A Novel Region Decision Method with Mesh Adaptive Direct Search Applied to Optimal FEA-Based Design of Interior PM Generator

  • Optimizing the design of large-scale electric machines based on nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) requires longer computation time than other applications of FEA, mainly due to the huge size of the machines. This paper addresses a new region decision method (RDM) with mesh adaptive direct search (MADS) for the optimal design of wind generators in order to reduce the computation time. The validity of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using Rastrigin and Goldstein-Price benchmark function. Moreover, the algorithm is employed for the optimal design of a 5.6MW interior permanent magnet synchronous generator to minimize the torque ripple. Additionally, mechanical stress analysis as well as electromagnetic field analysis have been implemented to prevent breakdown caused by large centrifugal forces of the modified design.

  • It is critical to select an appropriate technology valuation method when the characteristics of a technology and valuation environment are variable. To ensure high quality decision making when selecting a technology valuation method, it is necessary to understand the principles of a good technology valuation method, and define and apply a decision making theory for selecting an optimal method. The authors propose that Axiomatic Design Principles can be applied as a decision making theory. In order to apply Axiomatic Design for this problem, this paper describes four domains(customer, functional, physical, and process domain) and four axioms(independence, information, cost, time axiom) for the decision making process for the optimal technology valuation method. The result of this study will contribute flexibility to the dynamic technology valuation process.

  • 최근 변화되고 있는 건축설계 기술들 가운데 설계자들의 경험에 의존하고 있는 설계요소들의 설계 값 결정과정들을 논리적으로 접근할 수 있는 방안을 개발하려는 연구들이 있다. 이러한 연구들 중의 한 부분인 본 연구는 건물에너지 절약설계와 관련된 설계요소들 중에서 시간적 변화에 따라 설계 값들이 변화하는 특성을 가진 설계요소들을 대상으로 논리적으로 설계 값을 결정할 수 있는 모델 개발을 목적으로 진행하였다. 그 결과, 현실세계를 확률분포로 해석하여 문제를 해결하는 시뮬레이션 기법을 토대로 논리적으로 설계 값을 결정할 수 있는 결정 모델의 구조를 본 연구를 통해서 설정하였다. 이러한 결정 모델의 적용 가능성과 검정을 위해서 시간변수를 가진 설계요소들의 대표라 할 수 있는 실외 기후요소들을 대상으로 사례분석을 실시하였다.

Conceptual Clothing Design Process Using Cooperative Learning Strategies: Senior Clothing Design Class

  • This paper identified the source of inspiration to cooperatively design a fashion collection from US undergraduate clothing design students and addressed how to implement team-based learning strategy to conceptual clothing design in class. Data was collected from the total of 51 students in a senior clothing design course at a large 4-year university in the US. The assigned project for this class was to develop a group collection under a same theme. Each student worked with his/her team member(s) to create an outfit and the entire class worked as a group to create a cohesive collection. The study showed that the sources of inspiration for the themes/concepts came from 11categories: historic era/old Hollywood glamour, shape/line/structure/architectural, fairy tales movies, nature/abstract, circus/mysterious, occasion/place, object, designer/artist, futuristic, culture, and various movies. To implement cooperative learning strategies in the clothing design class, a total of five class presentation/discussion sessions were held for theme/concept decision, fabric decision, design decision, test garment evaluation and design modification, and final products. Throughout the design process, team-based learning strategy promoted students' engagement and participation and inspired their critical thinking skills for making decisions within a team.

의사결정이론을 이용한 박판성형공정의 최적화 (Optimization of Sheet Metal Forming Process by using Decision-Making Theory)

  • Wrinkle and fracture are two major defects frequently found in the sheet metal forming process. In this process there are more than one design attributes to optimize and several uncontrollable factors which cannot be ignored in determining the optimal values of design variables. Therefore, attempts to reduce defects through a traditional optimization technique are often led to failures. In this research, a new design method for reducing the wrinkle and fracture under uncontrollable factors is presented by using decision-making theory. To avoid the psychological difficulties in determining the scaling constants of the multi-attribute utility function by using the ordinary lottery questions, a pair-wise comparison procedure is adapted to avoid this problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated through a robust design of sheet metal forming process of a side member of an automotive body.

  • Design of Arrhythmia Automatic Diagnostic System Using Decision Table We have developed an arrhythmia automatic diagnostic system using decision table which is based on the criteria of Minnesota code. This system is divided into two Parts. One is wave detection algorithm using significant point extraction method, the other is arrhythmia diag- nostic algorthm. The proposed system allows physicians to diagnose more accurately by pro- viding the objective information about a lot of computer -processed ECG data.

  • This paper considers the applications of cellular automata in order to design self-organizing artificial neural decision systems such as self-organizing neurocomputer circuit, machines, and artifical life VLSI circuits for controlling mechanical systems. We consider the L-system and show the results of growth of plants in artificial life.

  • This paper introduces a simulation design decision support system to support the development process of the pipeline network and provide decision support to the operations of the gas pipelines. The system has been implemented on Flash5, which has a multimedia capabilities environment for designing and delivering low- bandwidth animations, presentations, and web sites. It also offers scripting capabilities and server-side connectivity fur creating applications and web interfaces. Hence a user can interact with the system on the World Wide Web.

  • In this paper, a versatile multi-criteria optimization concept for fatigue life prediction is introduced. Multi-criteria decision making in engineering design refers to obtaining a preferred optimal solution in the context of conflicting design objectives. Compromise decision support problems are used to model engineering decisions involving multiple trade-offs. These methods typically rely on a summation of weighted attributes to accomplish trade-offs among competing objectives. This paper gives an interpretation of the decision parameters as governing both the relative importance of the attributes and the degree of compensation between them. The approach utilizes a response surface model, the compromise decision support problem, which is a multi-objective formulation based on goal programming. Examples illustrate the concepts and demonstrate their applicability.
