A Comparative Analysis of Grounded Design Theories of European and Japanese Fashion Designers

  • The purpose of this paper was to identify and compare the underlying design theory of contemporary European and Japanese fashion designers by using the qualitative research method of grounded theory developed by Glaser and Strauss (1967) and Glaser (1978). In this research, four fashion sites-Paris, Milan, London and Tokyo-were selected. The researcher stayed in each site for a period of two to three weeks for the purpose of data collection. A total of 60 fashion designers, educators, students and journalists were interviewed. 53 open-ended design questionnaires were returned by fashion designers and students. 19 on-site observations of fashion designers and educators were done. Grounded theories of fashion designers were synthesized from in-depth interviews, participant observations and questionnaire surveys of fashion designers, students and educators. The results of theory-building research suggested that there were significant differences between the grounded design theories of European and Japanese fashion designers due to their various cultural contexts.

  • The TRIZ theory which was invented by Russian scientist Genrich Altshuller provides a systematic methodology for innovative engineering design in place of brainstorming. synectics, analogical thinking, which seeming1y high efficiency are still variations of the trials and errors method. TRIZ theory gives designer the ability to explore design solutions in fields other than his (her) own experience. Among several TRIZ theories, most widely used techniques in engineering field are contradiction theory. Su-Field analysis, physical phenomenon and effect and directed production evolution. which are described in this thesis and its application to conceptual design of high-speed train is performed as a case study of TRIZ theory.

Design of Resonator-Coupled Wireless Power Transfer System by Use of BPF Theory

  • A wireless power transfer system based on magnetically coupled two resonators is analysed using the filter theory. Design equations for each lumped parameter circuit components are derived. As a result, change of coupling coefficient between the resonators and/or change of load resistance are easily responded. Effect of circuit loss to the design theory is also addressed. After designing a power transfer system, a real system is constructed using spiral and loop coils. Dependence of circuit elements on their dimensions is measured in advance and used to cope with the designed element values. Simulated response by use of designed element values and measured result are compared, indicating the validity of the theory.

The Principles of Clothing Design and the Way of Design Approach in Lamanova (라마노바의 의상디자인 이론과 접근 방식)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the principles of clothing design and the way of design approach in Lamanova. She caused a revolution in the art of dress and created the foundation for costume design theory. She Addressed Art in everyday life to self-taught dressmakers. The distinguishing feature of the design is simplicity and functionality. In an article "The Russian Style", Lamanova raised the question of the new Soviet costume and traditional costume. In "On Contemporary Costume" she classified the new forms of clothes into everyday and holiday attire, showed the principles of costume, and analyzed in detail the necessity of constructing a costume to suit the individual figure. In "On the Rationality of Costume", she found a basis theory for clothing design which is for whom, from what, and for what purpose. Lamanova's theory was made public in full in 1928 and was presented at the exhibition of Handmade Textiles and Embroidery in Women's Contemporary Costume. The main contents are the costume's purpose, it's material, the figure of its wearer, and its form. She argued that the new costume could be in line with the new life and her theory could be the creed of clothing designers. The principles of Lamanova's theory can still be applied today, not only in Russian traditional and contemporary costume, but in contemporary world fashion.

  • Ji Cheng''''s great work on garden design theory, the ''''Yuanye'''', written in 1631 and originally published in 1634 is the first surviving treatise and most famous and comprehensive work on the suvject in the Chinese tradition. He constructed Dongdiyuan in Changzhou about 1623, Wuyuan in Yizheng in 1631, and Yingyuan in Yangzhou about 1634. But no poems and paintings written by him still exist, and none of his known gardens has survived. Therefore his design philosophy is able to be interpreted only by his work, Yuanye. This study aims at investigating the garden design theory in Yuanye. The results were summarized as follows. 1) Yuanye reflected the garden tastes of literati, and Ji Cheng endeavored to express the deas of literati painting into gardens. 2) The essence of the garden design theory is Xingzao, and Yindi, following the existing lie of the land, and Jiejing, to borrow from the scenery, are two major activities of Xingzao. 3) Ji Cheng''''s design theory build up on the basis of recognizing the existence of masters. 4) Yindi is the environmental and ecological planning and design method. This is the activity to reach the state of artistry through suitability. 5) Jiejing is not merely borrowing the landscape but the making use of scenery around the garden. And only the master has the skill in fitting in with the form of the land. 6) Ji Cheng pursuits the garden which will look like something naturally created though manmade. It is the goal of the Chinese traditional gardens and ideal situation. 7) Ji Cheng aims to unify the environment and landscape design dialectically into Xingzao.
