variances of empirical model. Experiments must be performed in order to see the causation between input variables and output variables as only correlation structure can be detected in historical data. And then, using data generated by experiments, empirical model, i.e. response surface is built by PLS or MLR. Now, as process model is constructed, it is used as objective function for optimization. As the optimum point is a local one. above procedures are repeated while moving to a new experiment region fur finding the global optimum point. As a result of application to the pulp digester benchmark model, kappa number that is an indication fur impurity contents decreased to very low value, 3.0394 from 29.7091. From the result, we can see that the proposed methodology has sufficient good performance fur optimization, and is also applicable to real processes.

한국 골프장의 친환경적 개발에 관한 연구 (Study of Pro-environmental Development for Golf Course in Korea)

  • Nowadays, there are increasing demands of golf courses and it is necessary to make more golf courses than the present. To do this, we need to improve the environmental problems with the regional inhabitants, and it is said that the first thing to be considered in developing any golf course in Korea is to preserve the environment. In this context, the purpose of this study is to set forth several design factors to lessen the negative impacts which are accompanied with the development of golf courses. 1. The present conditions of golf courses in Korea Many new golf courses have come into being, particularly since the late 1980s, and now, in the year of 1997, over one hundred of golf courses are doing their business, yet the number of golf course is still less than required. So far, over a half of them have been made in the vicinity of Seoul on account of various reasons, and this has adversely affected on our natural environment. This unreasonable development of golf courses has caused serious water pollution, landslides and the other problems. Also, the topography of Korea is not good for golf courses. Although the demands of golf courses are increasing, the suitable sites for them are very limited, and therefore it is sometimes unavoidable to make golf courses on steep hills. 아트리움 공간의 효과적인 방화설비 기준연구 (A study on the standard of effective fire facilities for the Atrium)

  • 이 연구는 아트리움의 방화안전성 고찰 및 적정한 방화 장치의 기준제시를 초점으로 하고 있다. 주요 내용으로는 아트리움 공간의 일반적 고찰, 아트리움 건물의 실례와 방재상의 문제점을 알아보았고, 현재 우리나라 아트리움 공간에 설치되어 있는 방화설비 등을 조사하여 외국의 여러 기준과 비교함으로써 드러난 문제점 및 취약요인을 바탕으로 아트리움 설계 시 특히 유의하여야 할 사항에 대하여 탐구하였다. 여기서 주장한 아트리움 공간의 효과적인 소화설비기준은 다음과 같다. 1 제연 설비는 비상동력이 부설된 기계제연에 의한 강제배연이 알맞다. 2 아트리움 공간과 연결된 다른 부분에서 공기의 유입이 되지 않도록 연결된 부분(1층 제외)을 화재 시 지동으로 구획되는 가동벽 셔터 방화문을 설치한다. 3. 분리형 적외선 감지기를 아트리움 바닥으로부터 7~8m 높이에 설치하여 조기에 화재를 감지하도록 한다. 4. 천장이 20m이하인 아트리움의 경우 아트리움 천장에 개방형 스프링클러헤드를 설치하고 일제개방밸브를 작동시켜 해당구역에 소화수를 집중 방출하게 하며, 천장이 20m이상인 아트리움의 경우 측벽형 헤드를 저층부의 벽체에 설치하여 수평분출로 소화한다. 5. 피난 계단으로의 이동은 아트리움 공간을 지나지 않고 할 수 있도록 설계되어야한다. 6. 일부부재의 내력저하가 생겨도 전체의 붕괴에는 이르지 않게, 아트리움의 철골의 트러스재는 내화재로 보호한다.
