  • As the suction pad-supporting bike carrier attached to a car may be subject to an excessive dynamic load due to random vibrations and centrifugal forces during driving, its structural safety is of great concern. To examine this, the finite-element method with a fluid-structure interaction should be used because the pressure on the pad bottom is changed in real time according to the fluctuations of the force or the moment applied on the pad. This method, however, has high computing costs in terms of modeling efforts and software expense. Moreover, the accuracy of computation is not easily guaranteed. Therefore, a new method combining the experiment and computation is proposed in this paper: the bottom pressure and contact area of the pad under varying loads was measured in real time and the acquired data are then used in the nonlinear elastic finite-element calculations. The computational and experimental results obtained with the product under development showed that the safety margin of the pad under the axial loading is relatively sufficient, whereas with an excessive rotational loading, the pad is vulnerable to separation or a local surface damage; hence, the safety margin may not be secured. The predicted contact behavior under the variation of the magnitude and type of the loading were in good agreement with the one from the experiment. The proposed analysis method in this study could be used in the design of similar vacuum pad systems.

  • The oral hygiene of patients admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) is very important. Critically ill patients are basically immunocompromised ones because of the high risk of infection by various pathogenic bacteria. The mouth is not only the primary site of infection, but also the site of systemic infections. The purpose of this study was to design a mouthpiece type vacuum oral cleaner for the oral care of seriously ill patients. A 3D CAD modeling and flow analysis model were established for a double structure type cleaner and standard tooth model, and their pressure and flow characteristics were analyzed. The pressure inside the oral cleaner was almost constant, but the velocity distribution showed a large difference between the inside and outside of the teeth. The velocity at the center region inside of the teeth was the highest, and the speed decreased as the distance from the center increased. In the analysis of the case where the suction tube was replaced by the drainage tube, the velocity at the center of the outer portion of the teeth was the highest. In order to increase the effectiveness of the oral cleaner, alternating between suction and drainage is proposed, and a design complement to increase the speed of the molar region is required.

  • The MVR was theoretically modeled by performing the polytropic process, and the polytropic coefficient was estimated by using the performance curve provided by the manufacturers. The TVR was investigated by applying the conservation equations to the movement of fluids inside the TVR. The size of the nozzle and diffuser was determined. Theoretical MVR and TVR modeling was verified by comparing the results of the model with the available design data. Besides, the effects of multi-staging of the MVR on power consumption, and the effects of suction and primary pressure on the sizing of TVR were investigated.

  • A significant amount of labor hour is being spent for clean up spent abrasives after blasting. So, for improving the efficiency of abrasive(grit) recovery process which acts as the neck of a battle in preceding coating stage, it was established the theoretical background for pneumatic transport technology in the abrasive recovery system as well as experimentally evaluated the effect of design parameters such as flow pattern, saltation velocity and pressure drop on the efficiency of the abrasive recovery system. And, by optimizing the operating parameter such as the length and diameter of suction hose, specification of recovery device, recovery mouth and hose connection method, a method which can dramatical1y increase the efficiency of abrasive recovery system, is derived.

  • The performance of a torque converter can be expressed by the performance parameters such as flow radius and flow angle, on the mean flow path. The geometric analysis of the torque converter is required to determine these parameters for the modeling of the torque converter. In general, the blade shape is depicted by three dimensional data at the mid-surface of blade or those of the pressure and suction side. To generate three dimensional model of the blade using the data mentioned above, a consistent data format and a shape generation algorithm are required. This paper presents a useful consistent data format of the blades and an algorithm for the geometrical shape generation. By the geometric analysis program to which the shape generation algorithm is embedded, the variation of blade angles in rotating element analyzed. Then finally, the analyzed results of geometric profile of a blade are compared with those of the blade design principle, so called forced vortex theorem.

  • Biopiles which offer the potential for cost-effective treatment of contaminated soils are above-ground, engineered systems that use oxygen to stimulate the growth and reproduction of aerobic bacteria for degradation of the petroleum constituents adsorbed to soil in excavated soils. This technology involves heaping contaminated soils into piles and stimulating aerobic microbial activity within the soils through the aeration and/or addition of minerals, nutrients, and moisture. Inside the biopile, microbially mediated reactions by blowing or extracting air through the pipes can enhance degradation of the organic contaminants. The influence of a aeration system on the biopile performance was investigated. Air pressure made to compare the efficiency of suction in the pipes showed that there were slightly significant difference between the two piles in the total amount of TPH biodegradation. The normalised degradation rate was, however, considerably higher in the aeration system than in the normal system without aeration, suggesting that the vertical venting method may have improved the efficiency of the biological reactions in the pile.

  • Recently, from the viewpoint of global wanning, natural gas CO2 is considered as a main refrigerant for hot water system. The characteristics of CO2 is not toxic, not flammable, high pressure, and high refrigerating capacity. Also it is widely available as a byproduct of industrial processes. This paper describes the performance analysis program of the swash plate type compressor using CO2 refrigerant. Estimates of the refrigerant flow rate, compression work, discharge temperature and volumetric, compressor efficiencies of the CO2 swash plate type compressor are obtained from the various design parameter such as the inclination angle of the swash plate, discharge hole area and suction hole area.

  • The shape of an impeller splitter for a dual-inlet centrifugal blower was optimized to enhance the blower performance. Two design variable, the normalized chord and pitch of a splitter, were used to evaluate the blower performance and internal flow fields based on the three-dimensional flow analysis. The blower performance obtained using this numerical simulation had a maximum error of 4 percent compared to that in an experiment at the design flow condition. The shape optimization of the splitter successfully increased the blower efficiency and pressure by 3.65 and 1.14 percent compared to the reference values. The blower performance was increased by reducing the flow separation near the blade suction surface by optimizing the shape of the splitter, which produced a pressure increase at the outlet of the volute casing.

  • In order to improve the propeller Cavitation Inception Speed (CIS) performance, it needs to modify the propeller geometry and the wake distribution that flows into the propeller. In the previous study, the twisted angles of the V-strut were modified to improve propeller CIS, cavitation behavior and pressure fluctuation performances. Then the propeller behind the modified V-strut (New strut) showed better cavitation characteristics than that behind the existing V-strut (Old strut). However, the CIS of Suction Side Tip Vortex (SSTV) and Pressure Side Tp Vortex (PSTV) showed a big difference at behind each V-strut. In this study, the balance design is conducted to minimize the difference between SSTV CIS and PSTV CIS at behind each V-strut. To improve the propeller CIS performance, 1 propeller is designed at behind the old strut and 3 propellers are designed at behind the new strut. The propeller CIS is increased through the balance design and the stern appendage modification. The final propeller CIS is increased about 5.3 knots higher than that of the existing propeller at behind the old strut. On the basis of the present study, it is thought that the better improvement method for the propeller CIS would be suggested.
